I have that same Mitsubishi starter on my 99. Still works great. The slow crank could be from the worn cables and battery? Jeep cables upgrade made it crank much smoother. My starter has about 220k in it. ☺️
I'm so glad jeep didn't use those old Chrysler starters used on slant 6s , they sounded like they had rocks inside lol. Great job and tip on preventing a no start when the old finally gave out!
Had a broken door check on Bumble Jeep when I got her 1/18. Hinges were toast as well. Got a used door check from a local salvage yard, welded the hinges and good for now. But the used door check pops and cracks no matter how much WD-40 or white lithium grease I spray on it. The price on new door checks are crazy, even from Rock Auto. ($37+), so waiting for the snow to melt to grab a passenger side check from another yard that has plenty of Cherokees. Maybe I'll grab some spares to share. God bless, stay well.
I hate that mine make the creaking noise. Not sure what it’s called to find a replacement for what look like two bearings. I white lithium grease the heck out of them now and then but being a 98 I’m sure they been through the wringer.
We have snow in greater Seattle area, due to sudden cold storm. It’s very rare for us to get snow, and it’s hit over 8 inches. But my 93 xj stick shift with NP 231 is handling it like a boss. :). She just got nilight fog lights and new alarm for Valentine’s Day. It’s interesting to see how the newer Cherokee connections are for starter. And I totally agree that Optima has gone to crap. Happy Valentine’s Day to you and wife, as well as Black Beauty. :)
dan is a trooper...making videos in the cold of winter...youtuber of the year!...oh and i bought my 2000 subaru RS new and the battery went in 2012...talk about longevity...on my third battery since the original was replaced
I always use a 34/78 battery in my Cherokees, because they top post and side post. I use the side post for accessories, and trickle charger plug. Just saying.
Also, do a voltage drop test on the battery cables to see if corrosion had built up inside and underneath the cable insulation. You can also cut the insulation open in a couple of places and see if the wire has turned green with corrosion. In my younger days, I have replaced the battery and starter to find out I still had the same problem with bad cables.
Another good test to do is a Parasitic draw test (Current Draw) to see if the battery is being pulled down slowly by current draw when you are away from the vehicle.
This video is awesome and so helpful!!!I bought my first 2000 xj a couple of months ago. But im stumped. I had dismounted my starter in order to take my oil pan out. I placed the starter on top of the oil filter so as to not pull the wires. But when i bolted the starter back on and went to connect my battery it started to spark real bad and it tried to turn over. When i unplugged the cable from the starter and reconnected the battery it didnt spark. I took it to autozone to test and they said the starter was fine. None of my connections are frayed or touching or even corroded. I have no idea what to do. Any suggestions. Thank you!
Pull the starter relay until it's installed.. once it's installed and put the starter relay back in and see what happens. It immediately starts when you put the relay back in it could be something up with the ignition
@@ProjectDanHThanks so much. Did as advised and it still cranked. Took me like two days of testing the starter and almost buying a new starter to realize that it was simply the freaking Bolts! The previous owner put two long bolt instead of the long one on the bottom and shorter on top. So when i would tightened the old bolts on it would short the starter on the inside. Got the correct bolts and now no issues.
My 5.9L Baby Grand needs love but weather is keeping her down. Heater core, lower radiator hose and the usual find something here and there. Sad state that the replacement optima isn’t subject to replacement. They must know they suck lol
Yo Dan!! I just got a sick red 99 Cherokee and I’m curious as to where you got the angry eyes for the heel. I just seen one of your videos from 2019 and I feel like you’re the guy to ask!
Nice job Dano. Now you got me wondering about the starter in my 2001 XJ.It is the OG starter with 85K on it.Seems to be holding up so far.🤞Nice job buddy.👍👍We are having some frigid temps here in southern Illinois right now..
Thanks for the vid. Our XJ is sounding sluggish at startup like Black Beauty was. We are taking to my mechanic to correct an oil leak, and I may be having him replace the starter like you just did. The batter is fairly new, but we will check it to be sure it's good. It's got 156K miles, but I wonder if the starter is original?
My 1999 XJ classic has been sitting all winter. I did my starter last summer and all was well. Now it won’t start unless I put a screwdriver on the starter terminals. I already replaced the NSS but that didn’t change anything. Any idea what the problem could be?
My 98 ZJ limited starter went at 298k and it was 22 years old but would work if you tapped it with a hammer 😂 Great video Dan H. and Walmart batteries are the best for your budget .
hey I've got a question. When the engine is cold, and I wanna do a cold start, do I have to wait until all light go out, or can I do it like u did, u just put the key, and start the black beast, does it makes any difference? I have a 4.7 WJ :)

It shouldn’t really make a difference for gasoline engines. You mostly see that on diesel engines to warm up the glow plugs for a cold start.
@@jbomman yeah, Ive always had diesel engines cars, and I learned that I should wait until all light goes out, but I am learning new stuff each day, thx
The warning lights are just a quick self check.. for a gas vehicle just crank away. like jbomman said.. diesel needs time for the glow plugs to warm.
@@ProjectDanH thank God im over with diesel :)
I try the first start then wait a moment for the friction to warm the oil before trying again. Least that’s the idea in my head that it helps lol
