Great comment however not an excuse but consider this. Many of us were driven to education as security and had zero inkling about investment and entrepreneurship. Not to mention our concept of what farming entails. Hopefully the next generation will not be as naive as us
Not only that but many grew up in poverty and didn’t come from families that already had investments in the country so nation building was not apart of their experience. It’s great to see their accomplishments non the less

I think part of the reason people aren't recognizing the growth in Jamaica is because a lot of foundation work is being put in. New roads, new legislation etc., it's like the country is finally being built from the ground up, bringing some order to the chaos that used to be part of daily life. People from developed countries are used to seeing perfect infrastructure (sidewalks, modern buildings) everywhere and not used to seeing shacks on the roadside, stray animals etc. They are very visual and don't recognize what's going under the surface. Some are seeing it though, the price of real estate is reflecting the demand that is out there from people who want to invest in Jamaica. We just need a few years before the changes become more obvious.

This is what I love to see....I stand firm in investing in your home country. We Jamaican's are bright & creative amongst other things but there is SOOOOO MUCH room for development especially within restaurants/food sector. In my opinion, we should be the Dubai of the Caribbean but there are so many things which let us down. Despite the negatives affecting the entire country, I believe and pray, a change is in the works but it will take some time. On another note, I was so DISAPPOINTED visiting Mathew's last November but the concept is great.

I loved this interview and all points made by guest. Unfortunately, this interview made me reflect on disparities between those who have resources to start and expand family businesses versus those who have nothing in Jamaica. That said, I firmly believe folks must take individual responsibility for their destiny. I'm one of those folks returning to Jamaica after 39 years. Jamaica is definitely pushing in the right direction
I want to start a business in Jamaica but feeling so intimidated since I wasn't born there and wasn't raised with much of my culture around except during holidays. Most of my family has moved off the island and estranged from one another and I've only visited as an adult for resort vacations. Knowing the five generations of my ancestry was in Jamaica makes me want to find a way to claim citizenship and build my business. I'm interested in the health industry, but I also have experience in spa/wellness and fitness. Will be doing more research but hopefully there is opportunity to grow in these fields with my startup. I can see Negril being a Caribbean version of Vancouver!
Also....restaurants, there's definitely room for healthy food choices in Negril. Every time I return to NYC I'm dying for salads, lol., a farm that produces greens or micro greens would be fantastic. I also like the idea of a wine bar that serves small plates that are easy to assemble, using local products like local cheeses and cured meats, and local sauces etc. I would do a lottery so locals who don't have the means can win a glass of wine and an appetizer and enjoy the experience or join a cause that helps local communities. But yeah, have to give back and create positive experiences and opportunities for the locals too.

I think for any emerging country to succeed it needs a strong middle class. I hope the job opportunities for Jamaicans can expand beyond hospitality and tourism. Also hoping more businesses that invest in Jamaica put money into developing their employees with hard skills and professional qualifications. That's what the top companies in the world do! Great episode.
There are other job opportunities, however a lot of us as myself didn't take our schooling seriously and took advantage of that- the tourism industry. I didn't want to do that so i migrated, but always looked back home. There are a lot of different opportunities just not qualified individuals.

Overseas is good only if you make up your mind to employed to someone but in Jamaican you can put your own skills in making your own business and employment of other by helping out fellow citizens its better than stay employed until you retire and you might retired with a empty account and you might retired on a little penchan or died before that age and poisen with medication

I grew up in the grill Negril I've always wanted to move back home and make it a better place for the locals, I'm happy to see someone at least got a chance to make that come true for my people. Someday i'll going back and do my part too.
People make choices and thats just that, some choose to leave the island for better opportunity and some stay on the island for better opportunity both are right none is better than none.

This is so exciting to me. I plan on investing in Jamaica because my parents retired there (and they married at the Travellers), they live way up in Davyton in Manchester Parish but Negril has always been a must-stop for 17 out of my 18 trips to Jamaica and I am blown away by the level of development since Covid. I was thinking of saving for development around Aligator Pond because it's closer to them, but you have me thinking of Negril again. Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of money and I'm wondering how I can pitch in and invest in smaller ways to start. Perhaps you can do an episode on that, bite-sized investment ideas. BTW, I love the idea of a recreational Center as I'm into health and wellness and I am moving into that as a career. I plan on eventually coming down and working as a Pilates Instructor so I can come more than once a year. I also love the idea of a retirement complex, as I'm always worried about how to be there for my family as they get older while developing and thriving for myself.... They're currently in their mid 70's. I love your channel, thank you for bringing all this amazing information on growth in Jamaica!

The obvious elephant in the room (given the timing of this interview) is also the rising corruption and the risks that are involved in A: Returning and B: Investing one's talent and/or resources in Jamaica. (Two key elements considered by most return residents whether for business or leisure). Additionally, while I love #BrandJamaica 🇯🇲 it is severely lacking in a plan for diversity, equity and inclusivity. Let's face it: "Success" in Jamaica outside of the music and entertainment sectors, has a "look." It is a brand in itself. @pootus9 Thank you! The discourse on these videos is always a happy-clappy, no problem, man attitude. As if the violent crime and people being killed or robbed is "somewhere out there in the ether". There is a very good reason for the brain drain, and for the vast diaspora of Jamaicans overseas. I miss the beauty of home very much, but I like being able to walk around in public in Canada with my jewelry. I like being able to park my car in my driveway and know that it will be out there the next morning. I like being able to build my house where I want, without having to be "vigilant" about the envious surveillance of my neighbours. I like being able to walk into a bank and do my business in an efficient 20 mins., instead of a "laidback" 2 hours. And we won't talk about that weird exchange rate. When we left Jamaica in 1970, the exchange rate was J$.70c = US$1.00.

Quite a tricky topic. The investments brings in jobs, which I’m all for. The issue arises when those investment gains aren’t passed/reflected locally and this worries me as it’s bound to cause a rift which could cause protests/riots from the local Jamaicans. Lawd thank you soooo much for this. I love your honesty and the key topics you have spoken on.. Health and way of life primarily .. It's so ironic Jamaica is " so bad" yet it has created all these persons who are excelling abroad who got that foundation. I believe that the perception is there isn't money to be made while the shift I believe that needs to happen is for persons to take the exposure and put it back into our home and create opportunities for our own. To add to what you're saying I feel our banking system needs to reduce the barrier to entry as well for business specifically. I could go on and on and to many sound crazy but my answer to those persons is Disney.

**This is not directed to Matthew or Winthrop...just an opinion** It's so disappointing how Jamaica doesn't really give their own people affordable resources. Some are fortunate to have it, but a lot have to migrate overseas to get it and then when they return with tons of wealth and fame, "affluent" Jamaicans flock to them and the nation gives them so much public recognition. Sadly, some Jamaicans aren't "Proud to be Jamaican" because of that. Dreams seem too far fetched. Maybe I'm just uninformed of how the country operates, but it seems (mostly) the extremely smart, "educated" and/or legacy wealthy, make it much more easily.

I’d say this is more so how we’re seen from the outside. We’re also still categorized as a developing nation. We’re definitely not a wealthy nation but we’re definitely not in the same category as a Haiti from an economic and political stability stand point

Jamaica has a high rate of brain drain because nepotism is rampant. Yes, a lot of Jamaican’s are capable of adding great value to the country but how can they do that if the opportunity to show what they can do is denied? In Jamaica it often who you know and not what you have to offer and that is something that needs to be addressed.
Remember young man, that Jamaica is who or what she is. She is not Japanese, or any other asiatic, though its an admixture, doubt whether tourist are going there to sample "Shushi" stick to who you are, be proud and add small mixture. Japanese not going to Jamaica to eat their dish made better at home with the correct ingredients. There.

The Japanese may not be going to Jamaica to eat sushi but they have no problem performing Reggae in Japan. They barrow from us we can certainly barrow from them. I also did hear them say in this discussion they were solely catering to the Japanese tourist.

Be careful though because the language you guys are speaking sounds a lot like gentrification. Not everyone in and out of Jamaica is seeking the white Western modern mentality and lifestyle. Many of us are tired of eating sushi and going to restaurants all the time or living in a concrete jungle and wanna experience real life in Jamaice going back to nature and experience a more laid back and basic lifestyle. Are you guys when planning all the modernization also thinking of people more interested in natural lifestyles and should there be room for us to live?

There are other job opportunities, however a lot of us as myself didn't take our schooling seriously and took advantage of that- the tourism industry. I didn't want to do that so i migrated, but always looked back home. There are a lot of different opportunities just not qualified individuals.

Overseas is good only if you make up your mind to employed to someone but in Jamaican you can put your own skills in making your own business and employment of other by helping out fellow citizens its better than stay employed until you retire and you might retired with a empty account and you might retired on a little penchan or died before that age and poisen with medication
@@marvapatterson9886 exactly marva there's a huge percentage of Jamaicans living on government assistance or poor in America that could have returned and invested however are now over 60 and 70 years old and are ashamed or in denial.
I grew up in the grill Negril I've always wanted to move back home and make it a better place for the locals, I'm happy to see someone at least got a chance to make that come true for my people. Someday i'll going back and do my part too.
People make choices and thats just that, some choose to leave the island for better opportunity and some stay on the island for better opportunity both are right none is better than none.
Jamaican outside sending the most money in Jamaica that's why these banks can see so much funds to built so much things and the criminal them in power don't like to say it we send billions of us $ in Jamaica every year if that money stop going Jamaica bank wouldn't able to lend money to start business the hotel money dont really stay in Jamaica

This is so exciting to me. I plan on investing in Jamaica because my parents retired there (and they married at the Travellers), they live way up in Davyton in Manchester Parish but Negril has always been a must-stop for 17 out of my 18 trips to Jamaica and I am blown away by the level of development since Covid. I was thinking of saving for development around Aligator Pond because it's closer to them, but you have me thinking of Negril again. Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of money and I'm wondering how I can pitch in and invest in smaller ways to start. Perhaps you can do an episode on that, bite-sized investment ideas. BTW, I love the idea of a recreational Center as I'm into health and wellness and I am moving into that as a career. I plan on eventually coming down and working as a Pilates Instructor so I can come more than once a year. I also love the idea of a retirement complex, as I'm always worried about how to be there for my family as they get older while developing and thriving for myself.... They're currently in their mid 70's. I love your channel, thank you for bringing all this amazing information on growth in Jamaica!

Wow really good interview. Love the focus on investing in education. Trade schools and service training facilities would be a win win solution to those impending threats.
Among many other things Negril needs a high school . Our growing young population needs fun and educational things to do after school and work . The community should enjoy a playhouse theater and cinemas .

Great interview and super proud of my fellow brother. However, while I appreciate the content, I think it's missing healthy discourse on classism and "the great divide." The obvious elephant in the room (given the timing of this interview) is also the rising corruption and the risks that are involved in A: Returning and B: Investing one's talent and/or resources in Jamaica. (Two key elements considered by most return residents whether for business or leisure). Additionally, while I love #BrandJamaica 🇯🇲 it is severely lacking in a plan for diversity, equity and inclusivity. Let's face it: "Success" in Jamaica outside of the music and entertainment sectors, has a "look." It is a brand in itself. For this reason, a lot of talented Jamaicans abroad, do not return to contribute their talents..............,, That aside, super proud of the success and talent of my fellow brothers and sisters. 🇯🇲Out of Many One People 🤜🏽🤛🏽

There is a very good reason for the brain drain, and for the vast diaspora of Jamaicans overseas. I miss the beauty of home very much, but I like being able to walk around in public in Canada with my jewelry. I like being able to park my car in my driveway and know that it will be out there the next morning.
I like being able to build my house where I want, without having to be "vigilant" about the envious surveillance of my neighbours.
I like being able to walk into a bank and do my business in an efficient 20 mins., instead of a "laidback" 2 hours.
And we won't talk about that weird exchange rate. When we left Jamaica in 1970, the exchange rate was J$.70c = US$1.00.
🤔 once you “brand” Negril do you ruin its unique beauty & quality? 😢 I appreciate you young guy’s returning with your expertise & love of Jamaica, as long as you keep the soon come “tone” , eco, basic services improved yet honor Jamaicans over privatization ❤️ 🙏🏽 Jamaica is a country, large & diverse. Every town doesn’t need to be a lead tourist area 😢

Quite a tricky topic. The investments brings in jobs, which I’m all for. The issue arises when those investment gains aren’t passed/reflected locally and this worries me as it’s bound to cause a rift which could cause protests/riots from the local Jamaicans. Hopefully the wages catches up before that. Lovely content as always

Lawd thank you soooo much for this. I love your honesty and the key topics you have spoken on.. Health and way of life primarily .. It's so ironic Jamaica is " so bad" yet it has created all these persons who are excelling abroad who got that foundation.
I believe that the perception is there isn't money to be made while the shift I believe that needs to happen is for persons to take the exposure and put it back into our home and create opportunities for our own.
To add to what you're saying I feel our banking system needs to reduce the barrier to entry as well for business specifically.
I could go on and on and to many sound crazy but my answer to those persons is

It's so disappointing how Jamaica doesn't really give their own people affordable resources. Some are fortunate to have it, but a lot have to migrate overseas to get it and then when they return with tons of wealth and fame, "affluent" Jamaicans flock to them and the nation gives them so much public recognition. Sadly, some Jamaicans aren't "Proud to be Jamaican" because of that.
Dreams seem too far fetched.
Maybe I'm just uninformed of how the country operates, but it seems (mostly) the extremely smart, "educated" and/or legacy wealthy, make it much more easily.
Fair point. I’m hoping Jamaica can reverse this. I believe we are on the path to doing so. I certainly will be doing my part to see that this becomes the reality of the future

I am shocked that you would describe Jamaica (or any country for that matter) as third world. That is one of the first things we need to change...(how we see ourselves).
I’d say this is more so how we’re seen from the outside. We’re also still categorized as a developing nation. We’re definitely not a wealthy nation but we’re definitely not in the same category as a Haiti from an economic and political stability stand point

Jamaica has a high rate of brain drain because nepotism is rampant. Yes, a lot of Jamaican’s are capable of adding great value to the country but how can they do that if the opportunity to show what they can do is denied? In Jamaica it often who you know and not what you have to offer and that is something that needs to be addressed.

Remember young man, that Jamaica is who or what she is. She is not Japanese, or any other asiatic, though its an admixture, doubt whether tourist are going there to sample "Shushi" stick to who you are, be proud and add small mixture. Japanese not going to Jamaica to eat their dish made better at home with the correct ingredients. There.
But the Jamaicans that aren't going all the way to Japan want to experience the rest of the world. Don't forget that part.

The Japanese may not be going to Jamaica to eat sushi but they have no problem performing Reggae in Japan. They barrow from us we can certainly barrow from them. I also did hear them say in this discussion they were solely catering to the Japanese tourist.
I can never understand people who always talking about what would happen if Jamaican's never leave Jamaica smh people leave Jamaica to better their life and its Jamaicans outside sending back money back in Jamaica if we stop send money home Jamaica will fell it Jamaica don't have anything to after our politicians is a bunch of criminals
All Jamaicans home and abroad are playing their part to improve Jamaica.
Be careful though because the language you guys are speaking sounds a lot like gentrification. Not everyone in and out of Jamaica is seeking the white Western modern mentality and lifestyle. Many of us are tired of eating sushi and going to restaurants all the time or living in a concrete jungle and wanna experience real life in Jamaice going back to nature and experience a more laid back and basic lifestyle. Are you guys when planning all the modernization also thinking of people more interested in natural lifestyles and should there be room for us to live?
I hate that term third world. It is rooted in racism and western elitism that too many people adapt unfortunately. And another note, hoping you get more sponsorship for your set.
