I'm currently living in the US and there's not a year that goes by that I haven't go home to Jamaica, sometimes three times per year....I am definitely moving back, I probably won't wait until I retire, I also encourage other Jamaicans to do the same or even to just visit....Jamaica is a beautiful Island it has its issues like every where else.
It's not where you live,but how you live.Please make sure you own a piece of paradise for the sake of your grandchildren.I wish you all the best. We are on the same path.

I just moved back home 8 months now and I absolutely have no regrets. There are lots of challenges like going in the bank to do a transaction which will take up to half the business day, same for the tax office. I’m a little too young to retire so I’m thinking of what to do. It’ll definitely not be to open a business cause the vultures will be coming for protection money to protect me from them🤦🏾♀️. Anywhere in the world you go you have to exercise caution. Same crimes being committed here are committed abroad. Most violent crimes involved some mix up but people won’t say their relatives wrong someone or involved in wrongs, easier to tell the world how dem wicked a Jamaica. Crab in a barrel mentality is real here and also In other cultures. Better to die here than in Babylon cause here’s where my heart is, plus, way less stressful if you know how to live modestly.🇯🇲🇯🇲❤️❤️🙏🏾🙏🏾

As you have clearly noted negativity, crime and obstacles are present every and anywhere in our beautiful world. Just have to stay present and focus in any situation. Sadly, it often takes a while to get anything done in Ja but take it all in stride, could be worse. When it comes to business I would not used what can negatively happen as a deterrent not to start or open one. Especially if its a good idea and the market needs it. It all depends on the kind of business and where you want to set it up. Please do not kill your goals and dreams because of fear and what you think bad mind people are likely to do. Healthcare is a great concern so happy you touched on it. I only want to add that the best healthcare is prevention... Taking care of yourself can prevent or diminish a lot of major health concerns.No matter where in the world you live if you fail to take care of yourself you compromise your health.In the States UK and Canada confinement during the winter months can be brutal on the mental state. In my opinion Jamaica offers a great opportunity for the promotion of good health. I continue to plan my move and can't wait for the final stage. Thanks Throp for these excellent bits of knowledge. Suzette yes, there is crime every where, however it is a fact that Jamaica currently Has the highest murder rate per every hundred thousand people, of any country in the world, yes Jamaica is a Lovely place to Love, and most of the people are good people, but we should not forget the truth of Very the very high rate of crime and violence In Jamaica, Many returning residents have been killed over the years.

Compared to Chicago, New York etc the crime isn't too different but compared to Canada, Europe and most of Asia it's night and day.

There are places here in Florida that is even worse than trench town that I will not go. Yes, Jamaica is a small island but the crime is more hyped up than it actually is. On a global scale Jamaica is not even in the top 10 of countries with highest crime/murder rate, and within the Caribbean Trinidad and Guyana listed in the top 10. Again Jamaica has a problem that needs to addressed but it’s not the worst.
Fantastic interview with a great guest! I'm so glad you touched on healthcare for potential retirees because it is so important. Aside from prevention (eating well, remaining active) and acute care (private hospitals, imaging, etc) another really crucial area to focus on is long term care or aging in place. I find that many people home and abroad don't spend enough time considering what that will look like. The likelihood of needing a caregiver or nursing home is high, especially if you don't have immediate family available to provide that care when the time comes. So for retirees the question of "What does aging in place in Jamaica look like for me?" should be of great importance. I know nursing homes in Jamaica are often negatively portrayed in the media as well so I would love to have her discuss her thoughts on that in a Part 2. My family runs a caring, clean nursing home in Mandeville which anyone would consider more than comparable to what you'd have access to in the US, UK or CA, so they are out there but may be difficult to find without proper forethought/planning. Millionaires living in Jamaica can also be encouraged to start trading schools, they build the largest homes and drive the best cars but they should be encouraged to give back to the younger generation.

Loves this interview, especially the advise about building while on site in Jamaica. An Jamaican/Englishman who was building his house in the area that i had bought a lot, told me to wait until i could sit on site and manage the building of my house. I didnot listened to him and i learned the hard way. After two contractors, i decided to only build while i was on site.
I am a Healthcare Professional and prior to living in the US, I worked as a medical sales representative in Jamaica, so I made friends with many Doctors and Nurses. I remember being stopped by the Police who pointed 8 m16s at both my wife and myself for no reason this got me thinking about how easy it would be for us to be killed without any recourse. As a Healthcare Professional I visited the Hospitals that I used to sell products and was appalled by the condition. I Love Jamaica but Security, Healthcare and Education has to be a priority. The General population needs a remedial education program so that they can think more constructive.

I moved to JA with mum plus 5 and schooled over there Loved it. Came back to the Uk in the late seventies. And every yr i am back in JA apart from these past 2years with the pandemic. I am also with the NHT The family house is there which i have turned the car poch into my bedroom but i want my own small house. people have tried putting me off but that is the place i am most happy. The thing is my 3 children and 7grand children are all here. lots of brothers and sisters but im more worried about my kids & grands. I know if not for the pandemic i would be there. It has really been putting me off but listening to talk u Mrs Bradley u have really put my mind back to before the Pandemic. your right about people from Uk🇬🇧 who think they are untouchable lol. And i am the sort of person who is private and always have my car there dont eant nobody ripping me off. But i also like to mix and i am also very careful who comes to the house when i am there🇯🇲 on holiday. when they come to visit i entertain them on the verander which is big enough. I used to ask mum why she never lets people into the house i never knew why until years later she allowed my family member to use the bathroom and they ended up taking something that belong to me. i just popped down the road got it back though. So i would know how to live there im still trying thank you for your talk. I learnt a lot more from the program.🇯🇲🇬🇧🇯🇲

This is a truly inspiring interview. I like the way the interviewee places a positive spin on things which is very uplifting. However, we must be realistic and understand that simply 'wishing away' Jamaica's vicious crime monster won't necessarily keeep you safe. Regarding health-care, here again we need to be realistic -unless you're blessed with good health, be aware that you'll pay dearly if something goes seriously wrong with you. That is a fact. But if you can somehow manage to safely navigate your way around the Island's murderous predators, and the corrupt money-hungry Lawyers and other professionals eager to rip you off, then Jamaica is indeed a fantastic and beautiful place to retire.
I encourage all my friends to move back home, some are skeptical but most are excited especially because I encourage them to invest in short term rentals through Airbnb. Best decision I've ever made. Best of both worlds. 🇯🇲 forever 🙂
I TOTALLY agree with this lady about not attaching yourself to a church. I feel exactly the same. Really cannot take the hypocrisy and fake behaviour, so avoid it at all cost. Doing good and helping one another isn't and shouldn't be about church or religion. God is not a building. Sadly most jamaicans judge you on the basis of whether you attend church or not- how shallow??
Interesting. Hypocrisy is everywhere. People don't stop working because of Hypocrisy on their job. They don't stop buying goods and services because of Hypocrisy in consumer driven enterprises. They don't forsake their lived ones and friends. You will never avoid hypo. You work around it. You choose yo be better and an example.

I’m born & raised in the U.K. Although from North London, I’d like to say in defence of South London - where Brixton is - in the heart of the Black or African Caribbean community (in South London) I have never heard that said before. To an extent.... however... many still eaten foods like cowfoot are detrimental to health....my family eat way too much meat and starch...however...fruits and vegetables are in abundance there...

Great interview. She spoke a lot of wisdom. I hope to make the move before I retire... But I live in NY and I know Jamaicans who retire to Florida because they say "too much crime in Jamaica"... When they buy a house in Florida they buy a house with security alarm and in "nice" areas. But for some reason people retire to Jamaica and feel they shouldn't have to have alarm system or can just go build right next to poor people and expect to not have any issues. It doesn't make sense.

It is said that Jamaica has a lot of crime. I am not overly concern about that. As Elaine said one should be careful and alert. I am still heading back there someday soon. Atlanta is only 2 hours away, so reasonable healthcare is accessible. Thanks for the interview. Very helpful.
U forgot about the option of private healthcare...I have several relatives that have private healthcare as a benefit attached to their employment...also... many...that are in a position to have private healthcare insurance (monthly policy fee such as BUPA)...and rec instant care when needed...
The NHS does have its problems but urgent care is always available. My worse medical experience wasn’t via the NHS - infact, they were my saving grace. So although it’s not perfect - it’s a lot better than most countries medical services, included the USA (in my opinion). I’d never travel to the USA without medical insurance. Thanks & Peace 🙏🤠

Let me try to help this lady and this young man, that Jamaica useto have a lot of training centers across the country.It is the same jlp party government ministers them dismantled, those training centers in the 1980s. That is why I don't like them at all, training centers was across Jamaica.There was a school in Hanover named Knockalva, there was one in Manchester,in Trelawny In Flamouth,4 in St,Ann, 3 in St, Catherine,3 in Kingston & St Andrew the corporate areas, one in Clarendon. Just to mentioned a few of them lady, I guessed there was two German schools in Kingston. Where you could go and learned a skill , and same jlp party government ministers them locked them down.Most of the houses across Jamaica was built by the pnp government ministers them, the Jlp party government ministers them. Does hardly do anything to enhanced the country, when I heard this lady was talking about nursing. Under the PNP party government ministers them, the government useto have nurses. Going around the whole Jamaica looking after old people, because they useto go to the schools. Also the difference clinics and as soon as, the jlp party government ministers them won in 1980. They dismantled all the social services programs for the poor people them, that is why the country is like that. I remembered in the 1970s when ganja was running in Jamaica, when you come to St,Ann a Saturday morning at Brown's Town Market.Man would be there giving away money to people, so they can go to buy their foods stuffs. Those ganja men useto have millions of us dollars, and as soon as the jlp party government ministers them came to power. They used the United States government used their black hawk helicopters 🚁 to killed out the ganja and the coconut 🥥. Just to bring in their soya bean oil 🪔, nobody doesn't want to speak out about this evil Jlp party government ministers them. They are the ones who destroyed the country like this, they are the ones who. Helped the destroyed the Bauxite companies them, the Bauxite companies them useto run Jamaica unless they messed them up. Sometimes I heard some little people coming back from foreign a few thousand dollars, only because that the Jamaican dollar. Devalues so much, that is does not values anything again.I remembered when Bauxite companies them paided retroactive money, millions of dollars.You could just walked into any stores in area and,buy brand new TV, Fridge, Stove, bedroom set, you named it.Those was the good old days and, when these wicked jlp party government ministers came to power in 1980s . That is when Jamaica take the turn for the worse, because all the infrastructure . That was in place for the betterment of Jamaica, those no good jlp party government ministers destroyed it.I can speak my mind, because I know what am saying. I started to worked at Bauxite company in 1973, and they was paying the most money in Jamaica. The majority of the younger generation does not know what am saying, because a lot of them wasn't born as yet.
She touched on one of my concerns - lack of culture of the arts - theater etc - not even a movie theater in the Negril area - there’s do much more than just the same old music !!!! Well, i must admit that your Chanel is the most professional set i have seen there, good work...now the lady you have as a guest is on the privileged side of life and that is a good thing the problem i have is there are many Jamaicans that are barely making it living off social security ect and would like to come home there choices are very limited as to where they can live eg; they may have a piece of land left by there family so my question is what can you say to them.

While I don’t agree with her claim that crime in Jamaica is not any worse than other countries, I do agree that returning Jamaicans can live and thrive there. I have scores of relatives who live well in Jamaica after returning from Canada, the US and the UK. In many ways, they’re doing better than I am in the US when it comes to quality of life and escaping racism. Jamaica is a truly beautiful country. Love my visits there.

London is my home, and I love it here, love the convenience of everything. Don't mind the weather. JA my bolt hole. Healthcare is a great concern so happy you touched on it. I only want to add that the best healthcare is prevention... Taking care of yourself can prevent or diminish a lot of major health concerns.No matter where in the world you live if you fail to take care of yourself you compromise your health.In the States UK and Canada confinement during the winter months can be brutal on the mental state. In my opinion Jamaica offers a great opportunity for the promotion of good health. I continue to plan my move and can't wait for the final stage. Thanks Throp for these excellent bits of knowledge. Compared to Chicago, New York etc the crime isn't too different but compared to Canada, Europe and most of Asia it's night and day.

There are places here in Florida that is even worse than trench town that I will not go. Yes, Jamaica is a small island but the crime is more hyped up than it actually is. On a global scale Jamaica is not even in the top 10 of countries with highest crime/murder rate, and within the Caribbean Trinidad and Guyana listed in the top 10. Again Jamaica has a problem that needs to addressed but it’s not the worst.

Fantastic interview with a great guest! I'm so glad you touched on healthcare for potential retirees because it is so important. Aside from prevention (eating well, remaining active) and acute care (private hospitals, imaging, etc) another really crucial area to focus on is long term care or aging in place. I find that many people home and abroad don't spend enough time considering what that will look like. The likelihood of needing a caregiver or nursing home is high, especially if you don't have immediate family available to provide that care when the time comes. So for retirees the question of "What does aging in place in Jamaica look like for me?" should be of great importance. I know nursing homes in Jamaica are often negatively portrayed in the media as well so I would love to have her discuss her thoughts on that in a Part 2. My family runs a caring, clean nursing home in Mandeville which anyone would consider more than comparable to what you'd have access to in the US, UK or CA, so they are out there but may be difficult to find without proper forethought/planning. Loves this interview, especially the advise about building while on site in Jamaica. An Jamaican/Englishman who was building his house in the area that i had bought a lot, told me to wait until i could sit on site and manage the building of my house. I didnot listened to him and i learned the hard way. After two contractors, i decided to only build while i was on site.

I am a Healthcare Professional and prior to living in the US, I worked as a medical sales representative in Jamaica, so I made friends with many Doctors and Nurses. I remember being stopped by the Police who pointed 8 m16s at both my wife and myself for no reason this got me thinking about how easy it would be for us to be killed without any recourse. As a Healthcare Professional I visited the Hospitals that I used to sell products and was appalled by the condition. I Love Jamaica but Security, Healthcare and Education has to be a priority. The General population needs a remedial education program so that they can think more constructive.

Everthing you say was right. I moved to JA with mum plus 5 and schooled over there Loved it. Came back to the Uk in the late seventies.
And every yr i am back in JA apart from these past 2years with the pandemic. I am also with the NHT The family house is there which i have turned the car poch into my bedroom but i want my own small house. people have tried putting me off but that is the place i am most happy.
The thing is my 3 children and 7grand children are all here. lots of brothers and sisters but im more worried about my kids & grands. I know if not for the pandemic i would be there. It has really been putting me off but listening to talk u Mrs Bradley u have really put my mind back to before the Pandemic. your right about people from Uk🇬🇧 who think they are untouchable lol. And i am the sort of person who is private and always have my car there dont eant nobody ripping me off. But i also like to mix and i am also very careful who comes to the house when i am there🇯🇲 on holiday. when they come to visit i entertain them on the verander which is big enough. I used to ask mum why she never lets people into the house i never knew why until years later she allowed my family member to use the bathroom and they ended up taking something that belong to me. i just popped down the road got it back though.
So i would know how to live there im still trying thank you for your talk. I learnt a lot more from the program.🇯🇲🇬🇧🇯🇲

This is a truly inspiring interview. I like the way the interviewee places a positive spin on things which is very uplifting. However, we must be realistic and understand that simply 'wishing away' Jamaica's vicious crime monster won't necessarily keeep you safe. Regarding health-care, here again we need to be realistic -unless you're blessed with good health, be aware that you'll pay dearly if something goes seriously wrong with you. That is a fact. But if you can somehow manage to safely navigate your way around the Island's murderous predators, and the corrupt money-hungry Lawyers and other professionals eager to rip you off, then Jamaica is indeed a fantastic and beautiful place to retire.

I TOTALLY agree with this lady about not attaching yourself to a church. I feel exactly the same. Really cannot take the hypocrisy and fake behaviour, so avoid it at all cost. Doing good and helping one another isn't and shouldn't be about church or religion. God is not a building. Sadly most jamaicans judge you on the basis of whether you attend church or not- how shallow??

Interesting. Hypocrisy is everywhere. People don't stop working because of Hypocrisy on their job. They don't stop buying goods and services because of Hypocrisy in consumer driven enterprises. They don't forsake their lived ones and friends. You will never avoid hypo. You work around it. You choose yo be better and an example.

From a health perspective, Jamaican food is healthier. Mostly non GMO and meat not pumped full of hormones etc

To an extent.... however... many still eaten foods like cowfoot are detrimental to health....my family eat way too much meat and starch...however...fruits and vegetables are in abundance there...
They destroy a lot of that good food with the use of Maggie! And then that white flour and rice from China.

Great interview. She spoke a lot of wisdom. I hope to make the move before I retire... But I live in NY and I know Jamaicans who retire to Florida because they say "too much crime in Jamaica"... When they buy a house in Florida they buy a house with security alarm and in "nice" areas. But for some reason people retire to Jamaica and feel they shouldn't have to have alarm system or can just go build right next to poor people and expect to not have any issues. It doesn't make sense.

It is said that Jamaica has a lot of crime. I am not overly concern about that. As Elaine said one should be careful and alert. I am still heading back there someday soon. Atlanta is only 2 hours away, so reasonable healthcare is accessible. Thanks for the interview. Very helpful.

In the UK you have to go on a lengthy waiting list to have an MRI. If you go private it would cost a lot more than it costs in Jamaica.

U forgot about the option of private healthcare...I have several relatives that have private healthcare as a benefit attached to their employment...also... many...that are in a position to have private healthcare insurance (monthly policy fee such as BUPA)...and rec instant care when needed...
The NHS does have its problems but urgent care is always available. My worse medical experience wasn’t via the NHS - infact, they were my saving grace. So although it’s not perfect - it’s a lot better than most countries medical services, included the USA (in my opinion). I’d never travel to the USA without medical insurance. Thanks & Peace 🙏🤠

Let me try to help this lady and this young man, that Jamaica useto have a lot of training centers across the country.It is the same jlp party government ministers them dismantled, those training centers in the 1980s. That is why I don't like them at all, training centers was across Jamaica.There was a school in Hanover named Knockalva, there was one in Manchester,in Trelawny In Flamouth,4 in St,Ann, 3 in St, Catherine,3 in Kingston & St Andrew the corporate areas, one in Clarendon. Just to mentioned a few of them lady, I guessed there was two German schools in Kingston. Where you could go and learned a skill , and same jlp party government ministers them locked them down.Most of the houses across Jamaica was built by the pnp government ministers them, the Jlp party government ministers them. Does hardly do anything to enhanced the country, when I heard this lady was talking about nursing. Under the PNP party government ministers them, the government useto have nurses. Going around the whole Jamaica looking after old people, because they useto go to the schools. Also the difference clinics and as soon as, the jlp party government ministers them won in 1980. They dismantled all the social services programs for the poor people them, that is why the country is like that. I remembered in the 1970s when ganja was running in Jamaica, when you come to St,Ann a Saturday morning at Brown's Town Market.Man would be there giving away money to people, so they can go to buy their foods stuffs. Those ganja men useto have millions of us dollars, and as soon as the jlp party government ministers them came to power. They used the United States government used their black hawk helicopters 🚁 to killed out the ganja and the coconut 🥥. Just to bring in their soya bean oil 🪔, nobody doesn't want to speak out about this evil Jlp party government ministers them. They are the ones who destroyed the country like this, they are the ones who. Helped the destroyed the Bauxite companies them, the Bauxite companies them useto run Jamaica unless they messed them up. Sometimes I heard some little people coming back from foreign a few thousand dollars, only because that the Jamaican dollar. Devalues so much, that is does not values anything again.I remembered when Bauxite companies them paided retroactive money, millions of dollars.You could just walked into any stores in area and,buy brand new TV, Fridge, Stove, bedroom set, you named it.Those was the good old days and, when these wicked jlp party government ministers came to power in 1980s . That is when Jamaica take the turn for the worse, because all the infrastructure . That was in place for the betterment of Jamaica, those no good jlp party government ministers destroyed it.I can speak my mind, because I know what am saying. I started to worked at Bauxite company in 1973, and they was paying the most money in Jamaica. The majority of the younger generation does not know what am saying, because a lot of them wasn't born as yet.
She touched on one of my concerns - lack of culture of the arts - theater etc - not even a movie theater in the Negril area - there’s do much more than just the same old music !!!!

Well, i must admit that your Chanel is the most professional set i have seen there, good work...now the lady you have as a guest is on the privileged side of life and that is a good thing the problem i have is there are many Jamaicans that are barely making it living off social security ect and would like to come home there choices are very limited as to where they can live eg; they may have a piece of land left by there family so my question is what can you say to them.

While I don’t agree with her claim that crime in Jamaica is not any worse than other countries, I do agree that returning Jamaicans can live and thrive there.
I have scores of relatives who live well in Jamaica after returning from Canada, the US and the UK. In many ways, they’re doing better than I am in the US when it comes to quality of life and escaping racism. Jamaica is a truly beautiful country. Love my visits there.

This is really true ..retired or visiting back home ..even back in Africa ..be nice and associate with people ..but be careful ..figure out if people just want you because of what you will give to them .. or just happy to be with you ..trust is the key ..be careful !
