    Oh I've been playing the game on and off for awhile and I'm a white mage I always put regen on the tank at the start before pulls and never realized that's why I take aggro when they use provoke so thanks for the tip there.

    • @miyuden4118
      @miyuden4118 3 года назад +15

      You can use that shield thing, don't remember the name.
      Before the pull ofc. that doesn't give you aggro but gives the Tank a tiny shield.
      As Tank I usually click the regen off my bar when I get it before pull to avoid having to run back and forth to gather aggro from all mobs.

    • @miketinkler79
      @miketinkler79 3 года назад +18

      Yeah divine benison the start of pull. Regen when tank stops. Then 600 holys. Rinse and repeat

    • @FirelighttheKing
      @FirelighttheKing 3 года назад +21

      It’s fine to use it during a pull (and in fact I find it handy cause it means that I soak some damage and then don’t need to heal the tank as much), but you do need to make sure that you run straight to the tank if you do this, so that the tank can easily pick it up. You just need to make sure that you’re not making the tank run around like a headless chicken

    • @miyuden4118
      @miyuden4118 3 года назад +6

      @@FirelighttheKing That works actually too. I for myself just feel like a shit Tank if others get dmg from something that is not AOE and it bugs me. But as long as you survive it and bring the mobs directly to the tank so that his AOE's get the mobs off you easily it is a viable option. Looks dirty but it works.

    • @ryno4ever433
      @ryno4ever433 3 года назад +4

      Honestly though if you get aggro, they're shit. It's fine for you to precast regen. Pulling with provoke is not the only way and is such a minor time optimization that's it's completely unnecessary. If the tank times his aoe correctly, you will very briefly get aggro, but the tank will have it again before the mobs get anywhere near you.

    Very good advice that I’ll be using as a fresh 80 tank. But more importantly there are a million guide videos out there, what separates them is clarity and conciseness. You do an excellent job of getting to the point without rambling or adding anything confusing. You are very clear in your explanations and offer easy to understand examples. Great video 👍

    #3 is a huge pet peeve of mine when I'm on WHM. I've seen way too many tanks do wall to wall pulls, use mitigations while I'm chain stunning the packs and after 3 Holy casts the mitigations have fallen off and their ass is on the menu. If you see a White Mage sprinting right behind you during the pulls, hold off on the mitigations until you are below 50-60% health. If the healer is lagging behind for whatever reason, feel free to pop your CDs according to your judgement to get a breathing room until the first Holy hits and the regens start ticking.

    The mob pulling tips were excellent and apply even to lower level content and are nice and digestible for newer tanks (or ones like me stuck in lower content hell while constantly getting distracted for hundreds of hours), but once you get to the boss facing stuff it goes way over my head and seems to be about a million mini-rules that will be different for each and every later-end boss and depends solely on your own experience over many, many times fighting the boss yourself, which is too much for ME with quite a bit more experience than the newbies coming in, so idk. I guess the basic little tidbits of 'face it north unless it's doing an attack where it faces another direction' is okay enough to implement for now, though

      Yeah I learned a lot in one moment things I never considered about overpower as I typically treat it as the worst tank aoe skill in pulling purely because while mythril tempest alone doesn't do much damage at all it at least pulls like the other tank pulls.
      The only thing I could see getting in the way of this new overpower tech is my auto-lock I use to easy strafe and turn bosses. Because of the lock the camera might fix weird and disorientate my run.

    3:35 You can still do this with standard controls if you hold the face-camera button before attacking. You just have to make sure you're turning the camera while you do it to instantly snap back forwards; jumping makes it more free.

      What I found in my like first 300 hrs of playing is for me if i hold right click (which turns the character) and just jiggle the camera very slightly back and forth while attacking and running, youll still do the attack and be running in the same direction and not have to turn backwards

    Omggg yesss I totally agree with not re-turning the boss every time. And it’s not just melee that will thank you for it. I had an atrocious thok ast thok run as a blm when the tank would always re-turn the boss after every slaughter mechanic to face true north even though the entire raid had already adjusted to his new back position. I had my leylines down even and the tank just spun the boss right back at me and I ate all his cleaves. It was so hard to commit to a cast when the tank was being so unpredictable :(
    Also I was the astro for your dungeon run of Heroes’ gauntlet and I appreciated your tanking a lot. 🙏

    Those are useful tips. I learned them alone during my first year on FF14, but for new players those are gold. Expecially the "keep the boss firm, don't move around". For Asmongold, during his Garuda extreme he learned it a bit, but during his Titan HM... OMG! He was moving around and moving his camera like a crazy fidget spinner. It was a giant headache for all the viewers.

    In refute: Tip#1 You can use your ranged attack (Tomahawk, Unmend, Sheild Lob, etc.) Then weave provoke, then Aoe for a very solid lead while intercepting the healer or dps. It should all fit in provided you are at most in peloton. You might need to stagger step if sprinting.
    Tip 2: Solid AF
    Tip 3: Your WHM may prioritize applying Dia or Stone at the begining. THis doesnt make them just a cure bot, but is a valid tut to you precasting TBN, to then move into the Holy phase , while maximizing your dps as well (spoiler: this is actually suboptimal. Holy OP)
    Tip 4 : Almost always solidus! Don't be afraid to experiment. They don't always tell you about completely dodgeable mechanics in the guides. Sometimes dodgeing slightly out of or running very far away from a mechanic as a tank will completely avoid or cancel a mechanic. Even raid wide damage.
    Tip 5: The golden rule.

    1:33 "In FF14, overhealing generates more aggro than regular healing." If I recall correctly/am understanding the aggro breakdown on the ffxiv reddit wiki, it's HOTs that generate more aggro than immediately resolved healing, not necessarily overheal that generates the aggro. No actual impact to the point you're making (i.e. make sure regen is off prepull), but helpful for a healer to know the distinction.

  • @uberpinkwarrior
    @uberpinkwarrior 3 года назад +1

    A thing for Amhuluk (first boss in new expert): if you have 2 ranged dps, you are actually better off not centring him. If he isn't centred, if you are far out (like any blm will be), they will be out of range for wide blaster. This lets them utterly ignore the mechanic. If you centre them, they will often get targeted, and all of a sudden they need to take time to move out of the aoe (which can cost them up to 2 GCDs). Most tanks either don't know this (and don't centre him), or *always* centre even if they don't have melee.

  • @manbearpigsereal
    @manbearpigsereal 3 года назад +5

    pre-pull regen really isn't a problem any more though, the extra heal ticks while mass pulling is worth the extra bit of work the tank needs to do, and if the mobs go to the healer, it doesn't matter, they regen themselves and keep running with you.
    Warriors and Gunbreakers have an especially easy time with that, as they can just Equilibrium/Aurora to snap aggro on to them as they run.

    • @ashitakaharuo
      @ashitakaharuo 3 года назад

      when healing i usually use the regen after the tank has aggro on the first group, so it's ticking while we're on the way to the second group. that mostly does the trick.

As it is right now, I had to watch this video and then go back, find the timestamp that the card pops, and click on it. Also, bear in mind that RUclips's algorithm promotes videos that include RUclips links in their descriptions (rather than 3rd party) as if I click on another RUclips click -> I have more interaction with the platform -> more money for RUclips -> more money for you.

    I've been a tank main for almost a year now and somehow I never thought of pulling trash packs with Provoke. But now that you point it out, it makes sense; you're right about it being longer range than the ranged attack, and the enmity on it being relative to the rest of the party doesn't matter since it's ogcd and you can just use your aoe once they start moving.

  • @OneLynnK
    @OneLynnK 3 года назад +3

    A niche tip for Gunbreakers, I've heard Aurora is a great way to maintain aggro from a particularly aggressive group of dps players as the regen gives you enmity. As far as I can tell though, it's extremely situational and you're probably safer using the standard methods instead of sacrificing Aurora

    • @SholPK
      @SholPK 3 года назад

      From my experience with this technique, if your dps are so aggressive that they could pull aggro mid pull, the pack probably won't last that long anyway so you won't really need it for mitigation. It also heals the damage you take from the few autos you will receive if you're not shielded, so it's not all wasted.

    If a healer pulls the aggro on a trash mob or two because of something like a pre-emptive regen for a couple of attacks and the tank doesn't immediately catch the aggro back until they arrive at the death ball location, I see that merely as making use of healer's own otherwise useless HP pool for mitigation, allowing you to focus on more damage. They'll be soon back up to full once we stand in the heal bubble for a bit as they spam Holy or whatever.

    I think another tip to add in as well is using Stun as a mitigation skill when you don't have a WHM in the party. Use it especially on an enemy in the pack that has the most HP (so it doesn't die in the middle of the stun duration) to get to most effectiveness out of the whole duration. Do not stun telegraphed AoE ability that you can easily walk out of because during the duration of the cast, it is not doing any auto attacks on you, it's basically downtime for them. Be smart on when and how you use stun.

    I play healer main in FF14 and regen is'nt an issue with good tanks. I help out by running side by side with the tank and often stand in the middle of the mobs so I can Holy them down (Whm) to reduce damage that members take. But from a healers perspective, I often have issues with tanks hitting sprint and running ahead, many times resulting in them being half dead before I can even get within heal range, though some times they have died as a result. Of course there's always the tank that forget to turn their stance on or can't look up to see the rest of the group is dying due to some spawn they don't have any aggro on at all. And yes, the quality of a groups Whm varies greatly as well. Some i'm sure they are playing one just to level it and know nothing about healing. I'm glad you covered the "spinning around" crap since I can't count the number of tanks that have cleaved the raid. I can appreciate the tanks responsibility for facing mobs the right way for the up coming mechanics but consider it a healers co-job to know what is coming as well to optimize keeping everyone alive.. Experience is golden in that case. Good video, especially for the new comers. Personally I found the flood of what I call the "Covid Commando's" during the pandemic to be trying and frustrating as most were merely looking for something to do and not of what I would call 'gaming quality' but hopefully they learned and got better.

      Under I think Character config, you can change how your target filtering works.
      For example, while your weapon is drawn as a tank, you could limit the Left/Right D-pad buttons to only be able to cycle through enemies(because you have the party list Up/Down for healing and defensives like Blackest Night), this would stop you getting bogged down by NPCs, pets and anything in the arena that you need to interact with.

    Revisit this video because recently I feel like to play dark knight.
    Anyway, last night in castrum msq roulette, during the pull after 2nd boss (where Cid follows us), a dps died and they were angry that they didn't get a heal. "I was low hp for 10 seconds but still no heals". When a healer said sorry they went saying "tank fault for not pulling all the mobs". From beginning, I noticed I kept losing aggro and I thought maybe because warrior did more damage than I did. But now that I watch the video I guess maybe they also used provoke to grab the aggro.
    Thing is why was the dps the only one who died and far from where the group gathered?
    Later on, I queued as AST for a dungeon and I met again the same dps. Turned out just because they were ranged class that they kept running around, moving and not staying still. Who knows maybe a healer did try to heal them back in castrum but they ran off 🤣

I was thinking instead of tip 1 to 5, could you name the tips? For instance, tip 1 would be Pulling tip, tip 2 = Death balls etc. This way there would be consistency with the mechanic names and then people can use them or understand them, in game, when others mention them. Amazing video tho, this has been so helpful!

      To not have to fiddle with my pet, I would just shield myself on pulls and run close to the tank so the mobs dont run aroun if the aggro happens, I get hit 0-2 times and its not a huge deal and the mobs dont run around crazy, tank going to get aggro quickly and pretty easy. Just put yourself in the path the tank is trying to pull as to not get them running around after you on accident. You can also, as suggested, turn pet stances on and off all the time.

    The 3rd tip actually depends. For example, in the lvl65 dungeon Bartem, I have seen a lot of WHMs do not cast holy at the beginning of a multi-pull and you have to pop mitigation. Then they start casting. I couldn't blame them for that since if you do a multi-pull in that dungeon, your hp will just be on a roller-coaster even though you use your mitigation well. Anyway, this is a great advanced guide for different tanks

    Standard or Legacy controls does not impact how well backwards overpower works.
    Standard just requires you to move your camera a teensy bit at the same time you overpower, a small amount that doesn't actually visibly rotate the camera is enough, so you keep running straight.

    Overhealing does NOT generate more enmity than effective healing, this is complete misinformation.
    The reason as to why HoT effects are avoided between pulls is that if the HoT ticks before the Tank has aggro on the enemies, the enemies will divert attention to the Healer, which can change their pathing. The Tank is usually expecting them to go right to them, so this can make them miss an enemy or two with their AoE.
    If you want to use HoTs between pulls this is fine (though usually unnecessary), just be sure to shadow the Tank - it doesn't matter if they run to you if running to you puts them on the same trajectory as if they were running to the Tank.

    • @fairlyenjoyable
      @fairlyenjoyable 3 года назад

      Yeah, someone else commented about it. The mechanic was changed in a patch a while back, so this vid is a tad outdated in that regard.

    • @Carwinley
      @Carwinley 3 года назад

      @@fairlyenjoyable It was not changed. Healing in excess of a person's health has always simply generated enmity based on the amount of healing the skill would do if it were all applied (IE if you healed for 10,000 HP, without any other effects, it has always been the case that you would generate 5,000 points of enmity).
      The only meaningful change to healing enmity is that White Mage and Astrologian nowadays have a 0.7x multiplier on all of their direct healing (Cure II, the immediate 200-potency heal of Medica II, Tetragrammaton, etc.), while Scholar's healing and all HoT effects do not receive this modifier. This means that for the applicable skills, the enmity generated is only 35% of the total potential healing instead of the 50% generated by HoT effects and all of Scholar's heals; in other words, if a White Mage cast a direct healing spell for 10,000 healing, they would generate only 3,500 enmity after accounting for their passive 0.7x multiplier to enmity generated through direct healing.
      The reason that applying HoTs pre-pull is poor form is and always has been primarily that it can generate enmity in the window before the Tank has generated any enmity, nothing to do with the *amount* generated.
      Even back when Tanks' potencies weren't anywhere near as inflated as they now are, and their Tank Stance both reduced their damage and had a much smaller enmity multiplier (about 2.7x to today's 10x), and Provoke had a much longer CD and only out you at +1 above the current target rather than +1-and-then-a-giant-chunk, and WHM/AST didn't have the aforementioned passive enmity reduction on some of their skills, it was a cakewalk to out-aggro whatever enmity was generated by healing, the only problem was that if an add spawned far away and lots of healing went out, it might take more than 1 hit to put yourself on top.

    I'm still a tank in progress, but I find that the number one thing is to know the bosses' mechanics front-to-back. Which is... difficult if it's your first time in a dungeon. Watch extremely detailed videos for each one, as annoying as that is. This isn't so important in regular dungeons, but I recently did my first extreme and realized that you CANNOT get away with anything. You have to be positioned correctly at all times, pop your cooldowns at the correct times, even be generally responsible for marking for other players.

    These are good tips. My current main has been Dancer, which is a great DPS class. Since Dancer is basically the most mobile job in the game, I can run around the field without really thinking about boss positioning, focusing mostly on avoiding AOE hits and attacking at range. But recently I have started the process of leveling tank jobs and I'm sure I could use some improvement on that front. Now all my tank jobs are level 50, and that's the level where tanking starts to get serious.

    About the regen I knew this (WHM POW) so usually only use Divine Benison barrier on tank as he pulls packs. Barrier doesn't seem to interact with enmity much. This also opens me to the question: Does GNB precasting Aurora would help them get aggro?

    WAR is my tank of choice and I do use backwards overpower but I don't use provoke like you described, I actually do a early single target rotation to get up storms eye and if any aggro drops in that short window I'll use provoke, having that infinitely chaining 10% dmg boost is a big deal imo and I'm kinda shocked you don't do it. I'm hoping WARs new skill is an AoE oGCD version of upheaval that would make this even easier.

    Overhealing generates more aggro than regular healing? /Doubt
    The real reason that you don't want a Regen is that linked mob packs will only give you a very small amount of aggro, probably 1, if the l they noticed you through the aggro link, and healing gives the healer aggro proportional to the amount healed, which is basically always going to be more than 1.
    Even if overhealing does generate more aggro, the result will still be the same if the tank isn't full health during the pull.

    • @PowerfulSkeleton
      @PowerfulSkeleton 3 года назад +2

      The over healing aggro is an old mechanic that was removed along with the tanking simplification of 5.0, I believe. Nonetheless, healing does still generate aggro, and a ticking HoT can still slip mobs onto a healer.

    I found a better way to pull away from healers regen, heal tick etc while pulling. (For me personally since im on ps4 and hud cycling to get to tick off regen is a hassle.)
    As long as enemy is on the aggro list and in tankstance, I found healing myself with gnb aurora, or clemency from pld gains eminity. If party member pulls and arent close for aoe. The heals work if you heal them.
    The blackest night or the party defense buff for dark knight as long as you hit party member will get aggro. Nascent flash or party buff for war works. As long as you follow up with aoes of course. Less hassle for me personally then having to trying to chase them down.
    Tldr: clemency,aurora,blackest night, nascent flash, party defense buffs can nab trash mobs if applied to the right person if they have mob aggro while pulling packs in dungeons.

      Provoke has a longer range (25y) compared to the ranged attacks (warrior's tomahawk has 15y) and using your ranged attack will cause all of your main attacks to go on cooldown, while Provoke will only make itself go on cooldown, so Provoke is useful for pulling a stray mob and then immediately being able to use your attacking moves

    Thanks for teaching people how to up their game, I've been using things like provoke or abyssal drain for years to get difficult packs without ever having to stop running.
    :3
    I think its always a good idea to keep moving until you are done pulling. For dps stop and go tanks are really annoying since they have a tendency to start running again as soon as they enter burst phase.
    The difference between an ok tank and a good tank is details like these, positioning enemies and bosses, making sure the boss doesn't turn too much.
    Another important tip would be, to make sure that the back and rear of the boss are always hittable, when a boss goes to the edge of the arena for a mechanic, he needs to be pulled away or turned asap.

    For Warrior.. you can also pull a group in whichever way, then make use of equilibrium for a big self heal which will generate a lot of aggro for yourself. So like you could say use provoke > equilibrium > backwards overpower.
    Doing it like that.. even if dps attack immediately on the provoke.. they won't take aggro off you due to equilibrium then overpower further solidifying your enmity. It allows you to still keep moving as seen in the backwards overpower example you're just pressing 1 extra button in-between.

    • @StayNightMH
      @StayNightMH 3 года назад

      I'm not keen on wasting an enormous heal just for that, when it's more than enough to just pull aggro normally. I haven't had dps pull aggro from me in the slightest in a very long time and I don't waste my equilibrium for it

    • @Fangrys
      @Fangrys 3 года назад

      @@StayNightMH it was more of a thing prior to the further dumbing down of tanking with shadowbringers. But that why I also mentioned the provoke pulling with trigger happy dps.. also helps when you have that healer who just insists on tossing a regen up right as you're pulling. The equilibrium use just allows you to not worry about the regen on you or the dps attacking before you can even land a single attack. I usually don't have a need for it myself either but it is useful all the same for those who need that extra help with aggro.
