I think the idea that you need to make at least $100,000 a year to live comfortably in NYC is a huge misconception. I’m single, no kids, live alone in a nice apartment in a highly sought after neighborhood and don’t and have never made 6 figures. I would say that I live pretty comfortably. Sounds cliche, but I think it’s truly about living within your means. I think that the single most important factor in living in New York City is choosing a place to live that is affordable. For example, don’t pick the upper east side when you truly have a Woodside, Queens budget ( still a nice neighborhood by the way). I know a lot of people, especially people who come to live here from out of state (not you) who fall into the trap of “I must live in this upper crust neighborhood I can’t afford because people said these neighborhoods are the best or I read about them on a hipster blog somewhere”. There are a lot of great neighborhoods here that are off the beaten path.
Thank you for sharing and lending insight to others that may come across this video ! I agree that is why I captioned that most New Yorkers and others living here do not make this. Definitely should have verbally said that. I also made mention that it depends on how close you want to live to the city and your lifestyle over all. So yes moving and aspiring to those neighborhoods like soho, East village etc will definitely make things harder your not kidding. Lol @ upper east because I can think of 1-2 people who were delusional with housing costs. Everyone has a different definition of “comfortable” and I also should have verbally said that. What I require or you require when it comes to living and activities may look very different. But yes I do feel like housing has and will continue to be the real challenge. Was it always like this before 2020 ? Thank you for mentioning living within your means too. I think it can get tricky for someone moving here wanting to experience all of New York and balancing the expenses that come with New York(or a bigger city) than that of southern states/slower states. Things can add up. And that was mostly one of my points, the more you make the better it is for you. Or be willing to adjust a little depending on where you are moving from.
Stop giving people the idea that someone like you that is LUCK can afford to live comfortably there. Which transplant with little to no prior knowledge of my wants the stress of being a single parents with no benefits or rent stabilization wants to live in NYC? Don’t even get us started on where our tax money goes. The reason people live there is to be in close proximity to the city and telling people to move to the outer boroughs makes it worse for the natives there. Stop blowing up the spot if it’s so good
If you don't mind me asking, what's your favorite out of the other cities you've lived in and why? I'm just waiting for my last to grauate high school next year and I'm trying to find other cities to move to and it is stressful as someone who doesn't travel much 🙁
@@grammygram7551 I absolutely don’t mind. I currently live in atl it’s deff growing on me. My fav state has been Fl so far but atl is deff becoming my fav. It depends on what you’re looking for. Raleigh Nc is also a great place to live if you want to settle down. Fl to retire and Atlanta to network
Thanks for watching and congrats on your move ! 🎉 That’s a bit outside of Manhattan, so you might not be in all the craziness unless you’re commuting for work or planning on visiting often.
Lots of good advice in here but I need to counter point one small thing: The L train literally runs every 3-5 minutes on weekdays and is one of the most reliable lines in the city! It is a mess when it's delayed because there aren't many alternative routes back to BK from Manhattan but I personally this experience only a few times year and I ride the L almost everyday.
You know what your right. Now that I live in Manhattan, and have experienced other lines, the few delays I did experience were nothing! Also it is normal for train maintenance to happen periodically which will reroute you. I think the combinations happening in a short period of time threw me off. But thanks for weighing in.
I love the Hudson ! It’s super close to where you will be able to visit family and friends but it will be a different experience for sure. You’ll be in the city !
Thanks for adding. I can see that, especially if your someone wanting to live directly in the heart of the city and someone wanting to have the flexibility to experience eating out or going to events often. Also if you don’t want roommates or have other expenses (like a car etc), the more you make the easier it will be for you. But it all comes down to lifestyle and personal choices. You can maneuver, budget and still have a good time here but it all depends.
Most people don't make a lot of money in New York city. If people are looking for quality apartments, the Realtors and the landlords won't let them in unless they make 40 times the rent. Even if those people are willing to pay.
Hey i have been thinking of moving to a new state im 21 im undocumented i was brought to this country at the age of 1 and due to a toxic family situation i want to leave to a new state. I just wanted to ask what i should do i currently work as a mower at a landscaping company and im worried that if i move i wouldn’t be able to find a job and a place to live because i would need to get a new state id and register my car. And some places require a living adress to get hired.

How about around 50K annual gross income, single no kids, can I find a decent place with no roommates in nyc or should I wait until I earn more?

You nailed it! These videos are always young kids living in trendy areas that have to do all the Instagram things.

Thanks for watching and congrats on your move ! 🎉 That’s a bit outside of Manhattan, so you might not be in all the craziness unless you’re commuting for work or planning on visiting often.
You really need to be careful with your money, waiting in line is a waste of time.

Except for April, May & September it's too cold or too humid 🤣
😂 Yep. I plan on taking advantage of May.
April is very chilly and rainy in NY. May is as good as it gets.
