This is a tutorial detailing a method for creating a motion blur effect in stop motion. While it can be applied to any method for grabbing frames, such as iStopMotion, Dragon, or a digital camera. It calls for editing or compositing software as well, but there are many that can used to accomplish the effect. - Кино
Magnets! I've never tried it myself, but the idea is to have metal feet and very strong magnates under the floor. Very popular method in England. Stop Motion Store sells them.
It's a clip from my entry in the 11-Second Club. That month the clip of dialogue supplied was from a film from India. It was an engaging challenge to animate in a language I didn't know.
YOURE A GENIUS! I THOUGHT IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE!! Yay!
Just to clarify terms, frames per second (FPS) has more to do with playback speed. Film runs at 24 fps, video at 30 fps. Video files and be set for just about any fps. I like to shoot in 1's, which is one move per frame, playing back 24 fps. Shooting in 2's is good for slower movement, so there are 12 moves per second when playing back 24 fps.
Wow...very impressive...just by searching for *Ui Motion Blur* that i saw in a game as a setting brought me here...
Fantastic video! Really glad that you cover the 3 most popular stop motion softwares
Awesome vids! Working on my first stop motion project and your tutorials have been a huge benefit. Thanks again.
Excellent. Love it.
Incredible work! Impressed!
This videos is very very useful, thanks a lot Michael!
great tutorial. i've nver considered trying to do motion blur in my animations. i somewhat like stop motion better without it, makes it feel a lot more stylized
Your welcome. Glad to hear the videos are helpful.
@WesleyHarper101 The two main guys have ball-and-socket armatures. The violinists (actually the same body shot three times with a different head) is wire-based, using aluminum armature wire.
That will work if the whole object is to blur and you can keep your hand out of the shot, and your camera or software can do a timed exposure (like Stop Motion Pro), but that won't work if you want to blur just part of a character, like the arm. That's the point of this technique.
Indeed Stop Motion Pro has a motion blur feature, but the object has to be moving during the exposure, so it just works when the whole object needs to be blurred. I haven't tried the latest version of Stop Motion Pro, but I have latched onto Dragon.
Blending adjacent frames can also be done in Final Cut and After Effects. I don't like the effect, though, because if, for example, a hand is moving so fast that the blended hands don't overlap, it's not really much of a blurring effect. This method allows the animator to control the extent of the blur.
I like your stuff, man. Well done on 11 seconds club.
Also, thanks for this. It's a genuinely good tutorial - and in my experience that's a hard find when it comes to motion blur.
learned a big lesson today. I had no idea i could make a motion blur in stop motion animation.
I sculpt clay over the dowel, either soft clay if I want to animate full facial expressions, or sculpy that I then bake if I want a hard head that won't change during animaton.
Stop Motion Pro uses a timed exposure method, giving a blur to whatever is moving during the exposure. So it wouldn't work for giving only part of a character the blurred effect.
I haven't tried any of the motion blur programs or plugins. I just use Photoshop or Final Cut to overlap the frames.
wow! That was really helpful! I was trying to find a way to that acculy! Thanks :)
thanks for react on my question about the clay.
The clay is really nice!
Super tutorial👍 really nice work 💛
Perfect, you are great
@MrMovieSound Not sure what you mean by desk top, but Stop Motion Pro works on a Windows laptop or desktop PC. Dragon is made for Mac and Windows. iStopMotion for just Mac. I use Van Aken Plastalina modeling clay. Claytoon works, too.
I have to say... Its frikkin brilliant... :D
amazing
very cool, thank you.
Thank you too!
Cool!
Thank you for clearing that up for me :)
I am a beginner so your videos help me
Cool 😎
This helped me in stick nodes
14" tall, but that is a lot taller than a stop motion puppet normally needs to be. He used an armature that was originally made for The Man in the Yellow Hat, who had to be tall next to the Curious George puppet. Eight inches tall is a better height.
Thank you...
Would love if u did an explanation of how original Dragonball z fight scenes are created. The fast pace action and how blur is incorporated into the scenes to make it dynamic and simple
Amazing video, I just started playing with a stop motion app not nearly as professional software that your using. LoL
Sure looks like a good program. If you can, though, try to use a camcorder with manual focus and white balance. The included camera is automatic, which an cause flickering if the setting changes from frame to frame.
120 very Useful
@trying2bfunny thanks this helps very much.. along with all your videos actually
The digital version of Go-motion
First of all, thank you so much for this tutorial! Very helpful. :) Secondly, I was wondering if you export/compress to RUclips from Final Cut Pro. If so, what export settings do you use? Whenever I upload my animations to RUclips, they always seem to loose quality (both video quality, and animation smooth-ness). Please let me know. :) Thank you!
Exporting from Final Cut Pro, I choose mp4, starting with the Broadband-high settings. In options I switch it to current size and a data rate of 3000, key frame automatic. These settings reduce the file size without cutting into the quality.
@fjonatan2 This guy has a ball-and-socket armature, which I don't know how to make. It was left over from a show I worked on. So the best I can do is recommend buying a kit. I'll see about making a tutorial on making a wire armature, and then how to build up the body and head.
I remember in 1 of your vids you used a wooden dowel for the armature that u were building, but how do u make the clay shape?
Van Atken modeling clay. Can get it at arts and craft stores.
Sorry if you answered this already, what frame rate do you make this in. ( 15fps exported as 24/30? ) or 12 fps?
I would like to ask you something:
Do you know a way to let your puppet stand without drill a hole in my table or something like that because i am going to make a set and cant just drill a hole in it (you are also going to see the ground of the set).
Thanks!
I start with 50%, then adjust to what looks best.
You're very good at this. What program did you use? I was watching that the program lets you see the picture above as a reference for the next one and that's great.
I used three stop motion programs in this tutorial. The first one is Stop Motion Pro, then iStopmotion, and finally DragonFrame. The editing demo was done in Final Cut Pro 7.
Thanks for answering, two last questions, are those programs compatible with mac? and each program was chosen for different stages of postproduction for something in specific or with only one program of those can achieve a good result? Sorry for my English if you do not understand lol, Thank you.
Dragonframe is made for both Mac and Windows, Stop Motion Pro is just Windows, and iStopMotion is just Mac. I don't remember choosing the programs for different results, I just wanted to show a variety of programs in action.
does stop motion pro work for desk top??ive been looking for a good program for a year now and dont know what to get..also what kind of clay do you use for the eye lashes/ everything
Do you have a go to motion blur program for post work? I use real smart motion blur but find it can finicky and can add frames and cause the animation to be jittery.
Do you prefer Stop Motion Pro to Dragon? (Sorry if you have some sort of allegiance to them in some way) It does seem much easier to do motion blur but so many people are big on Dragon these days.
I'm talking about the heads! Sorry, I forgot to mension.
Are you sure 50% is the best opacity to equaly avarege 3 frames? When I do that I usually set the top most one to 33%, and the middle one to 66%, but I wasn't realy ever sure if that was completely mathematically correct, but I always thought it got close enough.
Can you please tell me wich clay you use because I want to make such of puppet to.
Thanks!
Using Stop motion pro is it possible to use motion blur on only parts of the object?
This is all good and all, but how the hell did they do motion blur before computers? For example in the Wallace and Gromit short "A Close Shave" during the chase scene, how did they make the background motion blur as well as other things?
That was done by moving the set while the frame was being exposed. It's a variation of go-motion (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go_motion)
Michael, can i do this tricks on sony movie studio 11?
how do you get them to stand up straight without falling over?
Tie-downs! Check out my tutorial on armature-making.
The union skin makes it look kind of like a motion blur
The last dialogue is from an Indian film “Dewar”😁
make a video tutorial about how make a pupet for stop motion please
do u mind making a tutorial on how 2 make the guy in this tutorial
Hello, could you make a tutorial to explain how you do with Final Cut to make a stop motion please ? I don't understand what you do with the 3 images by 3 images ( 03:49 )
Merci Beaucoup
Is it possible to use GIMP 2.8.2 in this situation?
Could you tell me what are the differences between iStopMotion and a regular video editor? I'm starting to learn how to produce this kind of video and I use Adobe Premiere. Can I use any editor and get the same result?
iStopmotion isn't an editor, it's a tool for capturing the individual frames using features like onion skinning and flipping. Visit their website to see what the app can do.
Try aluminium wire for the armature. I have a video uploaded on how I made my stop motion gorilla puppet.
Van Aken Plastalina Modeling Clay.
Which software do you think is the easiest, and most effective, for motion blur?
For this trick I like to use Final Cut Pro or Premiere because you can easily stack the frames on two additional tracks. If you use After Effects, there is an easy plugin called ReelSmart Motion Blur.
I mean between dragon and Stopmotion pro. (I don't have a Mac, so don't worry about factoring in istopmotion)
whats the skeleton made out of?
Excuse me Mr. Parks, but, what frame rate do you usually film at? Or what would you prefer for beginners to stop-motion?
I like to shoot in 1's (one frame per move), running at 24 frames per second. 2's look good, too (two frames per move), and is a good place to start for beginners, and many experienced animators prefer as well. Shooting in 3's or more looks chattery and is best avoided.
Michael Parks Alright, thank you! Much appreciated advice.
what is material of this dollS?
Can anybody tell why no director had the idea of using CGI only for adding motion blur on stop motion models? It looks so realistic...
hahahhaha the beginning dialogues, how come it is here hahahhah
How did you make this puppet/character
The human puppet in this tutorial has a ball-and-socket armature with cotton batting built up to form the body and dressed in doll clothes. The head is Van Atken clay. More about puppet making in my other tutorials.
@trying2bfunny thanks, I used just clay,....it was a nightmare xD
Does this work on normal Windows Live Movie Maker?
+MarKreations Studios Sorry, I don''t use Windows so I can't test that. Anybody else?
Michael Parks Does it work on just plain Movie Maker?
Michael,
If you happen to have access to Adobe After Effects, or any other video software that implements a motion vector based frame interpolation algorithm, you may achieve better results in certain scenarios with less effort. This is more advanced than simple frame blending. If you use it *on top* of capturing additional in-between frames, the results will be even better. I can get into the specifics if this interests you.
Arthur Hakhverdian I would like to know the specifics you are talking about, preferably for premier or after effects.
@MrMovieSound eyelids*
Toys r Us. Sometimes ebay. Basically doll clothes.
Do you get same effect if using ReelSmart Motion Blur?
I haven't used an After Effects motion blur plugin for stop motion, but I have used it for CG and got a good effect when used in moderation (.5 frame blur). I've seen it cranked up so high that it distracts and looks bizarre. It's the sort of thing that can enhance animation without calling attention to itself.
Michael Parks I just download demo version. RSMB itself looks ugly on stop motion. When combine with Frame Accumulation their Smoothkit it looks pretty good but the timing is way off . Still, your 3 small moves stacking is still the best.
Michael Parks im not using in mac i using in windows 8
There's gotta be a plug in or something that does this easier.
There is ReelSmart Motion Blur for After Effects, but this trick is for those you don't have After Effects and/or the budget for plugins.
What app did you use
I captured frames using Stop Motion Pro. I did the overlapping motion blur effect in Final Cut Pro 7, which has pretty much gone the way of the dodo. I made this six years ago, which these days is long enough for all the software demo to be out of date, but the method would work using Dragonframe or anything that captures frames, and an editing program like Premiere Pro, After Effects, or something that works in layers.
Ok
What software is that ?
I used three stop motion programs in this tutorial. The first one is Stop Motion Pro, then iStopmotion, and finally DragonFrame. The editing demo was done in Final Cut Pro 7.
Okey, Thanks
how tall is the character that slaps him self in the face
Can you please tell Why the guy speaks in Hindi?? I am just curious... :D ( the guys scolding the child in the stopmotion.?? Thanks! Please reply
With my stopmotion I use my iPad
Y not just shake the object to make it look blurry
