Have you ever made a homemade pumpkin roll before? Did you enjoy these tips? Let me know what other baking or cooking videos/recipes you'd like to see!
Made your pumpkin roll tonight for my daughters bake sale. I didn’t get to try it but I trimmed the edges to look cleaner and my girls gobbled it up and loved it! I will have to make another. 😊
We watched your video tonight. My wife has made several hundred of these over the years going back to the mid 80’s. She said she won’t be letting them cool for three hours any longer. Lol So thank you for that time saving tip! Something she began doing the last few years was to use parchment instead of the lint free towels. Much less laundry when making a lot of them and she said it works fine. Actually she said it was a game changer. The only difference she noted in the recipe is that the one she has used has lemon juice in it. Enjoying your channel!!!!!!
I have made this several times over the last few years. I use less sugar in the dough and the filling, more pumpkin, clove and cardamom seasoning also. They are a big success. Getting ready to make some in the next few days. Thank you for your great videos.
I have never used tea towels for this. I use the same parchment paper that I bake the cake in, roll it up, wait til warm, add the filling then roll them back. No mess, and the roll comes out perfect!
My first pumpkin roll and it turned out perfect! I had to buy a pan, avocado spray and a tea towel, but I am ready to make more rolls and give them away during the holidays. Thank you!!!
I was just getting ready to make the annual pumpkin roll when this video popped up. Although I’ve made pumpkin roll for years I never was taught the helpful techniques that you show in this video. Thanks so much for showing us. Looking forward to an even better pumpkin roll experience!😊
I started making pumpkin pie using gram cracker pie crust a few years ago and the wife likes it that way so much she insists on it made that way every time. I also omitted the evaporated milk in the recipe. 👍
Many years ago I came across pumpkin roll and I now get it every chance I get until now I saw your video now I'll make it myself instead of buying it thank you for the video
When I lived in Quebec, a French speaking province, I was taught to make their Christmas log / loaf and they beat their eggs for 5 min. I was told the importance of that step, but forget what it was. Your loaf is a must try for me to bring to our Thanksgiving festival.
Same recipe my sister gave me 40 years ago. I enjoyed your video. It’s been a while since I made a pumpkin roll and this video certainly provides encouragement to get it done. Thank you
I can't wait to try making this . it looks so good. so wonderful that you have so many family recipes that have been passed down. thank you for sharing with us.
I use a silicone mat from Tupperware,it’s fantastic. No sticking what’s so ever. But I have never used fresh pumpkin. That I will try. Thanks for a great video.
I have "The Made From Scratch Life" and "Hand Made" and I love them both. A tutorial just puts them over the top. Thank you. I've always felt intimidated by a pumpkin roll- just watching makes it look easier. Gonna try it. Blessings to you.
I love the recipe and for Years I did messy powder sugar on a towel etc. Thank God for Parchment Paper! My church family & home family Love this! So really easy just need patience!
I haven't made a pumpkin roll in forever. Made me want to go do it now. My youth group..oh so many years ago... made 50 of them to raise money once.. So we got to be great at rolling them lol ...good times.
My daughter's basketball team is doing them for a fundraiser this week, I've got just a few more to go. What wonderful memories and I hope you make one this year!
Yes….I agree. Freezing them is so much better. It takes like ice-cream. I also have made smaller rolls by cutting the cake in half and dampening the tea towel to make it less sticky. Deliciousness!!!
I just picked up hazelnut oil and pastatio nut oil. Clearance, not rancid,, I checked at the store after I paid for them. They were marked to 375, and 4 dollars, 75%off. Did not know what I was going to do with these lovely little bottles, besides salad dressing with raspberry and orange balsamic.. ( which I've had already this week, OOOOH! DELICIOUS!. BUT I OPENED the bottles so I have to use them consistently. Oiling the parchment paper,, and have it's essence absorb in the product. I'm going to do pastatio scones and biscotti. And then hazel nut. We are doing Thanksgiving Saturday.. so I'm going to do these tonite.. can't wait! Ooh! Just thought of this too. I also got bread on clearance at bakery, brioche and Italian round. I'm going to put them in the oven, ( pieces), and do a sweet oil dip. Cinnamon, vanilla, clove, nutmeg in warmed oil to dip the heated bread. Crisp outside soft inside.. I get the reduced breads to use for stuffings, French toast, bread puddings. Usually a buck or so. But now, the clearance breads are like 4 bucks! I checked the shelf price, it was about 25 cents difference.. so not worth it over home bread.. what's up with that! My favorite store bread,, Prison Bread, lol has not gone up, it's still 5 bucks, as is pigs fly bread. These I'll usually get to bring pot luck , with cream cheese , hot pepper jelly, peach or cherry preserve, chocolate and original hummus. Some fruits. Toast lightly the bread after I cut it into finger slices .. comes to about 12 bucks and feeds 8, appetizers.. the prison bread is a great consistency for this, with all it's ancient seeds.. ( if ya don't have diverticulitis)
Hi @Scott Borders glad you enjoyed the video and they are REALLY good, let me know if you make one how you like it. Have you had a pumpkin roll before?
Just tried this awesome recipe and wow!!! So quick and easy to mame. We grew pumpkins for the first time this year. Will need to make a couple more for Thanksgiving. Thank you so much for sharing. Love your channel!
I’ve made this for years. I do use pumpkin pie mix the large can makes five. They taste great. Also use granulated sugar to roll it up. And as you said freezing works great it thaws quickly also.
I made homemade puree and pumpkin roll. It did crack. I may have let it cool too long. But, it also seemed very thin. I'll try again. Any suggestions welcomed. Thanks.
I grew sweet pumpkin pie pumpkins for the first time this year. I got nine pumpkins, oh my heavens, everything I used them in was fabulous. The worst thing is, now I have to wait 11 months for more pumpkins. Yes I saved a whole bunch of seeds. Problem, will I have room to grow anything else next year.
HI Melissa, I have just rolled up the cake part, and it's cooling. I'm about to do the filling. I'm doing it the other direction like your friend suggested, simply because I'll need 10 slices! Question: if I freeze it, how long do you wait to thaw it? Or *do* you thaw it? I'm wondering if it would be less messy to slice it when it's still frozen, plate it, and then serve it, either frozen or not, depending on your response. Thanks so much for this recipe. It smells fantastic. I am using my Oregon Sweet Meat pumpkin, which has the BEST flavor, so this is gilding the lily for sure!
Freezing overnight is fine, either thaw in the fridge for 8 hours or so or on the counter for an hour or so before serving. As long as it's chilled its very easy to slice and serve.
@@MelissaKNorris OMG thanks for replying! I'm sure you're at least as busy as I am, I totally appreciate it! I ate a slice off the end before I put it in the freezer - so good!! And right now, easier than pie!
@@MelissaKNorris My experience is to cut the frozen roll without thawing to get very clean slices with no crumbs. It takes a bit of work with a serrated knife but I now use a double-handled pizza cutter. We make a few hundred pumpkin rolls each year at our church bakery for fund raising at farmer's markets and craft fairs, at this time of year. We triple the recipe and bake in commercial pans. So our pumpkin log is 24" long. After freezing we cut the 2 ends off making single servings and cut the remainder into 3 pumpkin rolls.
I have grown several different types of pie pumpkins and winter squash over the years, and honestly- I think our butternut squash is the sweetest of them all. So i have quit growing eating pumpkins all together and now only use butternut when I want sweet. Great recipe- btw- you look so lovely and well put together in this video.
@Gratitude Ranch a lot of people love butternut and use it in place of pumpkin. Thanks for your kind words and let me know how you like the recipe if you try it!
Hi Melissa! I’m trying this recipe for the first time and I just noticed that in your book it says 1/3 c pumpkin but on your video it says 2/3 c pumpkin. I used your book recipe before I realized the difference. Is there a preference or just whichever measurement suits your fancy? Have you noticed one measurement lends itself to a better cake? Thank you!
wow! That looks yummy, and dare I say, easy??? Can I also substitute the pumpkin with sweet potato? Thanks for all your videos and tutorials. Happy Thanksgiving!
It's much easier than people think, especially with the little tricks. I think sweet potato would work but haven't ever tested it. Let me know if you try it how it goes
I have made pumpkin rolls for many years and it’s so frustrating that it almost always cracks😩. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I literally just followed your video step by step and still it cracked. Am I rolling it to tight?
Thanks for video to supplement book! I was in too far when I realized jelly roll pan😳 somehow I measured out parchment paper used a cookie sheet .. not too bad🤷🏻♀️
Eggs is a leavener that yo want light and airy to make the cake airy, soft, pillowy, and help rise, in addition to the baking powder, and baking soda. l
@cybillmorgan1379 you do know not every stick of butter is the same depending on the brand right? I use a brand that one stick is 8 ounces, so therefore half of it is a 1/2 cup. I provide the written recipe with measurements
Hey Ladies. My mom taught me how to make these when I was growing up we gave them away at Christmas to people we really love bc they are labor intensive 🤪 however we top them with walnuts or pecans before we back it and that helps not to stick to the powdered sugar towel. But it’s a messy towel. I take it out side and shake then wash in dish washer. Thanks for the freezer tip and the parchment paper tip. Can’t wait to try it. Love the channel Melissa and I also have both your books. ❤️ thanks for sharing

Yes that's the way I learned to make it also
This is how I do it too.
One Grandma used towel method and the other one used parchment paper.
Exactly
I learned that using the towel helps the steam escape, which can’t with parchment (and can cause dampness/too much moisture
@@spiritdeer4687 I've done both ways and cannot tell a difference. The ease of parchment is my choice.

Because you roll it when still warm you have to wait till is totally cold
