  • Take everything you love about the 500 hatchback and add more space, a nicer cabin, available AWD, and a higher seating position and what you have is essentially the perfect vehicle for the SUV hungry US market. Buyers wanting a small SUV with an Italian name should look no further, but remember that some more mainstream players offer better refinement and practically, while also being less fun.

    I have a 2018 500X Lounge - have 44,000 with nothing but tune ups - and basic maintenance - finally considering some new tires. Really love the car. - Wish I had the AWD but I don't - I can live with the FWD and the Chrysler made Trans - works fine for me. I frequent several outdoor gun ranges which are all combinations of gravel - dirt - grass you name it... Works just fine.

    I owned a Juke for 4 years and I hated the turbo lag on takeoff. Just got the 2016 500x Trekking and I like the takeoff a lot more. Haven't had to really nail it to get around traffic yet. I will say it is a lot more enjoyable to drive with the seats that don't hold you in, the less noise in the cabin and the suspension isn't as stiff.

    I've had my 500x for exactly a year now, and I love it. But I would not get anything above the Pop trim. The turbo engine with the six-speed is just amazing compared to the horrible automatic that is also in the Jeep. If you're worried about snow, then just get snow tires- they work better than all-wheel drive anyway.
    Regarding reliability: all I can say is my experience has been very good. I put 80,000 miles on the smaller '12 500 in 5 years and only had minor problems that were my own fault. The 500x over the past year has had no problems at all.

    Besides the clearly erroneous details in the review (see comments below for examples, one that stood out was the comment that Fiat 500 car doesn't have back seat--it absolutely does), I think the review was great visually--but it was misleading and clearly, he has a bias (comments like "the clearly cheap start-stop button--who says that it is a button!) if not is misinformed on some more technical details about the Fiat 500x specifically. I encourage prospective buyers to test it out and or watch other reviews. At times I was not sure what he was reviewing it for, the typical American road and use or a European raceway. This is a very fun car and be prepared to have people say "wow" when they enter or see you driving by.

    I really don't understand why everybody in the US prefers the slower 2.4 n/a engine.
    The 1.4 turbo is a lot more lively either with manual or auto transmission (a DCT in fact).
    It has more torque and of course a lot sooner due to the turbo, making it a lot more fun and easy going than that 2.4.
    The 1.4 has also better mileage if you don't keep pushing it too hard..
    You even call the 2.4 the "beefier" engine, although it only offers more power than the 1.4 above 5500 rpms or so.
    On normal driving conditions (let's say between 1300 rpm and 4000 rpm, the 1.4 offers always more power for less fuel.
    I just don't get the US market.

    • @weshasarrived2560
      @weshasarrived2560 6 лет назад +2

      sadly, the 1.4t is only available with FWD, and the manual transmission, in the base model of this car, in the US anyways.

    Drove the 500X as a rental the other day from Stuttgart to Munich.
    It had the 1.4 Turbo and the Manual. I bet you the turbo engine is the better pick !
    More midrange torque to cruise this thing: 230 for the 1.4 vs 175 from the 2.4 (it's not sporty no matter how much displacement you put in there). Also the engine was very quiet and refined. This 2.4 engine sounds like someones grinding next to your ear. I dont know if they dont offer that in the US but regarding to a test of the german adac you can get the 1.4 with a dual clutch transmission. The manual had a launch assist for the clutch so you almost can't choke it. Was a funny car but not my kind of taste.

      Nash Gover well, it’s got fiat engine so they will be very unreliable. Actually Jeep Renegade used Fiat 500X body and give them a different look. Notice the Chime are also similar too.
      If you want a real jeep then get a wrangler for a cute size and Grand Cherokee for Full-Size beast! These two are probably more reliable than Renegade because they used more Chrysler part than fiat.
      I prefer the old XJ Cherokee with AMC 4.0 V6 I don’t care about V8 that’s much.

    Great review, Sofyan! The Fiat 500x sure seems like a neat little vehicle, but I do have admit that engine sounded like it wanted you to stop driving it. The 500x's engine just seems to noisy and intrudes into the cabin quite a bit.
    Putting that all to the side though, the interior of the 500x looks fairly attractive. I like their use of more exotic looking materials, as oppose to the competitions black plastic norm (with a few vehicle exceptions). Also, while the exterior styling is definitely subjective, it has some pretty nice proportions, and is easily recognizable as a Fiat.
    All in all, the Fiat 500x is for the person who wants to stand out from the sea of very similar looking vehicles. Not to mention, this vehicle offering AWD, is definitely going to bring in more buyers from the colder climates, too. Great review! Keep up the great work, Sofyan!

    While I am very supportive of FCA styling, their smaller engines are generally thrashy disappointments. Your comments are exactly what I have felt. Fiat has historically relied on smaller engines that are high revving. This plays well in Europe, but doesn't work in the land of low-end torque and stump-pulling horsepower. If Fiat could learn this, they would be a much stronger player in this market. It merits note that Chrysler historically has always been at the head of the class with horsepower and torque (until the 1980's). However both marques share one thing...disgusting quality. Reliability has always been lacking in Chrysler and Fiat cars. Too bad, because now they have styling that is head of the class.

    • @miks564
      @miks564 7 лет назад +2

      riverexplorer, we only get low end torque with turbos, compressors or electricity. Not with displacement (unless we're talking 4000cc or more).
      Any turbo engine driver will tell you that N/A engines are slow, precisely because they lack low end torque.. I don't understand why the US market is so keen o N/A engines, they need to be bigger, they need more fuel and in the end they offer less power where it counts.
      Also, amongst FCA smaller engines, we find some 'Engine of the Year' models like the 900cc twinair and 1.4 multiair engines, which seems a bit different than your idea of "generally thrashy disappointments"
      And I don't know about Chrysler, but you only hear about Fiat lack of reliability from people that don't own nor drive Fiat cars.

    • @miks564
      @miks564 7 лет назад +2

      Thank you for the attempt to explain. But really bad turbo lag is something from the last century.
      But even with lag, overall they provide a lot better acceleration. It's there, it's measurable, it's easy to experience. The sooner the torque, the sooner the available power.
      What's really the point to complain about turbolag? Isn't that related of how fast it goes when we want? You just have to try one and the other. I really don't understand. It's night and day.
      Maybe I misunderstand you, but injectors don't play any cooler role (not outside competition anyway). Maybe except for US, but manufacturers do compete for mileage for the past 20 years or more.
      One thing is true though. Engines with at least one turbo are more expensive to build, so manufacturers prefer N/A to get better profit margins. Customers only look for the peak power figure like in this very same exercise. Common buyers don't examine torque curves, although they could easily feel the difference if at least they would try them.

    Look you buy a fiat because you enjoy being different not sexy not intimidating just different. You also buy a fiat because you don’t need the car to represent you or your status. Its a means of getting you from here to there and when you are done you can find your car in the sea of Japanese and ford and chevy vehicles which all look alike. You also like to have a good relationship with the local dealer/repair shop because you will spend a lot of time there. I bought a new 1984 fiat spider 2000 and it was showing rust within 8 months i went back to the dealer and they had left the states. The spider 2000 0-60 time should have been listed as why bother the interior was cheap the thing ran ok somethings will break. like i said you will know your repair people. But i would love to have one again. It was fun not because of performance but because of its fun nature. The 500 is the same. its fun,its simple, its simply fun.

      Technically the 2.4 is not a fiat engine really it's a global thing, built in the states I think block was hyundai. Fiats own engines are good. The 1.3 turbo diesel was a great engine the old 1.9 td was unkillable and the 2.0l td is also great, not the best on fuel but a good engine.

    Isn't Fiat's reliability the worst in the business? I feel like you'd have to have a lot of expendable money to decide that this SUV is a smarter decision than most others unfortunately .

      They're no Toyota or Honda but the newer Fiat models are fairly reliable. I think the brand gets a bad rep from its older models from the 70s and 80s that would break down very often .

      The wife and i have been looking for a new driver for her and she loved the look of the fiat but we tested out the hrv also and i will never understand the love it gets after i test drive it.. It was just cheap and gross. Honda is losing it, but they gotta pay for the great reviews because personally i don't see it. And don't get me started on the rav4. Same thing. Sluggish and rough ride. I did not care for it. Toyota is going to be in the same boat with Honda soon.

    The Fiat brand would be great if they would dump the "nostalgic" look and have a new design language, and dump these crappy corporate FCA drivetrains, and use the WAY better Alfa drivetrains. They may be more expensive, but will be much more fun.

    Horrible review. Stop comparing it to the 500. It's a different car. Automotive "journalists" like you were so hard on this because it isn't the typical box you're used to while expecting Ferrari performance. You all want americans to drive perfect boring boxes while all interesting cars die.

      suzigti92 that's a cute and "safe" statement. But, you don't own an Italian car because Consumer Reports or your mommy tell you that it's proper and practical.
      Owning and driving an Italian car comes from passion. You either "get it"... or you opt for what your neighbor (and everyone else on your block) has.
