I think this is the best video for my long time questions about lining up properly. You explained it so methodically and I can't wait till I get to the lanes to practice. Thanks!
This is exactly what my problem was last night. I’m definitely gonna practice this and I think it’s gonna help immensely. Thank you very much. Love the videos
So Jr, tried your tip for tucking my pinky in, and have now gone from shooting nothing but spares to non stop striking thanks for the tips you and your channel are golden!!! This from a 50 year old return bowler!!
THANK YOU! So much I have had many good bowlers try to explain "lining up" to me, so many different answers. You made it make sense to me! I am a rocket scientist (retired now) math angles are my thing and I knew it had to apply here. Your tips increased my score by 26 pins after using it for a month. House scores around 195- 225. was at 176!
This video REALLY helped me improve my game!!! My angle is actually 5, so I call it: ' Rule of 5'. If I want to go play the ball down on the 10 board, I stand on the 15 board, on the approach. Great video JR!!!
JR, you are on the short list of advice channels I recommend to others if I can't explain something right.. you do have a tendency of getting technical which can throw off newer bowlers.. but between your other videos and some other channels it usually gets cleared up and makes sense. Keep up the good work!
Just came across this video. Great information. I have always identified my start point with my feet using the outside of my right foot as a right handed bowler. Turns out that by sheer coincidence this works perfectly for the rule of 7 because if I start on 10 my left foot is sliding about 17. Sometimes our quirks work out! Thanks!
This has been one of the best instructional videos I've seen .. explained so well 👏.. thank you .. I want to explore taking lessons from you .. I'm in howeell .. but I know you are probably extremely busy and in demand .. thnx again sir 😊
You make a killer point about trying to go up the boards. My dad watches me practice up the boards all the time and doesn't understand how I'm able to stand in the left gutter and still get my ball to go up the 5 board. My rule of 7 is a rule of 5, but I line up with my slide foot, so it looks like I'm standing in the gutter. Another point to mention is thinking of a railroad track. If you look down a track, the rails appear to come together in the distance, and due to that, distance perceived is shorter. When people try to hit a mark 40' down a lane, they think the mark is a lot closer, therefore they have to angle it to that mark more than they actually do. Even when sliding on 30, my ball still goes pretty damn straight to hit the 10 board or so down lane, even though it looks like I have to throw it really far out to get it there.
Charlie Odom the reason you use 5 is because of your drift during approach, 2 boards left drift 2+5=7. The reason it is called the rule of 7 is because the distance between the centre line on the ball and the inside of the slide foot is 7 boards. All bowlers have a personal number and can work it out. There is a formula to calculate all shots using this rule.
@@stephenrodwell3164 wrong....I don't drift. The reason has to do with 3 things: The spot I pick on my foot to line up with, how close I release the ball to my ankle, and the angle I am bent over at the foul line. Since I line up with the inside of my foot, and the ball passes within MM of my ankle. It is only 5 boards. The board I line up with on my approach is the exact spot I slide, within MM. The only exception is when I shoot corner pins. I deliberately walk to my target.
Charlie Odom good point. As the ball goes 40 foot it only went right 20 inches. Or not even if sliding on 30 the ball probably laid down on 23-25 on really ball only travels right 15”
Nice explanation. I'll be using this more since I am just getting back to bowling from the pandemic. I've been having having an issue with sailing the ball too far to the right down lane.
Great vid man I’ve been trying to get back into bowling more last time I bowled was 6-7 months ago and before that I don’t know maybe 2010-2012 and I’ve just now started to adjust a lot better where to start and aim and this is actually about what I do but now I can try to adjust better knowing all of this

Such an excellent explanation. Really appreciated!
Thanks soooooo much for doing this video. It will be a game changer for me. I've always drifted right when shooting at 2nd arrow from right and pull it left normally missing my mark. I found last weekend if I want to hit the 2nd arrow from right, I walk down looking at 3rd arrow from right which actually helped me to walk much more straight for once and then at last moment I try to roll over the 2nd arrow. Seemed to help. But this explanation might help me pin point the idea even more. Thank you.
Great video JR. I can’t wait to try it out next practice session. Your videos have helped so much getting my game together and adapting to the new conditions and equipment. You can teach an old dog new tricks it just takes a bit longer.
I have bowled for about 33 yrs and never heard of the rule of 7. I don't think I had the best Jr coaches and I doubt I was humble enough as an adult. This could be the best tip I've ever heard🤔
Great information JR. Seeing what board the ball is rolling on at the break point is difficult for me without a camera to record that board. With a ball speed of 15 mph, the ball is traveling at 22ft/sec and that means when I look up to see the board from my 15' target, the ball is actually hitting the pins. On the other hand, if look at the intended target down lane, I can see that board more accurately as the ball approaches. This knowledge of angles is great. In all my years of bowling, I have never heard anyone address the target set up system as you have. Just an FYI..... lane is 60 feet from foul line to head pin, ball speed is 15 mph, ball time to travel the 60 feet is 2.7 seconds.
Good helpful video. Yes. Some people just so easy to walk straight without drifting. I always drift to the right. I know the drifting messed up my target point Working on it Well explanation on the perception of angle before and at the foul line. … Good stuffs. Thanks
I find this “walk straight” technique is too hard for me. I have more success walking toward the arrow that I aim for. However, your point of figuring out how many boards the ball is from my slide foot makes sense. Thanks!
If you’re only ever going to play right of 2nd arrow that’s fine but if you want to be able to do more on the lanes walking towards your target is very bad
Great video. I will exercise this Sunday. However, I also struggle with how much to open my stance as I open the lane. Perhaps watching the upcoming video will help.
OH My ! This is the best video so far I've seen that finally explain all the line up fundamentals! I'm intermediate players and still do like 2-3 shots in gutter !! every games !! :o :o because I was not able to line up properly, Now I'll do the maths :D thx
Good information JR I have also used visually moving eyes down lane or closer to me if I need to keep my ball from going wide of my desired break point. It works for me once I find the desired project I need.
JR, my question is when you say 15 to 5, how far down the line will the ball hit the 5 board? With the rule of 31, would this be a good target for a pattern length of 36?
Hey JR, Over the couple of month of bowling 🎳 league my teammate informed me to stop bowling my ball short or inside my target being the 2nd arrow. He said to roll it side and trust my ball. I use the second arrow or or 9 or 8 board. When I roll it inside my target spot I see my ball rolling past the head pin left towards the 4 pins take out the 4-7-8. I feel as though I looking at the 2nd arrow and I don’t.
It looks like the feet are pointing straight at the foul line. Should they be pointing to the arrow you target? How would the shoulders and hips line up with the arrow you target? If rolling over the third arrow should we be targeting the 4 or 6 depending on the arm we roll with? Thank you!
JR, good video. Can you do a video on how to get the ball closer to the ankle? When I was in junior league years ago, I hit my ankle pretty badly and been tentative and swinging away from it since then. Instead of 7, Kegel said I was around 10-12 boards so I am losing a lot of leverage. Any tips or drills would be great! I love the videos! Looking forward to the podcast!
Ive watched a few of your videos and really click with your explanations and teachings. I also appreciate the visual aids on the screen while explaining this video. I will be applying what I've learned here tomorrow at the lanes.. Thanks again..
Nice. The only thing I didn’t hear was what reference point on your shoes you use, and from the graphic it looks like you’re using the center of the left shoe. I use the inside edge of my left shoe, as I find that more accurate.
Douglas Wobbema same...use the inside edge of the widest part, near the base of the big toe...allows me to at least start in precisely the same place on the “x axis”, and then I use the “toe edge” for “y axis” alignment. Now, what happens afterwards...well, I’m human!
Al Farrow it doesn’t matter really. If you use inside of slide foot, like I do, then your # will likely be 5 or so (since your reference point is slightly right of where 7 is calculated from). It is the same concept though. You need to determine where you’re sliding to be able to throw straight up 10, 5, wherever. Then you’ll know how far right your lay down is based on your slide - whatever point you use as a reference.
TheVlad1616 Yes, it’s all about a consistent reference point...my “point” was that the edge of the shoe is more accurate than the middle of the front of the shoe.
He says 7 from center of face to shoulder. Your left (or right) toe is not in line with the center of your face. The inside edge of your shoe where the big toe connects to your foot is in line with the center of your face (sternum, body, etc). If you use a different part of your shoe than that, then your number will be less than or greater than the distance from body center to shoulder. Also, some people have very narrow bodies (7).
This rule is the same as the Ritger "personel number" but takes into account the bowlers drift as well. Ritger also included change to the heel angle as well to help with alignment.
So if I am trying to hit 5 down the lane, why go 15-5, which in the exanple would put me at 27, when I could just slide at 12 to hit 5 using the 7 board rule? And if one board left is two boards right, does that mean 1 board right is two boards left?
I wonder if any smart people out there could make an Excel sheet that calculates it automatically. Like where you enter your desired spot at the arrows, breakpoint and your drift (left or right) and it spits out a starting point. For those of us that drift a bit but have to play bigger angles because of our rev rate, it gets tricky. Drifting 4 left with a 500 rev rate when you wanna play 20 to 7 gets tricky for me ha
I did so several years ago. Don't change the darkened cell values as they are calculated based on the non-darkened cell values: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1t14prGE8ynpYyyCujfGC8RNgbUliz9rPSL8IwepPesQ/edit?usp=sharing
Extremely helpful, I had a light bulb moment! Can't wait to go and practice again now. Hey JR, if I win a bowling ball in the Mug Club, can it be shipped Internationally?
JR, when you are talking about standing on a board, which foot, and where at on the foot are you lining up. For example, When I line up I use the outside of my right foot. I take a 5 step approach and I am a right handed bowler.
@@Tenpindoctors So using the "big toe" on your slide foot. I am going to try this out. It will be weird, like I said I have always lined up with the outside of my right foot. I do tend to drift right though. So i normally slide where my right foot was at on the approach!! Thanks for the video!!
I ‘ve never understood how you can stand at say the 22nd board swing the ball straight back and walk to the foul line and release it and hits say the 5th board. When I do it the ball goes straight down the lane to the pins. It follows a path parallel to the sides of the lane. some people have said to square your feet, hips and shoulders to the arrow that is your mark. If you do this, you will walk at an angle to the foul line. When I watch other bowlers, they appear to square up with the foul line but the ball goes toward the gutter and hooks back to the pocket. I’ve always heard “move to the left and aim at the same mark.” I’ve never had anyone explain how to do that. They always say “you just do and it works every time”. It would be nice if you could help me understand. Thanks in advance for you help. Bob
Simple question, how should I measure the board I stand on? I have always put the board I want in the middle of my slide foot. Others tell me to put the inside edge of your slide foot on the board you want. Which is right? This is mostly just a communication problem right? Can you clear it up for me, us?
i have a question, i tend to release the ball a lil above the ankle and i usually dont roll in directly on the lanes, more throwing it (def louder sounds than the pros that seem to roll it) i just started taking bowling very serious and am averaging about 220...What would be effect of rolling ball and releasing at ankle, instead of releasing higher and seeming to "throw"it more..if you go to my page, you will see me bowling..any advice would help..
Jeffrey Pelletier the leading cause of misses inside of target is late timing. When the timing is late the body tries to compensate by pulling down from the top of the swing. Easiest fix, start the ball a second sooner or find a coach familiar with the Mark Baker system of timing to assist in correcting it.
Im currently struggling with head pin spares. I am trying to line up on the left to knock the head into the ten and out of trying to hook past the head pin. Maybe this video is what I need to really think about,or do you have more tips? I always manage to miss left and completely miss the head pin when trying this. Thanks.
with the modern balls it is not necessary to walk the steps, just standing at the fowl line I can strike. why not? put some revs on the ball and just stand at foul line and shoot. how hard is it to roll 12 miles an hour?
For decades I have had a 3 board drift right. I have included it in my approaches. I did read an article that suggested drifters take the first step in front of the left foot for 4 step. It works because I start 3 boards left. What do you think of this?
So if i release my ball at my ankle which is say 3 boards instead of the 7, and i can ride 10 board all the way down does that mean i only need to stand 13 with my slide foot if i understand correctly?
Tony Barber yes, exactly right. To find your number this is exactly what you need to do. Find out what board you slide on to throw it straight up the lane.
Tony Barber under the Ritger training system the distance is calculated to the centre of the ball. If you place the ball on the lane and you slide foot next to it with a small clearance you can count the boards. Other training systems use other systems but coaches trained under Ritger will use this as the basis for calculations. If your release point is wider you can still use that release point to calculate your lines and angles.
Great video! for future videos can you please give information for both lefties and righties? As a lefty im constantly trying visualize what the left side would be like.
So where is the toe of my left foot supposed to point, assuming I’m on 17 throwing to 10? Straight to 17, or pointed slightly right towards 10? Then of course axis tilt comes into play...yes?
What he's saying is that if you want to play straight up 10, you stand on 15-18 (depending on your walk) and walk straight with a straight backswing, and with every board left of 17, hitting the same mark, 10, the ball goes out 2 boards farther. I think I got that correct, but that's the gist of it.
@@Tenpindoctors Can you do a video explaining that? How are you supposed to walk straight but keep your body towards your target if you are throwing to the right? There is something in execution of that which I don't get.
@@Tenpindoctors e.g. if I need to slide towards my target which is say 10 boards to the right of my release point I would need to walk at that same angle towards the foul line wouldn't I?
@@Tenpindoctors You may need a video in regards to that. For instance, if I am targeting 8 at the arrows but playing 5 at the breakpoint do I stand 15 and adjust my feet left until I hit that break point? I am sure many of us would appreciate if you were to delve into this.
when you say 'start on 10', what part of your foot (and which foot) do you use to do that? I'm left handed and have always used the inside of my left foot, lining up the board with the side of my shoe.
I drift 5 boards to the left. So if i understand the video correctly, i have to calculate where i wanna be at the foul line and always start 5 boards further to the right? Is that correct?
Gus K yeah, I know that I drift about 5-7 boards to the left so if I want to go straight up 10 I start with my slide foot on the ten board when I line up. This lets me finish around board 17 at the lone
Mind=blown When you say stand on 17, what part of which foot do you go by? I saw you reply below that you use the toe of your slide foot. So, do you mean the inside edge of your slide foot, or the very tip of the shoe?
munkeynutz13 the inside edge of the slide foot should be on the "joint" between the boards. If you stand on the 20 board and look down you would see the board with the centre dot next to the side of the slide foot.
It could be the center of your shoe or you could use the inside or outside of your shoe is all personal preference. As long as your standing on the board you want you'll get used to your foot placements over time.
munkeynutz13 inside edge where the ball of the foot protrudes out. This is the most accurate, repeatable method. Using the big toe or middle of the shoe will get someone close but not exact.
Bowling beyond the basics has an appendix on the math. For right handed and 3rd arrow he has these boards to put the ball on at the foul line. He says to walk straight but turn your feet and body towards the target. Stand about 6 boards to the left. Not exactly a 3-6-9 system. 19 (10 pin) 17 15 13.5 (1 or 5 pin) 11:5 9.5 8 (7 pin)
This is confusing. I develop muscle memory by throwing a plastic ball on the 5th board with my right foot on the 5th board. I get instant feedback and I can see if I'm throwing straight or crooked if the ball keeps next to the gutter. I do this I throw straight and develop the muscle memory and footwork to walk straight. Now "walk left and throw right" is what really confuses me.
No chance you're hitting 5 if you slide on 5. Its physically impossible. But if you start with your non slide foot on 5 then your slide foot is atleast 7 left so that would be more correct
@@Tenpindoctors If I do my drill where I consistently start with my non-sliding foot on 5 and consistently hit 5, do I still need to worry about where my sliding foot ends up?
That's a great video and advice, but.... I'm right handed and i set up with my right foot, not my left. All of this does not work, it would be good to have the same video or advice that you gave here. Thanks
One thing that's confusing me is that when you say "stand on 17", Your left foot is on it. So you're actually standing centered on 13.5 between both your feet, which is where your head is and which is the point you're using to measure the 7 inches to your shoulder. So shouldn't you stand "centered" on 17?
I think this is the best video for my long time questions about lining up properly. You explained it so methodically and I can't wait till I get to the lanes to practice. Thanks!

If you use a different part of your shoe than that, then your number will be less than or greater than the distance from body center to shoulder.
Also, some people have very narrow bodies (7).
nice video.. on part 2 of this can you go over hand position and how that comes into playing angles correctly? thanks!
I didn’t know about this. I just figured out myself. For me it’s 4
Appreciate this video J.R. 💯🎳
I have a tendency to travel to the left witch is why I am comfortable standing on the left. When I stand to the right I gutter most times
This rule is the same as the Ritger "personel number" but takes into account the bowlers drift as well. Ritger also included change to the heel angle as well to help with alignment.
Great explanation. One question, is there a best way to line up your feet? Center of left shoe, right or left edge of shoe, or something else?
So if I am trying to hit 5 down the lane, why go 15-5, which in the exanple would put me at 27, when I could just slide at 12 to hit 5 using the 7 board rule? And if one board left is two boards right, does that mean 1 board right is two boards left?
What are you thanking about the 17 the 20 when your standing
Omg.. this is Soo helpful JR...!! Thanks..
Awesome content!!
so which vid was the followup vid, showing how to read the lanes front to back easier? for me, it's typically a feel thing.
When you say walk to board 17 for release where is reference point? (ie, left foot, right foot, or mid way between)?
How do you line up. I line up by the left side of my left foot does the same concept apply
Still don’t understand this to the degree that I should. I hope I eventually can figure it out
I wonder if any smart people out there could make an Excel sheet that calculates it automatically.
See if you can find the app: Lane_Play_Alignment by Joe Slowinski. It has just what you described.
The information on the Lane_Play_Calculator is on RUclips at ruclips.net/video/9TGgql5ceIs/видео.html
Thanks!
when you say "stand on 17", what is on 17? inside of slide foot? outside of slide foot?
Inside
skydvr69 I use the toe of my slide foot.
I use the sole side of my slide foot.
The board you stand on
Extremely helpful, I had a light bulb moment! Can't wait to go and practice again now. Hey JR, if I win a bowling ball in the Mug Club, can it be shipped Internationally?
Sure we can work that out. Just may have to help pay for shipping
Is your website not working anymore? Says domain name for sale and not showing the page.
JR, when you are talking about standing on a board, which foot, and where at on the foot are you lining up. For example, When I line up I use the outside of my right foot. I take a 5 step approach and I am a right handed bowler.
Whatever foot you slide with. The toe of that foot
Bob
Great help thanks
Simple question, how should I measure the board I stand on? I have always put the board I want in the middle of my slide foot. Others tell me to put the inside edge of your slide foot on the board you want. Which is right? This is mostly just a communication problem right? Can you clear it up for me, us?
Greg Poll inside edge of the slide foot. For most people this would be where the ball of the foot protrudes out.
Thank you for this info. THANK YOU!
Awesome video!!! Thanks
My problem is my release, getting better at it
Are you still doing the podcasts? If so, under what name? Thanks!
How can I get Strikes and spares the hand rable whether handle comes out and goes back in June a ball my Bowl
I walk way right. I use Pearl's because the shape keeps me out of the gutter. Thanks for the video. I really want and need to fix this.
What is the best way to use the storm x
i have a question, i tend to release the ball a lil above the ankle and i usually dont roll in directly on the lanes, more throwing it (def louder sounds than the pros that seem to roll it) i just started taking bowling very serious and am averaging about 220...What would be effect of rolling ball and releasing at ankle, instead of releasing higher and seeming to "throw"it more..if you go to my page, you will see me bowling..any advice would help..
Thanks JR. Was wondering if you have any tips on why I would keep missing my target left? Any advise helps. Thank you
Jeffrey Pelletier the leading cause of misses inside of target is late timing. When the timing is late the body tries to compensate by pulling down from the top of the swing. Easiest fix, start the ball a second sooner or find a coach familiar with the Mark Baker system of timing to assist in correcting it.
@@williamfreitas7016 thank you for the help
Im currently struggling with head pin spares. I am trying to line up on the left to knock the head into the ten and out of trying to hook past the head pin. Maybe this video is what I need to really think about,or do you have more tips? I always manage to miss left and completely miss the head pin when trying this. Thanks.
Does the rule of 7 play to the dots at 3, 5, 8, 11, 14, or just the arrows only?
What about drift, and personal numbers help.
with the modern balls it is not necessary to walk the steps, just standing at the fowl line I can strike. why not? put some revs on the ball and just stand at foul line and shoot. how hard is it to roll 12 miles an hour?
Such an odd opinion, but I wish you luck with this
For decades I have had a 3 board drift right. I have included it in my approaches. I did read an article that suggested drifters take the first step in front of the left foot for 4 step. It works because I start 3 boards left. What do you think of this?
Chuck Ridgley sounds like a crossover step that all good bowlers use to create a swing slot.
i'm left handed so tryin to figure it out from my perspective. plus i'm trying to learn spot cause i've always bowled at the pins.
If it works, it works. I look at the pins, too. Right side of 6 pin for me. Helps me to project the ball.
I have 5 board drift to right.ok thanks I go practice.
Thanks Again
What happens if I have to change my target at the arrows
I never look at arrows because i throw with feel. Sometimes i try but its very weird and difficult
I look my feet and that the ball goes to breakpoint only
So where is the toe of my left foot supposed to point, assuming I’m on 17 throwing to 10? Straight to 17, or pointed slightly right towards 10? Then of course axis tilt comes into play...yes?
What he's saying is that if you want to play straight up 10, you stand on 15-18 (depending on your walk) and walk straight with a straight backswing, and with every board left of 17, hitting the same mark, 10, the ball goes out 2 boards farther. I think I got that correct, but that's the gist of it.
Upnet at 17 you’re playing straight so your slide foot should be straight.
When you open up the angle of the slide foot is actually minute.
Was that right foot you was lining up with, made sense if so?
james barlow it goes off the slide foot. So left for jr
Thank you for that explanation of the rule of 7 I think it will be very helpful to me as I bowl
So with this do you need to keep your feet parallel at the start? Or does body body tilt come into play?
You should always be facing your target and you should slide towards your target
I teach to use the toe of your slide foot
thanks JR. I've always wondered that.
What foot or toe do most use to line up? Right handed bowler asking
Cody Daniels left foot, inside edge. Most people the ball of the foot protrudes out a little. That edge is used for lining up.
Mind=blown
When you say stand on 17, what part of which foot do you go by?
What is the best way to use the storm x
So what is the math on a 2 and 1? Does moving one left with your eyes at the arrows bring the ball 2 boards in at the break?
Bowling beyond the basics has an appendix on the math. For right handed and 3rd arrow he has these boards to put the ball on at the foul line. He says to walk straight but turn your feet and body towards the target. Stand about 6 boards to the left. Not exactly a 3-6-9 system.
19 (10 pin)
17
15
13.5 (1 or 5 pin)
11:5
9.5
8 (7 pin)
Hi, for one handed is the rule 7 (7 boards). I wondering how much is for two handed players ?
Same rule. Its the width of your shoulder to the center of your body
If you know where the ball is going then you dont have to worry about anything
That's a great video and advice, but.... I'm right handed and i set up with my right foot, not my left. All of this does not work, it would be good to have the same video or advice that you gave here. Thanks
One thing that's confusing me is that when you say "stand on 17", Your left foot is on it. So you're actually standing centered on 13.5 between both your feet, which is where your head is and which is the point you're using to measure the 7 inches to your shoulder. So shouldn't you stand "centered" on 17?
You don’t stand vertical. Your shoulder drops and your head should be just inside your left foot at release
@@Tenpindoctors Aha ok thank you!
JR this was a great video. had no idea this is why I was naturally drifting right
