Finally, a pianist with patience! Clean, crisp and calm - no rushing.
She does play it nicely, but there are several mistakes in there...and towards the end she does rush a little, or sounds like she's trying really hard not to push that tempo. Yet, still much better than I've heard other people play it, so very well done!
The Rob Why thank you! :)
+The Logical ...What?
Truth Proselyte
I agree completely. No weight to the notes, no swing. It was mediocre at best.
she was literally playing this for fun not madison square gardens in a concert or something
The man in the back! He's so precious! His jaw dropped and about five seconds after he realizes what he's doing, he calmly picks up his jaw and enjoys the music.
+da That was me --- most people who come to "sit" in don't even come close to being entertaining pianists
lol this is so true
I think hat guy is actually one of the pianists that works there. As in even pieces like this is easy to him.
At first glance I thought the guy in the background was Elton! LOL!
only after Kristen briefly looked at him, tho 😄
Always good to hear it played at the correct tempo.
I think that's one of the go-to songs when you want to impress so people play it fast.
@@TetFeMal Which is a shame, because I love the inexorable trudge of the stride bass when it's played like this. The piece builds up perfectly at this tempo.
If you can play it slow, you can play it fast
@@hannahmatteson315 Except playing it fast makes it sounds stupid...
@@thomasalias8492 😂 this is a reference to Twoset Violin. It’s meant to be sarcastic.
Thank you everyone for the wonderful comments and motivation to keep getting better!
hells bells, Kristen , I bet Joplin himself would be impressed !!!
Kristen! What a throwback! So much happens in 6 years! Maybe we can meet someday at Disneyland after it reopens! Love ya girl, keep practicing!
You are an inspiration for us all...

I've been working on _The Entertainer_ for weeks and I'm about 90% there. I just need to tighten it up but it's the only thing I know how to play. 😆 Once I get it down pact, I'm going to attempt to tackle this sucker. It's one of my favorite compositions of all time. Watching his just reminded me that I need to go practice. Thanks, gotta go!
Joplin said not too fast ' so true ' he's a forgotten genius , his music slow is beautiful and elegant , played fast it sounds garish . Joplins music is beautiful beyond words .
True. I like this rendition, and I am also very partial to Joshua Rifkin's and Cory Hall's.
@@johne7345 I agree with you on the rendition of Joshua Rifkin and Cory hall
@@b.bcalsko1512 The biggest lie, and the greatest argument for ragtime. First off, ragtime was banned across many towns in the United States for it being considered too wild, hence many people considered it the "devils music" because of the insanely fast ragtime performances those early piano players put on. Secondly, Scott Joplin had never specified for his ragtime pieces to be played slowly. He never stated that. The sheet music states "do not play fast", this does not mean it must be played super slow. Finally to prove a point, the literal words on the published sheet music "do not play fast" were added by the publisher John Stark, not Scott Joplin himself in 1899. There is no verbal, or written account that Joplin ever stated his music should be played slowly, period.
Loco Airlines I hate when people get religious about tempos.
I think Maple Rag played "not too fast" - as she plays - makes it both jolly and relaxing. Astonishing!
I still haven't seen a better video of this song being played. This sounds sooo CLEAN. I just wish there was a studio version of her playing without background noise. I'd download it right away.
Phillip Dyson has an entire album of joplin music. all crisp, all clean.
i love this vid.I always loved piano but I let people convince me I had no musical talent.I was rushed to the hospital and was on life support for days.I played this vid and several others on my youtube favorites.I decided I would learn. My dad got a Casio keyboard and I have learned several songs.I will eventually learn ragtime.Thank you for posting this
Don't ever let people tell you that you can't do something.. If you love it and set your mind to it, you can do anything! Good for you! I hope you'll post some of your ragtime when you learn it!
+Kristen Mosca Yes,it is such a feel good song you cant help but love it!!I I played it so many times!!I already learned a few songs I love like "Greensleeves" and "Hill Street Blues"
+piper xavier That's great!! Keep at it! :)
Don't let people make what you can and cannot do
Keep going for it
+Joe Mastopietro Thank you so much for your comment.I played this vid so many times in the hospital.I think I put a couple hundred views on it!!
absolutely one of my favourite piano pieces in existence
+Sean “Nemo” Moran i am playing 1st page
+Sean “Nemo” Moran i am eleven years old
+Константин Марунченко And why exactly are you telling us that?
+Ethan Le ^-5
Константин Марунченко I can play the first page perfectly and I'm almost 14
A tune that is instantly familiar to all,but nameable by few.
I keep watching this video over and over again... Kristen plays this so well
Thank you for not playing it lightening fast as too many people do! Joplin wanted the MUSIC heard and comprehended -- he didn't want listeners to be merely dazzled by speed.
Fact or not
Kristen, this is probably one of the nicest interpretation of Maple Leaf Rag I have come across, the occasional little hiccups notwithstanding! Some of the issues in Joplin's own 1916 recordings that I am aware of have been resolved. Love it!
Entertainer is too easy, learned that in a week, now it's been 6 months and I'm still learning page 2 of maple leaf rag
you're a slow learner.
@@tc1817 fuck off, everyone goes at their own pace
Lol you got so offended
T C stated a fat good ol’ stone hard cold donkey dick fact
You're probably not playing the original version of the entertainer then.. I think getting all the notes correctly in the right hand is a lot more difficult in the entertainer than in maple leaf rag
I spent years trying to play Scott Joplin’s ragtime. Now at 73, since I found your channel, I can just sit back and enjoy listening. Thank you for all the music you play. You are truly blessed as a pianist.
I'd like to see Tom Brier sit down at that piano and play.
He made the comment before it happened.
:'(
Same
May he recover one day :(
why
Watching her fingers dance over those keys is just beautiful in itself, the fact that she plays so beautifully makes it all the more special. Lovely. :/)
Agreed. Her fingers are dancing. A good description.
I am going back to Disney World just to see you play that Boogie Woogie in person. You're amazing on the ivories!
+Pete Totaro Thank you!! But I don't play at Disney World! I just play sometimes at Disneyland in California because I have friends who work there 😜
So my wife & I need to renew our Disnayland annual passes some time soon. When we go, one of our favorite places to hang out is around the piano.
Kristen Mosca thank you sister, lm rolling on a loop!
+Peter Kosen is this the disney in cali?
Rebecca Wilson Yes. This piano is right outside the ice cream parlor at the end of Main Street toward the center of the park at the original Disneyland in Anaheim, southern California.
i come back to this video every couple months or so. this video was actually the reason i started playing piano, and i now know MOST of the maple leaf rag by memory. thank you for inspiring me.
Her use of the pedal is masterful. One can play that piece with less pedal or more, & it will be good, but her judgment in using it is amazing.
Finally someone who plays it at the right tempo, and it sounds fantastic! Maybe could add a little pedal here and there but overall good job
You have a 'tell' you know. Every time you miss a note, you smile. But smiling is better than getting mad at yourself. Even the best have an occasional wrong note.
It's incredibly refreshing seeing proof that young people can learn a real skill like very accomplished piano playing(Or any real musical instrument for that matter) instead of rotting in a basement playing ridiculous video games or Guitar-Hero. This is real: truly tangible, and a skill she will get to share and enjoy for the rest of her life. :)
And to answer the age question - I was 23 in this video. :)
I just found you...I love the way you play. I subscribed to your channel.
So you're finally a boomer.
No offense xD.
Well done, Kristen! Such a comfortable approach to performing! It looks and sounds like you are having a blast, and THAT'S the way music should be! So glad that you share your lovely talent with the world.
I loved watching her hands move over that keyboard. Beautifully played.
SO cool! I never heard that song in it's entirety. Really nice playing!
Super cool...I always loved passing through the Carnation area as a kid and hearing Ragtime piano being playing live.
At the end "can I have a picture with you?" So cute ☺️😂
My favourite ragtime tune, I also now have a new favourite ragtime pianist!
That's very damn good, Kristen! You play the signature ascending line with PERFECT fluidity, precisely as I hear Joplin himself playing it. I wonder how often you practice -- if this is just a hobby for you, you might be wasting a lot of talent.
Greg Mark I play for a couple hours a day but yes, just at home. I have a music degree, but in flute!
***** Well, you could get paid for doing it! :)
brilliant could listen to thisall day
I think people who make music, particularly good music like this, should be treasured for the talents they share with us. I enjoyed this very much Kristen! Keep it up.
I listen to this all the time, it's just phenominal. So well paced, not rushed, really lush version of Maple Leaf Rag.
Nailed it pretty much. Nice chops. To my untrained ear, it sounds almost exactly like the Dick Zimmerman rendition in my collection. I've always preferred the "Maple Leaf Rag" to the better known "The Entertainer" and "The Easy Winners," which most people know from the soundtrack of The Sting.
Crisp and clean..
that old man at the back looked stunned!!! XD
Not stunned - Pleased
"That Old Man"
***** He might live in Anahim and has a year pass.If you have one on those you could go every weekend if you want.I agree though ,I think I saw him play "It's A Small World"on RUclips
***** It would be so cool to live in Anaheim and go whenever you want to disneyworld. For a while my family lived in Daytona .What does fwiw mean?
Old man doesnt work ther and is a fair pianist. Stan long
@@solong36 I was about to ask if she bumped you off the bench. ^_^
With here priceless performance piece, it can now be DECLARED that Disneyland is the MOST HAPPIEST PLACE ON EARTH!!!
You get this little smirk on your face when you make a mistake. LOL You still make a piano jump up and sing. Great Job!!
I love this song, like when you pass the point of learning it, your fingers just feel weightless over the keys like they're being carried themselves
Awesome version. A reasonable tempo with a nice touch of staccato.
Superbly awesome. 😊 I like it. And I can imagine the Disney characters - especially Pluto, Donald, Jafar, Princess Tiana, Prince Naveen and Dr. Facilier - being there and applauding you, as well as giving you a double thumbs-up for playing “Maple Leaf Rag” so beautifully, too. 😊
I have to agree this sounds more soothing and peacefull. You can appreciate the melody further and feel each notes being played flowing perfectly each one after another. Tough I do like the " faster " version of this piece which makes it more " joyfull " as in it makes you want to dance more. I can't really describe it with the correct words ( Not native english sorry ) but yeah, both tempos are good to hear. Just sets different moods.
DAMN! That was amazing. I tried learning to play ragtime. It's tough! Love how your hands look like they're just dancing across the keys :).
This is my personal opinion , i hope no one gets offended. Musicians have their favorite composer. It is like religion. You could be a Bethoven fan, or a Bach lover, or any other composer. I have a book of Scott Joplin music For years, I have tried to play some pieces from it. But some rags in it are very hard to play and demand a lot of time to study. I have seen lots of Joplin's pieces in you tube. But Kristen's performances are so perfect than even a computer could not play rhe notes with the exact timing as she does. She is so perfect is amazing. I thank God , and you tube for letting us hear a real miracle. She is like a ragtime machine. Perfect. Thanks Kristen for sharing your talent with us.
Perfect speed for this song. Not too fast and not too slooooowwwwww!...but just right!
Perfect comment and yeah it was my thought!
Thank you for making smile, and feel so good. You have a very special gift.
Diane Benker true buddy
Talk about flying fingers!!! Your left hand jumping back and forth is absolutely incredible... Wonderful job!!! Love it!!!
This is absolutely incredible. I love this song and Disney, and you nailed this! I gotta check the newer version too now.
There's a saying: "It's what you learn after you know it all that counts." She was such a good delightful performer 11 years ago when this was posted, but, Holy Cow, has she improved in her playing and composition! I still regularly visit her page to listen to her "Quarantine Rag" that she wrote during covid. I think it's the best rag written in the last 20 years.
Beautiful girl!!! Great Scott Joplin!!! Just marvelous!!!
Some pianists take pride in playing it as fast as possible. But this performance has the proper speed to listen - it is not a 'race' to the finish. Beautiful !
I've always wanted to learn to play this song on piano. Absolutely stunning! Very well played!
I could listen to this all day!
I like , a fairly completed piece played with such ease.
Love Scott Joplin and Your my favorite player. Great talent.
Damn Jonny you're pretty good!
I practically grew up in Disneyland (Anaheim) and practically lived in the New Orleans Square listening to all the ragtime and honky tonk jazz music. THIS is absolutely wonderful ... thank you for sharing! ❤❤❤
That was really good..... Think you made Scott Joplin very happy..... :)
Excellent... played correct. I can play piano just a bit. Watching her play makes me want to go for lessons. I wish I can play at that level.
Seeing Jonny and Kristen in the same video made my day :D
Haha same
Kristen gives me a good reason to actually *want* to go to Disneyland! ✈
@Azzurro007: Too slow for being ragtime? your kidding right??? That was played almost at the exact speed Scott Joplin wrote it. And this piece is THE ragtime. This piece influenced all other ragtimes written after. Joplin was the KING of ragtime, and this piece is the ragtime all other ragtime pieces wanted to be... How can you say that a piece is too slow for being a ragtie... when the piece is THE reference for all ragtimes???
I might have said "ragtimes" too many times there, but the fact is, this is THE ragtime!
Agreed, Scott joplin said himself that his music was played too fast by others, anyway ragtime sounds great slow as well.
I wouldn't say that this is too slow, but the faster the better, in my opinion.
Kevin Luna I respect your opinion, as it's all about personal taste, but I think you miss some of the detail of the beautiful and clever melody, fast is flash but I prefer slower, I play Scott joplin rags on guitar, I know it's obviously not the same as piano, but for some reason on guitar they are better suited to a slower tempo, you can savour the notes and melody more. I also think ragtime sounds better slower on piano. But it's all personal taste, that's the beauty of ragtime the music can sound great fast or slow.
PERFECT !!!
PERFECT TEMPO AS WELL !!!
JOPLIN WROTE ALL OVER HIS SCORES THAT HIS RAGTIME WAS NOT TO BE PLAYED TOO FAST..........
Joplin was a pure Genius! He invented a completely new style of music!!!! She’s pretty great too!!!
love the way you tickle those ivory keys :)
I'm 54.5 years of age...last song I learned how to play was the entertainer...just so happens I was checking out some Ragtime while I wait to find an electric keyboard, so I can pick up where I left off in 1975..your God given talent has inspired me even more..Thanks
Damn !!! that girl can play.
This is awesome. I love ragtime because it's such happy music and that woman playing it is so, so, so . . . beautiful.
I love this video you're so talented...makes me impatient to go to Disneyland this upcoming Thursday :)
+Ajaykay Gurl I'm going next week too!
I used to love playing this song. Scott Joplin was one of the biggest musical genii in history.
Jonny: “Imma let this random girl play no problems” Also Jonny “Get her out of her before the boss sees this and I get replaced”
Until I read this, I was under the impression that she was the professional musician hired to play there...
This is the way rags should be played... relaxed, elegant, flowing... really terrific! Rags are not a virtuosic exercise. And... such beautiful relaxed technique.
You played very nice Kirsten! I love playing the piano and now I am trying "The Entertainer". Do post also this piece if you have it.
bmwforlife461 Gosh, I haven't played that one in so long that I forget it! I'll have to do a refresher on it!
One of my favorite spots in the parks. I'm always hoping someone is playing. LOVE this song. One of my favorites.
WOW, Its safe to say she was in the zone...
Found you on Tik Tok glad you are on YT also. Most enjoyable!
This woman's got SOUL!
I learned to play Maple Leaf when I was 16 (1964). Was a classical pianist but ragtime grabbed me. My teacher was classical but also ragtime (played in a saloon in Colorado during the summers). Loved the music & played numerous tunes (some at the Big Texan Steakhouse for free beer in Amarillo). This young lady has the stride down right & I love this video.
Wow. I'm in love.
Absolute best version of the Maple Leaf Rag I've ever heard. Two thumbs up!
A great song played by a really cute woman and played WELL. Nice.

an all time good song that in the old days it took 2 people to play this. but one woman does it all. hats off to her. may god bless her
'Jonny may' will be proud!
Maple leaf rag, The Entertainer, Heliotrope bouquet, Weeping willow, and Solace are my top 5 fav Joplin songs
I think I'm in love o_O
same thing:D
***** Awwww you guys are hilarious!
Dylan KY wow haha
NOW you *_Thought_*
You play d'em Rags lady! Loving it!
I just clicked to be entertained, not to judge.
You did great. A TOUCHDOWN PERFORMANCE in every way.
OSCAR are you FUCKING DANCING YET?
Heard first measure, subscribed immediately! One word for this performance: SUPERB!
you bet. superb is the right response. she nailed it. it's so hard to play this one. left hand bass line if so difficult to pull off. I think Joplin made things up if he made mistakes.
Beautiful! The music ain't half bad either ;-)
RoboTekno Aww shucks. ;)
Very good! You are one of the few pianists who play this in true ragtime rhythm - using straight eights notes, not dotted eights
Amazing
This is a great piece for beginners. Easy to play. Taking nothing away from Kristen! Great job!
Easy for a beginner? Really??? Alas...there's always at least one of 'you' guys in every comment section, it seems.
Not only does she play great, she's Bunsen burner-hot. Great job! 🎹
That's a nice compliment, I'll use it from now on.
Wow, she was awesome and beautiful on top of it!
Man I wish the people in the background would shut up XD
It’s disneyland, what did you expect? Σ(゚д゚lll)
Let's ALL got to DISNEYLAND!!! I'll TREAT and we'll watch KRISTEN!!! I love her ragtime-play swagger. Janis....of course I'm referring to Scott Joplin would be so proud of her!!! GREAT JOB!!!
Did you see the piano reach for a smoke after?
She has a lovely touch, just love the rhythem
did you just ask them if you could play it
Pretty much
Kristen
brilliant and very authentic well done
i grandma used to play this at the theatre back in the day. i never heard her of course. also i'm in my 40s now so i hear lol.
i appreciate people who have mastered any instrument. it takes time and dedication. like karate, heyyyyaaahhhh!
