  • 3 years later I came back to redeem myself.
    Let's be honest:
    - I am awkward.
    - This is the 3rd time I've played this here and can't seem to nail that trio yet...but I owned that mistake!
Thank you former and current Main Street pianists Johnny Hodges and Eric Abrahamson for an awesome time at Coke Corner! :)
My “Joplin Fave Five” album is now available on iTunes, Spotify, and Amazon music!

As soon as you were finished the pianist sat right back down and it almost sounded like he was trying to save his job 😂. He started playing so fast 😂 (even though I know it is ragtime)

The hired piano player in the back is like, "Damn, I might be out of a job."

The hired player bowed his head
Because he knew that he'd been beat
And he laid that golden piano
On the ground at Kristen's feet

No he isn't. He knows very few could play that gig. Check that schedule. Same tunes over and over. The approved Disney play list. Then there are the TOURISTS!

The only thing more impressive than her brilliant playing, is the thought that Joplin was able to invent such magic, then write it down for the world to enjoy forever. :-)

I also preferred the tempo of the first take. You never miss notes when you're sitting at home with your dwarfs. I'm reminded of a Tchaikovsky piano competition in Russia I saw on TV once. In the end, the contestant who won made many 'mistakes'. But it was the musicality he gave to his performance which won the day, despite the 'mistakes'.

This version of this famous rag is something of a special kind. I play it myself and know how difficult it is. But Kristen Mosca she fears nothing when it comes to speed. Would not have a chance myself. In normal cases, the tempo removes some of the harmony of music if it goes too fast, but in Kristen Moscow's performance, it is above all her incredible sense of rhythm in interaction with her youthful charming performance that fascinates me. I do not talk about her hat hehe.
Especially for her is the left-hand rhythmic rhythmic dynamics that impress me.
Yes, I noticed that it was derailed at the most difficult place but Kristen, she just smiled a charming smile and continued as if nothing had happened. I myself would not have had the slightest chance at this incredible tempo.
You cannot compare her style with neither Joshua Riffkin nor Dario Rontchi. They play more clean and in concert-style, while Kristen Mosca, I imagine, plays as Scott Joplin did in his days.
In doing so, she symbolizes to me the very soul of Scott Joplin in ragtime music.
