I have an ex racehorse too, I've had him since he was 4 he's now 22! I love that your showing all this with a TB because I feel like the Dressage world looks down on them a bit because they're not as flashy but their minds and thier hearts are just amazing and I think more should be made of them. I'm really interested to see you prepare him for Novice as I'm aiming for the same thing at the moment. Before our accident we used to compete at Elementary but after it, it took us both a long time to heal and I completely lost my confidence for a long while. DMA has been a lifesaver for me and because of it we had a really successful year at Prelim and I feel like my riding has been better than it ever was when I was eventing and competing elementary dressage so thankyou guys so much! Can't wait to see more!
I'm so happy to hear you attribute his behaviour to pain. Race horses are put under so much physical pressure before they've even finished growing causing things like bowed tendons and micro fractures. Then they get punished for being 'naughty' when they're actually in pain..unless they go to a lovely person like you! xx
His condition is incredible! And those legs are looking so much better 👏 I've got a TB in with me at the moment, all 17,1 hands of horse who raced until he was 7! Putting weight and muscle on him is proving a challenge!
Wow! Just goes to show you that in the right hands and correct handling and care, that a horse can become his very best. Thanks for that. Mowgley looks amazing!
As a beginner I felt overwhelmed with information like how am I going to learn and remember all things horse. But I am so keen to learn. I have a OTT TB my breeding plans didn't go to plan so now plan b is getting her under saddle. Glad to have found a coach to train me and my horse.
Hi Alicia and team I just want to say thank you for the video on the correct seat position. Luv this one on Mowgli. Luv your work luv your horses. Vick in Oz
This has been great to see up close how much Mowgli has come on. Love his designer over reach booties.😉 I bet Jasmine must be so pleased to be there with you watching and being involved with his care and development. Cheers Alicia.🧡🧡💛💛
So imformative :) your comments about the tendon improvements are so interesting. My mare had a tendon injury & underwent surgery & rest but actually when I got back into riding her again in the correct way this has helped her recovery enormously :) x
Good video for any age horses. I take care of my 15 years old horse like you. Sometimes training , sometimes resting and waiting horse muscle recovery and walking with my horse on the road.
I loan a 20 year old ex racehorse at my riding school. He is the love of my life 🤣 and he makes me want to be a better rider. I really loved your video with #harlow about getting the horse on the bit as I am struggling with that one.. amongst a lot of other things. 🐎
So great to see mowgs again! His videos are always so inspiring as many of us have the same struggles with our green horses and I love seeing how you work through his balance and suppleness issues.
Fabulous video!!! Well put together update that covers all the big points. I have a some general questions: Boots: how does one decide what boots to use? how do different styles of boots protect tendons - on a mechanical level? what difference does the padding or stiffness or shape make to the type of support? How do you decide what type of support your horse needs? Injuries: I follow a racehorse rehoming organization (and drool over the pics of handsome horses I can't yet have) and broken sesamoids seem to be very common. Some horses get time off, heal, and are advertised to have few limitations on their future work. Some are limited to trails, walk/trot only. A few are no longer rideable. Can shoeing and nutrition and careful exercise like you've given Mowgs make the remnants of a healed broken sesamoid go away as dramatically as it has the bowed tendons? Is a broken sesamoid likely to come back as arthritis ten years later and cause trouble where a soft tissue injury maybe not? I know you are not a vet but I guess I am looking for advice as to whether a horse should be eliminated from consideration for a dressage career if it has a broken sesamoid (or two) or might it be as fixable as you have made the bowed tendons appear to be? Sorry to be so long. Thanks for all your fabulous info and energy!
Hi Beth! SUPER questions! Regarding boots- check out this episode of Dressage Explained (around minute 8) where Alicia talks about this in depth - ruclips.net/video/DEeivoFAv2U/видео.html Alicia will get back to you with an answer about broken sesamoids in the next few days xx
Amazing!!!! So great to follow this journey 💞 just can't wait to see him going again. I am interested to see what kind of exercise do you do with him both from the saddle and the ground.
I want to get OTT thoroughbreds for my dressage so these videos are super helpful since I haven't had a horse for a few years but I'm hoping to get one by the end of 2022. My goal is the 2032 Olympics here in Brisbane.
I have a just turned 4 year old that is half Friesian, so more like a warmblood in type. He has had various growth spurts and has become quite bum high at times. Am I right in thinking that he needs a lot of time in the lower tier of the training scale before I expect much from him? He seems to need lots of stretching forward and down and struggles with less than a 30 m canter circle. Right now, the main thing I am working on that doesn't come naturally to him, is to get him reactive to the leg and to really engage behind. The bum high thing must surely keep things a bit hard for him? It is way less than it was a year ago, so I hope he continues to come up in front!
Hi Helen! Thanks for your message! When training any horse, young or old the goal is to use the training scale and progress the horse by working systematically through the training scale. Do you have some video of your horse so we can help you with the next step? You could send it to us at support@yourridingsuccess.com and just put a copy of this message with your email xx
Please could you do a video on feeding, i have a Friesian x ( Tash is to blame 😁)( shes going lovely) thanks to all your excellent tuition but she really need more energy and i am at a loss what to feed, please help 🐎
Great video, love all the information. But I get a little stressed when I hear how much you train him. I would love to do that with my horse but when I am working full time and having a 7 year old at home I don’t have time. I try to ride/train at least 2 times a week and 1 longe, is that enough? The horse is 8 years old. 😘
Hi Jenny! SUPER question! Don't feel stressed! Every horse is different and everyone's schedule is different! Being worked 3 times a week is perfectly fine to acheive a good level of health x
This is my exact schedule for my gelding as well! Who is 7 this year! I also find that it’s a good amount for my horses brain! Good to know I’m not alone!
Hi Melissa! Often when clipping you can leave the hair on the legs to help keep the horse warm, especially if the horses spend time out in the fields or live outside. So you clip the parts of the horse that get most sweat ie saddle area and neck xx
Hi Alicia, thank you for the update Mr Mowgli looks great. Alicia one question regarding his feed. I just wanted to confirm the Soya Bean Meal because you said it's high in fat ! Wish I could !
He looks awesome! Any tips for an OT Standardbred? She’s very strong and super forward in trot and downward to walk will often shuffle and pace. Just using and eggbut snaffle. Not trying canter until we have a nice balanced walk and trot.
I know Im not the person you asked but i have worked with a few otsb’s before. Poles really help improve the trot rhythm. Not too many in a row, i would only do three or four. Also long and low trotting each session with as loose reins as possible to help the horse learn to carry herself. Because i do not know the horse, I cant know for sure but many green horses will be very forward in the trot because they are trying to stay balanced. Keep calm and let her move at the speed she finds easier. Don’t try to shorten and collect the trot, seeing as shes weak it will be too hard and just make her anxious. Let her move. Once you have a rhythm going, do lots of downward and upwards transitions. Trails up and down small hills will help with strength too! Seeing as your mare is strong, I understand this may not be possible, but I find its easier for the standies to learn how to canter with a rider in an open field. I find that most of them seem to find it less difficult then in a confined dressage sized arena. Also don’t stress about the correct lead at first. If she picks up the wrong one, keep going for a few strides so she can settle in to the movement. Good luck with your girl! People look down on standardbreds so often, but they can be great! Especially their temperament. I actually saw one preforming wonderfully at a dressage show last weekend.

I have really struggled with my ottb - teaching him that he can use his back and how to get the concept of working over his back- he is so trainable but I think I am missing something?! This is a super question Tameka! You want to really use the training scale to get the horse working properly. We'd love to be able to see what is happening to give you some more specific advice- are you able to email us at support@yourridingsuccess.com?
Wow he looks great. It's great that he really seems to be enjoying the learning. I'm so glad his tendons are coming good. Is that likely to be a problem for him going forward or just something you (or whoever his owners in the future are) will just have to be aware of?
I have an OTTB and have had similar foot issues but I am struggling with him being comfortable being shod every 4/5 weeks. He seems to have a very small tolerance area for where a nail can go without being tight. He is then sore for a few days after each shoeing. Have you had any similar issues with Mogowli.?
Hi Samantha! We haven't had similar issues with Mowgley but have with previous horses.Horses grow their hooves at different rates and your farrier should be able to advise you on the best course of action. He may not be growing enough foot (this often happens in winter and may change in summer) so you may need to adjust the time inbetween being shod throughout the year. Hope this helps! x
