@@epilogue1436 That is a great solo on a great song, but I am partial to his contribution to It's No Game part 1. He just goes bananas on that song; and is a perfect counterpoint to Bowie screaming at the top of his lungs while Michi Hirota calmly narrates in Japanese.

Well my top 4 guitarists are in your top 15 for sure. But my top 4 is 1. Andy Latimer 2. David Gilmour 3. Steve Hackett 4. Steve Rothery Honourable mention: Nick Barrett (Pendragon) Thanks for your interesting post PS Great to see Andy Powell there. He should've been a lot higher, but then again take 'Argus' away and, although Wishbone Ash are a fine band were/are they true prog ?
I love Alex but he’s not higher than Steve Howe, the position of Steve Howe, makes this list a joke, not one guitarist on this list is as talented or as versatile as Steve.
Any list that includes Andrew Latimer can't be bad. Also the fact you had Holdsworth on the list (assume for UK and perhaps Bruford work) shows you know what you are talking about.
Mike Holmes (IQ), Roine Solt (The Flower Kings, Transatlantic, Kaipa...), Alan Morse (Spock's Beard), Niall Mathewson (Pallas), Ian Crichton (Saga), John Mitchell (Arena, It Bites...)
Lilla’s Dance from the _Vision of the Emerald Beyond_ album. My fav song from the album is Eternity’s Breath Pt.1. Narada Michael Walden just blows you away with his drumming. The whole album is worth a big listening.

Though all these guitarists are great, I can think of one that stands up to the best of them, really should be in the top 5, and that is Steve Morse. As for the list order here, it's subjective, and basically someone's opinion.
@@thecandlemaker1329 In some ways. But Zappa can do both hoewever. Gilmour seizes the beautiful open spaces in Floyd's song great. Amazing tone and melodies but still no way Gilmour is above Zappa. Hot Rats, Freak-Out and Muffin Man goes crazy. In both melody and shredding.
@@michaelbeerbados3291 Yeah Gilmour above Howe is ABSURD AND UNFATHOMABLE. If Gilmour is above Zappa, Fripp, Belew and Howe you need to get your fucking head checked!
You probably oughtn't put a Holdsworth example on here that's not from any of his dozens of non-prog albums (you chose Metal Fatigue which is from a solo record he did in 1985). Also, as a guitarist, he is head and shoulders more amazing than any other guitarist on the list, and on even the few prog bands he worked with -- UK, Soft Machine, Gong -- he was doing stuff way beyond anyone else, before or since. So he should clearly be #1, if you're going to put him on this list at all that is.
To list Steven Wilson is to embarass him I think. He rarely play lead guitar on his albums. In the case of the song here it's Guthrie Govan you're hearing. A guy that should've been on the list actually.
Where is the criterion for this ranking if Richard Henshall, a modern virtuoso on an 8-string guitar, is in 15th place and everything that comes after that sounds like guitar students in pre-school who have lost two fingers on the circular saw? Very bad: Steven Wilson who is neither an outstanding singer nor a good guitarist and constantly steals from himself. John Petrucci, the progressive guitar god in persona, is missing. Dream Theater hater perhaps?
1. Guthrie Goven 2.John Petrucci 3. Tosin Abasi 4. Tim Henson 5.Ty Tabor 6. Alex Lifeson 7. Frank Zappa 8.Michael Romeo 9. Robert Fripp 10. David Gilmour
First, the order doesn't matter that much, top list are pretty boring except if you take it as simply a list. Second, it's pretty obvious you don't know shit about guitar if you don't understand why Fripp could be considered better than Gilmour.
The work that Fripp did with Bowie - on "Heroes" and, especially, Scary Monsters and Super Creeps - is remarkable.
Teenage Wildlife is one of my favorite solos from him

I think a little injustice was done that Gary Green from Gentle Giant was not even on this list…
Right, I was looking forward to seeing him. An absolute legend.
@@Chadner Amen to that. Gary Green is so very gifted.
Adrian Belew
Steve Hillage, Steve Vai, John Petrucci
Well, what about Jeff Beck?
My personal top 5 progressive rock guitarists would be:
1. David Gilmour
2. Steve Hackett
3. Robert Fripp
4. Steve Howe
5. Alex Lifeson
Steve Howe SEVEN???

Steve Howe deserves first place

My prog list (Howe, Fripp, Akkerman,)
My Fusion list (McLaughlin, Holdsworth, Metheny)
Steve Howe should have been much higher as he can play so many different styles. But it was good to see Andy Powell included.
Steve Howe hat hier gar nichts zu suchen 😢😢. Er spielt unsauber und unrythmisch 😢😢
Steve Hackett ❤
Excelente selección!!!
Excelente posicionamiento!!!
howe n 1
Steve Hackett def number 1!
I view Zappa more as a composer than a guitar player.
I do agree, but his skills on the guitar are pretty remarkable as well
he was primarily a composer, but easily the best guitarist on this list
Nah, I don’t agree with that.
@@nsanenbrane53 you do know stuff like 'shut and play ya guitar' ?
I like gilmore, fripp etc but that"s far better than anything they ever did.

No Mike Oldfield?
You crazy forgot Roine stolt " last carnivor " or final solo in " all of the above " , and all his compositions would help to change your mind
Mike Holmes (IQ), Roine Solt (The Flower Kings, Transatlantic, Kaipa...), Alan Morse (Spock's Beard), Niall Mathewson (Pallas), Ian Crichton (Saga), John Mitchell

Lilla’s Dance from the _Vision of the Emerald Beyond_ album.

Song list pls?
Thanks a lot, Imao, Steve Howe is the most skillful guitarist of genre and gets 7th position?
It's my same opinion. Howe Is a great, minimum in 3th position
Overrated guitarist in a medicore band. Yes is what made progressive music as a whole seen as as wizard show, not as a genre.

Gary Green ??????
Don't forget Jan Ackerman
good selection ! but i feel john petrucci should be on there but almost need a top 30 because there are quite a few more
Gilmour above Zappa is mindblowing to me
I can see that. Glimour is less technical than Zappa, but a better melodist.
Gilmour isn't someone who shreds on the guitar. His playing is a beautiful sway from note to note.
Gilmour ahead of Steve Howe..now you know the slant of this list. TARDO

Robert Fripp
