I do dig UFO, but I'm definitely a slavishly devoted Thin Lizzy fan.
It's UFO by the tiniest of margins because of Schenker, who is arguably the greatest heavy rock guitarist ever, along with Blackmore of course. One thing's for certain though, both of them wrote a lot of magnificent tracks. Either with rockers or ballads, they were true songwriting bands.
Also, "Mechanix" is Paul Chapman's greatest album for me, severely underrated. "Doing it all for you" and "The Writer" and "You'll get Love" are awesome.
I love both , but UFO is one of my fav bands ever, so for me its UFO
Per Wikipedia, Jailbreak is certified gold in the US per the RIAA.
For me, UFO slightly over Thin Lizzy. For their prime period of 1974-1983, I feel that UFOs albums are more consistent than Lizzys, esp in the 80s. I think this may be due in part to Phil splitting writing time between Lizzy and his solo albums, resulting in some uneven 80s Lizzy albums. UFOs early 80s albums were a bit stronger for me esp Wild Willing Innocent and Mechanix. Also, UFO had more texture to their music through adding keyboards in the mid 70s (Lizzy added Wharton in 1981). Both bands were great live with legendary live albums. Both Phils were great writers with street wise lyrics and excellent turn of phrase. Lizzy had great guitar players, but UFO had the greater guitar player in Schenker and a highly underrated player in Chapman. Great discussion, both great bands.
Very well put!
I love both of these bands. But it's Thin Lizzy for me. Its not even close. But I do love UFO. Thin Lizzy are almost tied with Queen as my favorite band.
Thin Lizzy- not even close!!
Two words: Phil Lynott!!
Don't belive a word.
UFO all the way for me.
both are great! but the comments will be interesting!
Thin Lizzy is one of the most influential bands of all time. Phil Lynott had the soul of a poet and charisma pouring out of him. His solo material is nearly as good, all the while growing musically and lyrically with each album.
Thin Lizzy is the most underrated rock band in the US imo. The dual guitar sound was ahead of their time.
If Michael Schenker is your quarterback..your a tough dog to tie.
Great episode. A very close contest, in my opinion, but I give the slight edge to UFO.
Thin Lizzy - all day, every day
UFO because just the run from phenomenon to wild and the willing just classic after classic.
Lizzy....next lol
Thin Lizzy rules!!!
Both great bands but Thin Lizzy wins hands down for me but to be fair, I have all of the TL albums and only two UFO. I've heard some of their other stuff, as I only have Phenomenon and Force It on cd but for me, it's Thin Lizzy all day. I'll have to make it my mission to listen to some of those UFO albums this weekend. Great show gentlemen.
Thanks. Enjoy listening to those other UFO albums.
@@parishofrock2963 Thanks, Parish!
UFO is my fav of them and Wild Willing Innocent and Mechanix are the 2 best albums. Lizzy´s Black Rose is maybe number 3.
Lizzy for me, both legendary and masterful at doing hard rock, but concerning mellow songs, Lynott is more convincing and accomplished at writing lyrics about love, trouble with women and relationships, as well as sing them with emotion and depth. We've been told to have this image of Mogg and Way as dangerous, heavy drinking dudes starting random fist fights but they insist on coming up with some sappy ballads throughout the catalog that hardly work in my opinion. You and Me from Making Contact, a perfect example.
I was vaguely acquainted with both bands back in the day, but Thin Lizzy more so (due to being in the states). As I have drilled down later in life into both of these bands catalogs, I have to go with Thin Lizzy. It's just sexier. Both bands are great, but Lizzy has that groove and even more of an emotional impact.
Sexier is great way to describe Lizzy. Phil definitely appealed to ‘good looking females’ in a way most other UK 70s heavy rock bands never did.
Martin, as I have said before is the biggest Contrarian ever on UFO w/Schenker. I mean “the Schenker UFO albums leave me cold”…AYKM? Martin you are wrong on this one.
My thoughts on Martin Popoff is some cases? He has listened to so much from most classic catalogs (Led Zeppelin, Thin Lizzy, Black Sabbath, UFO, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Judas Priest etc.) that he is so tired of the most common discussions about the bands. Therefor he throws out ideas or opinions that he know will upset fans or make them scratch their heads. My guess is that he really loves Michael Schenker and Gary Moore but just like to discuss something beyond how great they are or their most beloved albums!
I don't know for sure but Martin has said that he loves Black Rose (Gary Moore) and Assault Attack (Michael Schenker) but disregarded other great albums that honestly is quite similar.´
All in all. I wouldn't take Martins similar opinions too seriously. He just likes to have different kinds of debates.
I understand him, I vastly prefer the 80s stuff. What's weird is his bails after Chapman is gone. There's some awesome stuff on Misdemeanor, Ain't Misbehaving and High Stakes.
UFO for me but this was a great discussion and I really enjoyed all the similarities you pointed out
It amazing how similar their careers were in the 70s & early 80s
Thin Lizzy all the way!!!! Better song writing more iconic
Two great bands. Lynott iconic frontman, great singer and songwriter. But it is the mighty UFO for me (including the Chapman era).
Thin Lizzy is my forever #1 but I've really dug into UFO in the last couple years, especially the 80s. Mogg's new album is great too.
Isn’t it just. One of my favourites of the year.
Thin Lizzy every day of the week.
Thin Lizzy and UFO both also had a run of five studio albums with their classic lead guitar lineup, followed by the release of an all-time classic live double album 👍
I'm a big Lizzy fan since my late teens and only this year i bought the big UFO cd box set.
I wanted to go through it chronologically but so far only listened to Phenomenom and Force it (so much new music).
So i can't be a real judge here.
My first impression is that Lizzy far more has their own sound and Phil is such a great singer. UFO feels more of a generich 70's rock bands with some outstanding songs.
Bob Seger
If pressed, I'd go UFO 1, Thin Lizzy 2 but actually they're tied at 1 and 1. Shouldn't be any versus about it. And while I don't think it's their best, Renegade is very underrated, although I usually don't agree with Marty much recently
UFO for me.
Great discussion. Thanks
Both are great bands. Been listening to a lot of Thin Lizzy lately.
Guy stroking his cat is on verge of getting cringy...literally not stopping like he's in a trance. Wow...I like cats but man, looks weird. Can't keep his hands off.
Not close for me. Growing up with both bands in the UK, Thin Lizzy is the band I feel emotionally closest to, while UFO was a good band, but made nowhere near the same impact, either commercially or culturally. I highly doubt the album sales figures ascribed to UFO, I think these things get wildly exaggerated for every band. Thin Lizzy's influence went far beyond their considerable impact in the hard rock and heavy metal genres, something which gets overlooked in these discussions, so you get Thin Lizzy covers across a wide range of genres. Unlikely ones like: Westlife, Sade, The Cardigans, Paul Young, Concrete Blonde, The Cure, Aimee Mann, Belle and Sebastian, The Happy Mondays, and so on. Thin Lizzy appeared regularly on Top of the Pops, the biggest music show in the UK, which might have lost them some credibility with snootier rock fans, but it also made them a gateway band to rock music for a lot of impressionable viewers who never saw, and didn't care about, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple or Black Sabbath.
Absolutely! There is no way on Earth that UFO had sold 20+ million albums... that's preposterous!
Great points. Lizzy definitely crossed over to the casual music fan in a way that UFO never did. Thanks for watching.
Wow, I don't know which one I would pick between the two! I have to think long and hard on this one!
never a big fan of Thin Lizzy hence their hits, but thats just me, love UFO though
It’s Thin Lizzy and as much as i love UFO it isn’t close…. At all.
Thin Lizzy had the song Suicide and UFO had Just Another Suicide. What a great Thin Lizzy song. A "meh" UFO tune.
2 great bands. Always great videos. Thanks 😊
UFO every day. Thin Lizzy is great, but UFO with Schenker is a top 3 rock band of all time.
Great discourse - a draw for me! If I had to pick one, I’d have to go with Thin Lizzy because they had more great guitarists during their pomp 🎸
I listen to these episodes rather than watch, so this is based just on voice. Parish could nearly pass for Alfie Solomons.
Pity I don’t look like him as well!😂
Andrew...Neil Young wrote and sang that line first years before Def Leppard. C'mon you gotta know that.
UFO all the way. Stronger studio album catalog and better overall guitarists and musicians. Martin does not like Michael Schenker, and his favorite Thin Lizzy album is Renegade. Enough said.
Thin Lizzy for me. I think the albums overall is stronger.
Top 10 UFO vs. Top 10 Thin Lizzy songs would be a lot more difficult choice.
You’re right it would be Top 10 songs would be really difficult
Thin Lizzy is my favorite rock band.
UFO is formulaic, generic, and very average, imo. I've owned numerous albums by them over the years, and I've tried to like them... but they leave me cold.
Tbf you can’t like them all
UFO 🎉
This guy with his cat make me laugh, does he really know about this bands
I don't love either band but it's Thin Lizzy as far as this exercise goes.
Big fan of Martin but his comparison was thin gruel...
UFO basic pedestrian riff rock that was saved by a phenomenal guitarist. Lizzy was way more diverse and interesting. My favorite all time band
