  • The HiFi Brothers bring you a first look at the all-new Sonos ARC - Dolby Atmos soundbar. The Arc is now available for pre-order off the Sonos website for $799.
    Whether you're new to Sonos or looking for one of their Home Theater products this may very well be one of the best Dolby Atmos soundbars available.
    For those of us with an existing Sonos soundbar (Playbar, Playbase & Beam), will it be worth upgrading? As the Arc is not yet available it may be up for debate.

    Update: The first actual product reviews on the Sonos Arc are now out! Here is a great article from a credible source: www.engadget.com/sonos-arc-review-dolby-atmos-soundbar-010039560.html

      After personally living with the Arc for the past week, I can honestly say the person who wrote this article must not have a good ear from music because the Arc is NOT a good product for music reproduction at all. It is harsh in its highs, it breaks down at volume levels past maybe 40% and if you send it a good recording of female vocals or maybe a solo piano, it almost hurts your ears with how bright it sounds. At the price point, a true disappointment. It is decent for movie soundtrack reproduction, but even there I found dialogue to be popping at times with the harsh "S" sound especially with some female dialogue. Just not impressed with the Arc and I like Sonos products and own several throughout my home.

    I've got the Sonos Playbase, x2 Sonos SL mini speakers, and the Sonos Sub. I've had them for about a year now and it changed my entire experience with watching movies, listening to music and playing games. The sound is amazing and love that you can automatically tune it depending in what kind of room you are in. With that said, seeing the name Dolby in the product is very tempting, knowing how good the Sonos quality is. I'll prob wait another year or 2 to upgrade my base for the price. Anyone thinking on jumping on Sonos, I highly recommend it.

    Your Sonos videos have helped me so much (specifically the one about buying a playbar in 2020)! Was on the verge of getting a playbar & sub when Sonos made the teaser announcement for May 6th. Glad the timing worked out and I waited to see the new Arc and sub. I'm still attached to the playbar but think I'll be an early adopter and go with their new products. Thanks for the videos!

    Being we didn't have the ARC for a full review, yet, if Sonos' track record tells us anything is that this may be one of the best Dolby Atmos Soundbars out there, well worth the $799 price tag. Anyone new to Sonos or without one of their soundbars should pull the trigger asap!
    However, it's worth noting that upgrading from a Playbar or Playbase, especially for those of us that have had those products for quite some time, may want to wait a little while. We can only wait and hear! Thx

    Been on the sonos bandwagon for about 10 years now , why put ARC connection why not just let you connect direct to soundbar like LG AND PANASONIC DO, hdmi in , hdmi out also no DTS X. Will not be buying this product to replace my playbar , will just buy a different brand .

    What a lot of people don’t seem to understand is Atmos is going to be dependant if your tv passes that sound format to the ARC. I have a 2018 Panasonic OLED which will not pass this on. Sonos should have included a second HDMI connection for pass thru and would also have the ability to get Atmos from a specific source.

    • @chrisbexsta85
      @chrisbexsta85 4 года назад +1

      Larry Raigrodski so if you use a device like an Apple TV or UHD Bluray player as your source you won’t get Dolby Atmos unless your tv supports eARC. So you have to use the Netflix app etc that are built into the TV (which those apps aren’t always great depending on how onto it your tv manufacturer is with updates).

      I’m considering the same thing. The playbar is quite old. 7 years I think. Arc will be supported much longer.
      Also if you have sonos one speaker which are airplay 2 enabled if you connect them in surround to the playbar you lose the airplay functionality for the surround setup since playbar doesn’t support it

    • @Ketro96

      @@StoneSideDeathGrip I wouldn´t do it like this...
      Keep in mind, that a new ARC is not that much more expensive than a brand new Playbar (if you didn´t have a major rabate)

    • @kaysandy676
      @kaysandy676 4 года назад

      I am sure a lot of RUclipsrs will be reviewing and comparing soon. BUT, if this is building on the playbar, it will be worth the investment (Investment being the operating word) as Sonos put a lot into engineering and in turn, they will expect "a lot" if you want to own a piece of their engineered work.
      On the differences besides the shape, the Arc has a connection called the HDMI eArc. This connection delivers more data (audio and visual) compared to optical. So, because it transfers more data it also transfers more information for the speakers' processors. Unfortunately, older TVs do not support HDMI Arc, let alone eArc. So, that is something to consider.
      The other thing to consider is how much Atmos content there is, as it is still limited in comparison to other sound formats. That being said, the Arc is likely to perform and sound better than the Playbar.
      HiFi Brothers, I stand to be corrected. And I am waiting for your update on the Arc before I consider getting on this coming month!!

      Since you don't have any products yet, I would start with the Arc and take it from there. If you later feel like you need more bass then for sure add the sub.
      That's how I did it. I like to take baby steps when purchasing components, so I can evaluate what I need and take it from there. You could of course just purchase everything all together and just rock it. Definitely no harm in that.

      This RUclipsr is top-notch. Great honest pre-view points. The only way to appreciate a Sonos system is to listen and feel it. I am 3 years old as a Sonorite (I just made that up). But I have never regretted buying four play ones, a playbar and now waiting for my SUB to be delivered. I bought my Playbar from Costco so I will take it back on June 10th, get my £549 refund, top-up from my booze money for the month and go for the Arc. The only downside is that there is limited content which has Dolby Atmos. All the same, you will feel the quality. Remember that you usually get what you pay for. Good luck.

    Just came across your channel and appreciate your honest hands on reviews. I have been a long time user of Sonos products and love their ecosystem for what they are, a technology company first and a speaker company second. Their ease of setup and use through their software is why you come to Sonos to start with. I love their Play1's and think they are a great background music speaker and work well for that whole home music experience. I am not, however, sold on any of their soundbars. I have owned the beam for several months and while it works well enough in my bedroom for TV and basic dialogue, it falls short when reproducing plain music. For the price, a pair of Sonos One's will give you a much better sound stage and much higher fidelity but I accept the sound sacrifice in my bedroom because I want a TV and a speaker and a clean install. For my main listening room though, I have been disappointed with the Arc. It will never replace a simple pair of bookshelf speakers for stereo music and I am not sold on the whole "atmos in a soundbar" concept. I am wondering if you have tested it alongside your Playbar yet for both music and movies. I am thinking that "bang for your buck" the Playbar may still be the best option if you want to improve the sound of your TV and want something that will integrate with an existing Sonos system. Thanks again for your reviews!

    For sure a dedicated Atmos is going to sound better than a soundbar hands down. But what you get from Atmos is also the codec. Atmos sounds (audio quality) better than Dolby digital the same way Dolby true hd sounds better than Dolby digital and Atmos has just that much more information than true hd. That being said no matter what the audio source the speakers will play a factor and at the end of the day it’s still a soundbar, but i think it will sound better than the beam and will definitely play louder which if you’ve heard the beam at times you would like it to be louder

    • @PeopleCallMeTimmy
      @PeopleCallMeTimmy 4 года назад

      Atmos is not a codec. Atmos cannot sound better than Dolby Digital Plus or Dolby TrueHD, as those codecs are simply a way of transmitting sound. Atmos is part of Dolby Digital Plus or Dolby TrueHD, depending on if lossy (DD+) or lossless (TrueHD) Atmos is being used. TrueHD really only matters for Blu Rays, as every single streaming service uses Dolby Digital Plus to transmit Atmos.

      Just an assumption, but judging on the comments (which are relatively positive) our guess is that a few people are using multiple accounts to dislike the video.
      Every like we get equates to an immediate dislike. Just seems rather strange.
      Otherwise, our assumption is wrong and the video is not good. We'll just need to do better next time.

      HDMI-ARC will give you higher bandwidth audio, which is why you'll be able to get Dolby Atmos with the Arc and not with the Playbar.

      My TCL 6 series only supports ARC. So the best I'll be able to get with the Arc is Dolby Digital Plus?! Hmmmmm.

  • @SveinOlavLarsen

    It will of course not be as good as a full Dolby Atmos setup. But I’ve listened to Samsung’s soundbar with Atmos and it is amazing. It’s like sitting in a bubble of sound coming all around you. Mind you Samsung’s solution has rear speakers with up firing sound. Something the Sonos One speakers won’t be capable of... And then there’s the HDMI eARC that is alone worth it for many 🤗

      PPMGunslinger Wel we need to hear it in action. But if it’s anything like the PlayBar then it should be really good. But yes the Samsung Dolby Atmos soundbars are great. But they have had problems with losing connection with the rare speakers and HDMI issues with two generations of their Atmos soundbars now...

      @@PPMGunslinger True. Sonos is most suited for those who are Sonorites (Investing in Sonos products for whole homes setting). It is expandable. The Q90R is awesome, but it is not as expandable. And I think once we know more after real-life reviews, it may be that the Arc is capable of upfiring from the Arc itself to compensate for the rears found on the Q90.

    • @PPMGunslinger

      @@kaysandy676 as far as i know the q90r has upfiring rears and upfiring front, i doubt the arc could be near the samsung's performance. Correct what you say about multiroom and expandability, but imo doesn't worth the money they ask (i do quite the same with chromecasts).

      From what I read so far, ( I am also researching to decide if I should go for the Arc), you can use the HDMI Arc port on your TV to connect to the Sonos' eArc port, however, you will get Atmos (if playing Atmos content) but it will not be the "full experience". I am in the same boat as I have an HDMI Arc capable TV SO I figure Sonos is future proof so in 3 years time I will buy an eArc enabled TV (Probably there will be new HDMI systems!!). Sometimes technology develops at such a pace that its night before it is afternoon!!

    How are we even recommending an upgrade or not if there has not been 1 review out? 200 extra bucks is nothing these days for a soundbar type atmos sound...nothing will ever replace actual speakers positioned above you to really get that true atmos sound, but let's not jump on the not worth the upgrade train until we have some reviews out there.

      Honestly, now that I've had time to sit on this...I feel that Sonos dropped the ball on this recent update of products. Not saying the Arc was a waste, but an update to the Sub and Play 5?! C'mon...nobody asked for those products.
      What they should've updated was the Playbar with HDMI-ARC and charged $599 as a mid-level soundbar, between the beam and Arc. Making it a non-dolby-atmos-kick-ass soundbar. Then give us some new products like Sonos capable headphones and/or an actual receiver with physical buttons.

      HiFi Brothers I think the sub is for the future updates. But new 5 had no new features like maybe they should add voice control or something. Sonos beam went down to 259$ on amazon prime day so if they Delay it I don’t know what I will do because I have till July 17th to return beam if I want the new arc. And already people saw the arc in real life and they said the bass is amazing (I asked myself). So we will see the reviews.
