This was the best Affinity tutorial I've watched. First, I didn't know you can place more than one photo at a time. Second, I didn't know you can use the shape tools to crop. This is a game changer for me. Thank you.
Interesting. I imbed images on shapes all the time but never thought about it as a cropping technique. But I see it now as another method in addition to using the marquis tools, pen tool, freehand selection tool, etc. One of the things I love so much about watching different creators is that there are so many ways in Affinity to achieve similar effects. Thanks.
Using the selection tools is definitely a valid option, but I prefer using shapes because the "crop" can be easily resized at any time, while using the selection tools makes it harder to change after the fact. That's my 2 cents! :)
This video was full of gems! I only knew one way to crop: using the crop tool, but it doesn't work on layers, and this method is so much more versatile! Thank you so much!
Ally. That is just so easy to do! I would have never come with such method to crop and it works so well at placing the image into a shape. I'm realy impressed!
HOOORAYYYYYY!!!! Thank you and bless you for sharing the freeform resizing of the shape while holding the spacebar to prevent skewing the image within it!! This is going to save me so much time, frustration, and eye-rolling!! I cannot thank you enough!!
Thank you for the tutorial Ally, what a great method to fill a shape with a photo and what you can do afterwards. It’s a great way for me to use the shape with the photo in my presentation in Apple Keynote then. I like Affinity Photo more and more. For some reason I don’t like to work with Photoshop. Generative IA I only you use it for removing subjects and fortunately Lightroom does the same jobs nowadays. So I removed Photoshop from my laptop.
Thanks for the video - I am using a mac computer and I can do the first part of the tutorial but when it comes to trying to change the shape (from 1.56 sec) or move the image inside the shape with the space bar it doesn't work. Is there a different command for a mac?
Yup! It's the same in Publisher. 😊 Publisher also has picture frames, if you want to use those instead. They work pretty much the same, but here's a 1 minute video on how to use them: ruclips.net/video/9yMHqb4DCRU/видео.htmlsi=1eZ_XLTTzVuk050d
Affinity photo has SUCH a superior UI/UX to photoshop... but man, they really need a generative fill system, or even just support for a stable diffusion plugin.... I was 100% affinity until gen fill came out, then I had to begrudgingly go back to Ps :( Great tutorial!
This tutorial showed how to crop a single layer. If you just want to do a regular crop of your entire photo, it's much easier: ruclips.net/video/1XVYyQiDokQ/видео.htmlsi=9c2RcwwjrWVxB_qX

I do! Here's a link to it: ruclips.net/video/1XVYyQiDokQ/видео.html
Works great, thanks!

So great! A great tool when compositing multiple different images on a page
Totally! That's a great use case for this. 😊
👍👏
Thank you! 😊
Is this possible in Affinity Photo - not Affinity Photo 2? I don't have the new version, and I am not succeeding. Thx
In version 1, drag the photo's layer down & to the right of the shape's layer (as opposed to dragging it on top of the shape's layer)
I was today years old when I learned, that u can put multiple images on empty document by the "Place" function.
Haha glad you could learn something new! 😁
She really did acknowledge the elephant in the room

Your layer might be locked. If there is a lock icon next to your photo's layer, click on it to unlock the layer.
Thanks, Designer too. Pretty much the same thing.
True, this technique works in all the Affinity programs.
Does something similar to this work in publisher?
Yup! It's the same in Publisher. 😊

@@AffinityRevolutionfantastic. I appreciate the information.
TIP: If your shape needs to have a fill colour, without fill colour the image cropped but u can't really see it.
BTW great video. 👍
Good tip! :)

Gen fill and ai selection are the 2 things I'm jealous of PS. Hopefully Affinity can add something like those eventually! 🤞
Or We need some plugin to connect affinity softwares to external ai generators like comfy ui or automatic1111.
extremely confused in why it had to be this complicated, but thanks
Having to use layer techniques to crop a photo is CRAZY. Microsoft paint has this process beat hands down.
