I have to say: it's clear that she's a trained teacher because she scaffolds/progresses so well. When she said, "don't look at your ukulele, look at me" I knew she was a teacher! [and I was doing exactly what I wasn't supposed to be doing!]. Well done & thank-you
I just bought a ukulele; I’m not "musical," but at a young 72 I want to learn an instrument. I looked at different youtube tutorials, and stumbled upon your 30-day challenge, which I'm on day 11. I have to take a moment to compliment you on the skill you have as an instructor. (Having been an art teacher myself). You break the whole into little parts so successfully, are an extremely clear communicator. You are so encouraging, fun with a sense of humor. It is clear to see what you are doing in the videos. The pacing is great. The metronome practice is terrific; I'm practicing with the metronome on my smartphone app. I haven’t gotten to the strumming much; look forward to that with you! This “C-Am-F-G7 Chord Progression - Ukulele School” is a really terrific beginner chord progression lesson. "Imagine" from lesson 15 looks daunting with so many chords, but this video is good preparation. SUGGESTIONS: - I love your video chord progressions (like moving to G from C, Em, & D); I’d love to see more of these, especially if it includes a song. - It really helps on the videos where you have the chord chart on the right of the video, and it would be helpful, as a real beginner here, if you would list the chords used in the video in the drop-down menu below the video. - Other than the 30-day challenge, I'm not sure, as a beginner, which of your videos are sets to progress from simple to more difficult. It would be great to know which video to watch next, or some more challenges or lessons that progress as I should be progressing. It is not clear to me how to use your Playlists for this purpose. - Another suggestion, as a beginner who has never taken music lessons, how should my 30-60 min of practice go each day? I’m doing some chord progressions, and then a review and a new lesson of your 30-day challenge.
I just turned 70 and have been playing this 30-day challenge over and over again because life sometimes gets in the way and I have to start over. But each time it gets a little faster and you still pick up things that she says even if you've watched it several times. I too was a beginner and I find her vids are the absolute best. How's your progression? Remember, we now have the time to enjoy and not be in a hurry to get from A to B.
An excellent teacher. Your teaching style is inspirational. Thank you so much for helping me learn to play this beautiful instrument. I am a retired school music teacher and played all recorders ,mandolin, concertina,. piano, Catholic church organ for many years now retired through arthritic feet and fingers. I was encourage to take an interest in playing again and fell in love with the ukulele an instrument I used to think was for children, it is for all young and old. so I hope to be able to l;earn enough chords to be able to play in the Local age concern ukulele band.
I'm 70 yr old and just starting ukulele. I love your videos. I'm taking starter lessons, but I find your videos much more helpful. You rock, Bernadette!
Gosh! This is the best music lesson I've had since I was a child. You are a magical music teacher and I have learned a lot today from your videos. Be well and safe, I will be your faithful student in all the best ways. Thank you Miss B!
Bernadette, I have been trying to learn the ukulele for about 18 months. I have been to classes and watched lots of u-tube videos. Now I am addicted to yours. Why? Because you explained it SOOOOOO SIMPLY. Thanks you very much. On to the next lesson. Whoopppeeee.
Domo arigato. Thank you very much Ms Bernadette. I am a brand new ukulele student. I discovered your amazing lessons recently in February 2019. I have been practicing 20 minutes every evening with your lessons on RUclips. Your instructions are always so clear and easy to follow.
My favorite chord progression right now. I love going back and forth from Am to F a couple of times. I could play this using the Island Strum all day and never get tired of it.
THANK YOU so much! I have been struggling because of my head injury (a souvineer from war). This video made a lot of sense and now I won't give up on it. Stay cool Ms. B!
Brilliant instruction and instructor. I love this chord progression and its variations. I sometimes do "G" instead of "G7" (big fat short fingers and arthritis). Sometimes I leave the ring finger on "C" as a variant to "Am" and "F" creating slash chords "Am/C" and "F/C".
I really liked this video. I just got my first ukulele yesterday. I played guitar over 20 years ago. Gave it to my nephew who is amazing on guitar. But I decided on a ukulele instead. I’m so excited and I’ve viewed several of your videos even before deciding on getting a ukulele. Thanks you for your videos.
Thank you for making the chord progressions video! I have learned some chords, but putting them together and learning how to transition between chords is the hard part. Plus, this is what explains the fingering choices. 😊
Bought my ukulele 3days ago. Thanks so much for your well made and easy to follow tuitorials. I'm falling in love with my uke because of these tutorials! Thanks again Miss B♥️💝
God everything about this video is perfect. I love the way you express yourself with such charm, and it's very easy to learn when listening to the calm way you speak! Congratulations this has been a great class and I hope to one day play as naturally as you do.
Bernadette - these videos are great! Thank you so much, I plan on using this particular one for sure w/ my 5th graders when we start uke next year. There are SO many popular songs that can be played using those 4 chords: "I'm Yours" (Jason Mraz), "Wavin' Flag" (the theme song for the World Cup soccer matches when they were in Africa), "Soul Sister" (Train), etc. I love that you use the same exact sticker colors that we use! One thing my kids would prob. ask about - you keep your left elbow at your side, you have such long fingers that it looks like you can get good hand & finger position w/o putting your elbow out, but I tell my kids to get their elbow away from their body, it seems to help them roll that fretting hand over the top of the fretboard. I've got kids who try to play w/ their palm stuck up against the back of the neck, their fingers laying flat (doesn't work). How do you get your kids to have their fingers approach the fretboard from above? Thx!
Hi Bill! It's so nice to network with another music teacher! Where in the world are you messaging from? I'm glad that we use the same exact sticker system so that communication will be easy ;) As far as the elbow goes... I think I was trying to keep things front-and-center for the camera, but usually tell the kids to think about their wrist. I tell them to keep their wrist relaxed and unbent. At 3:54 you will see I do angle the hand towards the nut to make room for G7, which I will stress over and over again with my students (I am teaching a new batch of students because I just got a new job). We will get to G7 next week. Wish me luck! I will keep the elbow idea just in case the kids need to hear that. Thank you :)
Thank you for this very clear and easy to follow tutorial. I can now do the progression slowly. I'm going to work on making it faster and smoother. Love your channel!
Loved this lesson!! Thank you for going so slowly with teaching how to place my fingers on the frets. I'm just now learning how play and having trouble with finger placement and this video has helped me so much. You are a great teacher...and i should know, because I am a teacher.
You are so amazing at teaching! I'm a late learner... 41 years old now. My son even said "I wish my music teacher explained things so well! I feel very at ease watching you. Some other youtube teachers go through very quickly, but you are really comfortable to follow!
Hi Amanda! You are not a late learner at all! According to my RUclips analytics, you're right in the middle. Many of the viewers of this channel are 55+! So you are one of the young ones ;)
New player and your bids are a big help. Maybe cause you teach youngsters😀 I am musically clumsy😊 so I keep shadow playing the progression so my wife does not go crazy😀 when I get it down then I'll try to learn a song Thanks for posting these.
I just subscribed and I really like your approach. I currently play guitar but my new Ukulele is so light and fun. That even at age 70 I think I can learn enough to entertain others
I think this is it... Best one I've seen! perfect for a guy with chubby fingers that makes strings go dead!.. I will watch this for several days, weeks! until I get it! THANK YOU! :)
I love your lessons, thank you so much. I wish I could see your thumb placement better for the chord switches. My toughest switch is from C to G7 and my thumb want to slide to the front a bit.
Hi Bernadette! I stumbled upon your channel whilst I was looking for RUclips videos to teach myself to play the ukulele. Being someone who is absolutely a newbie to the instrument and everything related to it, you've lighted the way for me. Your chord progression video makes learning so fun and breezy! I like the way you teach - you speak like I'm having a one-on-one class with you. You're now my go-to online ukulele teacher. Thank you!
Very good, helpful tutorial. I am in same position as another of your RUclips subscribers in that I am trying to learn Ukulele at age 70 in retirement. Been practising for one full month. It is more difficult than I expected.
even though these are basics and i knew them, looking at your wrist help keep mine from being in a bad thumb position. I had my wrist contorted but made the right sounds from notes. watch the wrists!
Please do these cords backwards as well as forwards so you get use to to doing cords different directions sorry I didn't see C-Am-F-G7 classes I just bought a ukulele this past year I enjoy your classes Thanks for being here for all of us
This was very helpful. I get a lot of buzz n’ thunks... lol . Hopefully no more. I have a really difficult time with B chords in particular... have you any special tricks for those?
I liked the short piece you played when reviewing the Kala Uke and watched carefully so when my daughter came today I could show her how I am progressing and play it. THEN I come here later and you actually show how you play it lol. Any way she is impressed with my chord progression. Thank you.
Hey Bernadette , my mom and I are really enjoying your videos. We are learning a lot. I have a great idea for the new year! I returned my ukulele and brought a guitarlele! I would love to see you teach how to play the guitarlele videos. I'm sure you can get your hands on a guitarlele. I think it would be cool to see more instructional videos on how to play chords, finger pick and easy songs on the guitarlele. You could do a few reviews of what guitarlele you think sounds best etc.,,, anyways happy holidays and happy new year! I brought my guitarlele on Sunday and after watching a few videos on RUclips and playing around with the A and D strings, I wrote a song on Tuesday morning called The after Christmas song! 🤓🙄😜🙏🏼💃🏽👍🏿😎 Thank you! JoyRoy
Love love love your way of teaching. Look at my uke, no not yours mine. It's like you could see me haha. Seriously tho, picked up my first uke last week and thanks to you I now know and love this chord progression. Thanks heaps!
What a great little video Bernadette! Thanks for sharing it with the world. I lead a monthly Strum Along here in Austin Texas (which we publicize through our Facebook group SAUCE South Austin Ukulele Community and Events). I’ve taught a few beginner classes but have a hard time getting everyone together on the same day and time. So instead I’ve put together a basic learn-to-play document with links to videos showing how to hold a ukulele, how to strum, and your video on these cords which I think is the best first progression for a new player to learn. I start each Strum-Along with a few simple 1, 2, and 3 chord songs for new players so they can get the feel of actually playing a song in a group with other ukulele players. I think your videos are always great and they’re wonderful for to help people learn how to play ukulele. By the way what brand ukulele is that it sounds great!
This was useful. I'm here right now in my learning. The hand that is supposed to hold the uke slip everytime and I have to remind myself that I have to keep the mobility to reach easily the notes :) I feel so bad I'm so clumsy lol it fustrates me but I keep doing it and I am able to find the right sounds but I still can't switch quickly
+Fatima Rodriguez hi! 👋 it will take a week or so for the ukulele to feel comfortable in your hands. Just do 20 minutes every day and you'll get better 😊 watch the "how to hold the ukulele" video at the beginning of each practice so that you're learning and reviewing how to hold the ukulele 👌🏼
Thanks again for the help and I'm sorry that the review is taking so much time. Honestly I've been busy with classes, the weather is not good at all last days (weird!), the light was horrible, I wasn't feeling filming inside and I had no one to film me as I review, so I'll be doing it most likely tomorrow, no classes no worries and I'll do it outside like I wanted to, hopefully. Just one question, which language would you like me speak in the video? My English is not good because I gave it up for French few years ago and I don't really practice it. French and Spanish are the languages where I feel more comfotable in but if you don't mind awkward English, accent and hesitations then let me know. Bye! :)
+Fatima Rodriguez hey! Don't worry about it, take your time 😊 Do it in Spanish! If that's easier for you :) I notice that videos look better when I film before 2 or 3pm. The light is so pretty at those times
Thank you for this very interesting video. I am trying to teach my 7 years old granddaughter to play ukulele - which I don't really know, for I am (only) a guitarist .. I'll show her this video and translate your comments. It would have been better if she could listen directly to you, but, unfortunately for the moment, she only understands french.
I have to say: it's clear that she's a trained teacher because she scaffolds/progresses so well. When she said, "don't look at your ukulele, look at me" I knew she was a teacher! [and I was doing exactly what I wasn't supposed to be doing!]. Well done & thank-you

Thank you dear miss. I love your tutorial but I wished you played one song with the chord progression you had just taught.

Your like the music teacher I always wanted! Love this video 😍
You are a phenomenal teacher!! Thank you for hopping right into the lesson without a bunch of chit chat in the beginning!!
Your voice is so beautiful, I could watch this video everyday the rest of my life, it would NEVER get old to me! Oklahoma loves you!

You are the best coach on RUclips !!
One of my favorite C progressions is C, E7, F, G7. It’s similar but the E7 makes it stand out and I really like the sound.
Very nice! Thanks.
Thank you Bernadette for your patient way of teaching 😊
Such a great help! I just started today and I'm practicing it all day. Thank youu so much Sensei. Love youu!

Thank you for this very clear and easy to follow tutorial. I can now do the progression slowly. I'm going to work on making it faster and smoother. Love your channel!
Thank you, this is the instructions i need, LOL. transition between chords is kickin my butt. Great Instructions!!!
Hi Ron! 👋🏼
Glad you liked these instructions :) these videos were originally made for my classroom, but they ended up helping lots of adults! 😊
Loved this lesson!! Thank you for going so slowly with teaching how to place my fingers on the frets. I'm just now learning how play and having trouble with finger placement and this video has helped me so much. You are a great teacher...and i should know, because I am a teacher.
You are such a good teacher, I’ve learned so much from you!

Hey! Thank you so much for your sweet comment and for letting me know that these videos help you! I really appreciate that!
You are a great teacher!❤
Thank you Bernadette. You're a great teacher. Keep up the good work!

Excellent
Thank you!
I LIKE the progression. It feels good. Is it used often in songs?
And she's a great teacher
Great teacher!
Don't worry about it, take your time 😊
Do it in Spanish! If that's easier for you :)
I notice that videos look better when I film before 2 or 3pm. The light is so pretty at those times
You made me feel as if I had a private teacher back in school thank you so much
Oh wow, thank you Joseph!! 😃❤️
