Exactly the same as me. Football obsessed but not really aware of what's happening out in the world. Everything in Germany looked so crisp and tidy on the telly made a real impression.

You have to ask yourself what happened to Italian football. They missed out on the last two World Cups even though it's much easier to qualify than back in the day. And when they did qualify in 2010 and 2014 they couldn't make it past the group stage past teams like New Zealand, Paraguay, Slovakia and Costa Rica.
De Naples and Ferri were also among the starters at Euro 88.

This was an excellent Euro. The competition was still limited to eight teams, which meant that only the top teams were allowed to participate and qualifying games still meant something. Nowadays it's just a pure money making operation.

@Dan Swildens But the Irish qualified, unlike many other teams. It was much tougher to qualify at that time. And Ireland made the quarterfinal of the next World Cup, so it's clear they had a pretty good team. They only got knocked out in the third group game with a late goal. The Netherlands should not even have qualified for the 1974 World Cup, but nobody talks about that. Everyone talks about the amazing football they played at the WC. I guess it was the same thing at the Euro.
@Dan Swildens They did play great football at the Euro 88. Obviously the 74 team was much better, but they should never even have been at that WC.
The atmosphere inside the stadiums was so much better compared to modern day

Many questions here about that dubious German free kick that led to the equalizer. At this time goalkeepers were limited to four steps while carrying the ball. Now it's based on time. It was also more common to see free kicks inside the penalty box at that time. Either way, it was a harsh call and a gift to the home team.

There was no foul. Zenga took too many steps with the ball.
Many years ago, the goal keeper was limited to “four steps” while holding the ball. Now it's based on time. Keepers nowadays also can't collect the ball with their hands anymore. And I never see free kicks given in the penalty box anymore.

@@nicolagianaroli2024 Germany has always done very poorly against Italy. For some reason they never matched up well against them. In addition that Italian team still played a catenaccio style that was common for Italy and most of their players were from the Milan team, AC and Inter. That was especially the case for their defensive lineup.

They barely equalized with italy being the better team in this match on german soil...if italy beat argentina in that semi final..it is probably over for germany..but i kinda agree this germany somewhat has a chance....germany vs italy 90 wc final would have been epic

Too bad the video doesn't show the reason why Germany were given that free kick that led to the equalizer. As I recall, the Italian goalkeeper held the ball too long. Very funny, as it is rarely punished in professional games.

@Osterreich That is clear penalty, don't be silly. if defender dives in the penalty box and don't touch the ball it is penalty, no question about it. Same thing for the penalty given to germany in the 1974 final. The dutch keep on complaining but there is absolutely no ground for such complain
