The rise of airbnb has caused havoc and in some cases chaos in the rental market in Italy and not just in places like Salerno that is close to a very high density tourist destination like the Amalfi coast. In Bologna, for example, university students are protesting that they cannot find reasonably priced accomodation and in the Città Dell'Arte like Florence the prices and rents of reasonably central properties have gone through the roof. The average airbnb in Italy, according to my sources, is about €200 a night and so even if it's only rented for 100 nights a year that's €20,000 . Not all profit of course but even if the costs and taxes are a very large percentage of that it still means that what the landlord would ask for a long term rental of the same property would probably be very difficult, or unapproachable, for the average Italian wage earner. As you inferred new permanent residents will have to become commuters of some sort to be able to balance their budget.
Have you ever heard about Case a 1 euro initiative ? 1 Euro Home. Abandoned old house to be renovated given for 1 euro but with the obligatory to renovate it and live there within 2 years. Look for town as Gangi, Salemi and Mussomeli, Troina.
Yes I have. I have to be honest though and say they have never appealed to me because they are usually shells and require a great deal of work and investment to make them liveable.
Isn't it better to talk with people on the ground? I usually have a talk with building service workers to find free apartments. Not sure if it applies to Italy. I usually get banging price deals, because I think outside of the box. I am sure not everyone wants to deal with public ad circus.
Great topic thank you. Question, can you take leases for shorter periods like 2 or 3 months, and if you pay in advance because you have the money, does that make the land lord feel more comfortable with less need for proof of income?
You can indeed get monthly leases for some properties as I've seen them. I cannot say about the money upfront - that would really depend on the landlord.
Bloody hell! I have a 3 bed apt in Abruzzo with large terrace, and we're lucky if we can get 400 pm, and that will probably have to include the condominium charges, so effectively less than 300. Bugger!
I would not pay a high rent. You're just lining the landlords pocket, and you have nothing at the end of it when you leave. Best if you can get a much cheaper place. Looking at rents in Scicily, the prices are far better out of Palermo. Thanks for the video

It is a good suggestion but I think it really depends on where in Italy you are looking.

What about the 1 dollar houses recently made available in.Italy in quiet villages? Are these any option instead of renting?
umbria beats all !
It's a beautiful place!
I'm sorry about the major price increase
Yes, it's a bit of a jump now for sure!

and in places like Altavilla Milicia it would probably be quieter and more liveable.
Yes they are. You pay more to be closer to bigger cities for sure.
Baronissi?
Thanks for the suggestion!
