These cars are amazing. Their cell crash structure makes them one of the safest cars on the road. Don’t let the naysayers tell you otherwise. I’ve got a buddy who slapped a Mazdaspeed3 Turbo on a Manual ‘16 model with some grippy tires, upgraded swaybar endlinks and some coilovers and he has no problem lapping much faster/bigger cars on the track, and not to mention knocks out 60MPH in around 6 seconds.
These cars got really really good at the end of their life, which is why it’s so sad to see the stigma attached to them.
I should add that I’m a Z/911 guy (I actually messaged you on Instagram offering to let you drive my Z32 TT), and I absolutely adore these.

@@39PSIOnTheDaily A rigid chassis can kill. The car has no hood to have a crumple zone. Crumple zones dampen deceleration forces in the event of an accident. If there isn't anything to crumple, there can't be a crumple zone. I am sure the car retains its shape in an accident, but could the same be said for the driver or their insides if they go from 40 miles per hour to 0 in less than a quarter of a second? Then again, the car's very light weight allows it to stop quickly, reducing the impact speed, somewhat reducing the need for crumple zones.

We had an Edition 21 and a diesel. Diesel not suited for small commutes. Petrol was better but diesel got better mpg, regularly 60 plus. Auto box often complained about by motoring “experts” but we thought it did a good job all considered. Paddle shift available as well as gear lever up down change or full auto. Surprisingly roomy inside and quite nippy. Ours had lower profile tyres and wider wheels than standard and it was fine on motorways. 70 mph comfortable. Reason we sold was the proliferation of speed bumps everywhere. It’s not good on potholes !

Even ended up doing some unintended mud running in New Brunswick due to road closures and detours caused by flooding. It did OK in the mud. One issue is not just any shop can fix this car. They are a strange design and unless you are adventurous and like to do your own repairs you need to have a Smart Center near by. They do have a bit of a reputation for being unreliable and expensive to repair hence I have had to do some repairs myself. Fortunately there are some good Smart forums around that really help.

There is a video by Mercedes where they did a head-on crash with an S-Class. Strange you say about the battery as it's in the front. The seats are reinforced. The steel safety cage (Tridion cell) is designed to use the crumple zones of the other car.

@@stevenlawrie7819 wait, you are right! Then it must have been some other engine component, I don't know. I mean, it happened a few years ago and I only know it because my father told me the story when it happened (it was someone from work), so some information may have been mixed over time and people, but I know that a) it was on a main road and he got hit at about that speed, but was not injured and b) there was something that got launched into the passenger's area.
