Just a fantastic training video. Doesn't get a much better explanation than this. I would add that even though the timing chain components and engine internals look great folks should do a couple more things do to the amount of work involved. As in better safe than sorry. If changing the timing chain assembly every GM tech I know says to AUTOMATICALLY do the balance shafts as well. Also with that many miles always install a new water pump. If it fails after 20k miles or whatever you have to do the whole job all over.
Just wondering shouldn't the exhaust have the black link and intake have the orange link. Colored links on both sides of the chain? Maybe my ocd is just coming out.
Chad, I watch your video on the timing chain replacement, you were very good and precise. The only negative was when you torqued the cam shaft sprockets you said to torque to 22 ft pounds and another 100 as a diy I did not understand the 100. Would have been nice if you went through that torque process. Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Bill R
Think of a circle as 360 degrees. 90 degrees is 1/4. Look at the hands on the clock. At 12:00 the minute hand is straight up at the 12. If you move the hand 90° that puts it at number three. 100 degrees is going to be about give or take where the number 4 is. So when you tighten that bolt, you want to move that bolt about the same amount.
I have one of these engines to do chains on soon and my service data says I need the phaser locking tool that bolts down to the head and locates in the phasers? I noticed you didn't use anything to lock them, maybe it's not required?
I have a 2.2 with close to 300k, Chain kit installed at 245k, still was original chain and tensioner. These are good little motors IF YOU TAKE CARE OF THEM!!!! so change that oil!!!
When you set TDC in the beginning of the video you stated that the cam lobes should be facing up on the number one piston which is wrong. When you set TDC you have to make sure the cam gear diamonds should be facing at the and 2:00 on intake and 11:00 on the exhaust. I don’t know if you redid your TDC but when I saw you install the cam gears I noticed the cam lobes where facing down so idk what happened but people can be misguided if they follow those instructions.
I indeed have 3 cobalts and have owned at least 6 of these engines. I’ve done timing on one of them and can say if you follow this guys steps you will mess up as this motor is an interference engine… you should start on exhaust stroke as your timing marks should be in the 10 and 2 position before taking ANYTHING off. If you look closely at 20:42 you will notice the phasers has changed position by 180 degrees. If you’re new to cars or don’t have a ton of experience I would highly recommend taking it to a professional. Yes it is pricey but it’s cheaper than having to replace the whole motor…good look to anyone that try’s it. PLEASE USE A DIFFERENT VIDEO
When I originally replaced my timing cover gasket I did use an impact drill and turned the balancer bolt counter clockwise a couple of turns. Would that cause any damage?
Hey ive got a 16 equinox 2.4 auto awd. Its showing 3 codes i think, p219a, p0420, p0014, p0013 which is mostly timing stuff, fuel air mix, exhaust. it runs great one trip next time splutters everywere with lose of power until get plugs burning hot or something. Ive definatly gotta get a new hose that goes to use to be a pcv on Valve cover. But can you tell me what i need to do the timing completeley. lifetime warranty parts i dont like when their cheap because it means ill still have to do it again. If you have time id like to know what to buy and a fair brand something to actually last. Also my engine had the tube stopped offf on engine so lots seals and gaskets leak. What seals and gaskets that wont come in a kit can i replace while tearing into that part of the engine and any other things you would suggest changing instead of what i said? Any seals i can get to def needs done. it has abt 200000. people complains abt the 2.4 but ive not had to do anything until now with a lil over 200. ours has been great and we live in the WV mountians so its been used well. I hope you can find the time, Thanks !!!
You could but that one doesn't have all the stress on it like the cam chain, water pump and balance shafts just spin freely so it should outlast the engine.
@@kevandhistoyzz36 You wouldn't happen to know... That secondary chain looks extremely loose like its tensioner is doing nothing. Also, in this video, with the plugs out, his engine looked to spin very freely. Mine is free 80% of the time then gets difficult and makes a click like it's surpassing something. It really didn't make a difference when I took the plugs out.

If ypu notice in video his cam sprockets timing marks when at TDC on compression stroke are facing down and to inside, but video cuts then there in correct spot, this is due to 2.2 needing to be at TDC on exhaust stroke.
Is this the standard 2.4L, as found in late '90 early 2000 model Chevy, or is it the newer Ecotech version? Anyone know. I'm 108 years old I remember these in the old days. 😆 🤣 😂
So I did my wife’s 2012 terrain 2.4L.. how do I know if I have it at TDC on the exhaust stroke and not the compression stroke?
When the cams are in the right spot lobes will be as far away from the lifters as possible. That is TDS for cylinder one.
Best way I've seen it explained is number 4 cyl TDC on a zzp video
I was always told to get new sprockets with a new chain. Cuz the new chain will have slop on wore out sprockets. Cause problems.
The chain is what gets all the ware so many connections places, lay the new one on top of the old one check the size.
When in doubt mic it out
When I originally replaced my timing cover gasket I did use an impact drill and turned the balancer bolt counter clockwise a couple of turns. Would that cause any damage?
good and clear information
Also, aren’t the camshaft-to-sprocket bolts “torque-to-yield” style? ( I.e. bolts should not be re-used? ) or am I mistaken? Please clarify this.
You are correct
A good chain kit will have new bolts and sprockets, guide shoes etc, etc.
Is the torque on the camshaft sprocket torque to yield bolts the same for the VVT vs the non VVT engines? 22 ft. lbs. plus 100 degrees?
