    Thanks so much for this, really helpful. I've been using a very time-consuming way of making videos because I had no idea I could stack (new term for me) clips. I always thought that this would make perfect sense but didn't have the curiosity to drag 2 clips on at a time. Would be amazing of you could drag on more than that but there's only so much a $1,000 piece of software can do with only a free computer to back it up. Seriously though, thank you, this will make my amateur video-making life so much easier and quicker!

    found this video just in time. I am working on a music video for one of my songs and want to use iMovie (free of course). however, one of my ideas is to have multiple head shots of people singing the chorus. any ideas on how to do that? I was thinking Picture in Picture but you can only have the one stack. maybe I create snippets and export then pull that in and add more and export, etc.? great video.

    • @QuincyKane
      @QuincyKane  5 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, you've pretty much got the right idea; I've done this effect before in iMovie, which you can see in this video here:
      ruclips.net/video/pJGjxuEZ860/видео.htmlsi=ISBTj8WmHhcchysm&t=182
      Basically, start with a black backdrop, put your footage on top and select "Picture In Picture", the drag it to the center frame and you will see a cross section; drag your footage to a corner of the cross section and it should lock in place, then expand outward to the edge of the frame.
      Then, you export that out, bring it back into the project and repeat the same process with your other clips until you've filled all 4 corners of the frame.
      Sometimes, when you expand a clip to the edge of the frame, some of the image will go past the edge and be cropped out; not sure why it doesn't always perfectly align, but it's not that big of a deal.
      Lastly, I've only used this technique to show 4 clips in one frame, so if you were hoping to do more, you might have to do some experimenting to figure that out, but hopefully what I've shared will be helpful to you!
      Good luck with your project; I'm sure it'll come out great!

    You are a Legend, thank you for this. Had a Deadline suddently to edit our music video and I knew a little editing from back in the day when I was a Teenager, But didn't how to start again. This helped in the most massive way possible. I will share it soon with you , if you want to see it. Thanks so much again for sharing this information!
    Edit : Quick question, do you know to make the audio re-sync with the video with a button after making a small edit, or any way, if its possible?

    • @QuincyKane
      @QuincyKane  Год назад

      Thanks, I'm glad you found it helpful! And sure; send me a link and I'll check out your video!
      As for "re-syncing" the audio; if you cut something out and don't replace it with something else, everything after that point will scoot forward and happen early. It's hard to explain this over text, but if there was a certain clip I wanted to happen sooner, I would first cut around the clip, copy and paste it, and then put it on top of the original clip. Then, I would make the adjustments on top, so that nothing gets out of sync. If I "trimmed" the clip to happen sooner, I would then need to "drag" the end of the clip to fill in the space, or drag the front of the next clip to fill that space.
      Hopefully that gives you some ideas; it's a little like working a puzzle sometimes!

    • @QuincyKane
      @QuincyKane  Год назад

      You might actually "re-watch" the parts in this video around 6:08 and 14:09; I think some of the techniques I talk about in those sections might help you with your situation.

    How do I record it

    • @QuincyKane
      @QuincyKane  Год назад

      If you mean the video, you just need a camera to set up and film yourself singing or playing along with the song. You can film yourself at whatever location you'd like and do as many takes as you need. Once you have all the footage, you just have to import it onto your computer, and into iMovie.
      If you mean the music, that's a slightly different topic and a little complicated to explain over text, but I can tell you that you will need recording software (ideally on a computer, but there are apps for phones too), and interface to plug in instruments and microphones, and some decent headphones. I'm not sure what gear you have, but there are videos that show you how to record songs entirely on a phone, and there are videos for different recording softwares like Logic Pro, Pro Tools, Ableton Live, etc. I would recommend checking out the RUclips channel "The Recording Revolution" if you need help producing music.
      Hope that helps!

    What should the final Volume of master track of the music should be? Or just leave it at 100?

    • @QuincyKane
      @QuincyKane  6 месяцев назад +1

      If your song has been properly mixed and mastered, then leaving the volume at "100" should be fine. However, you should be able to see the "audio waves" in iMovie, and the peaks of the audio waves will likely be a "yellowish" color, which is safe, but loud. If you turn it up any more then that, the peaks of the audio waves will turn red, which means you're clipping, which is too loud and will distort your audio. As long as your audio isn't hitting red, you should be good 👍

    • @fettiiiosama
      @fettiiiosama 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@QuincyKanehey thanks for responding… one last question… what’s better for the master track Foreground or Background?

    • @QuincyKane
      @QuincyKane  6 месяцев назад

      @@fettiiiosama Ok, so are you asking if the music should be loud in the "foreground" or quiet in the background?
      If it's a Music Video, the Song should be basically full volume, but if it's a video where someone's talking, or something else is going on and the music is supposed to be in the background, then you have to turn it down pretty quietly; it should be noticeable, but not distracting.
      I don't know if that's what you meant by your question, but hopefully that helps.

  • @iamstacs
    @iamstacs Год назад +1

    Me and imovie have been going head to head 😂 I would line up my mp3 with the camera audio and in the time line it's perfect... but soon as I mute the camera audio and play the video with the actual mp3 there is a lag... so everything is aligned perfect until I mute the camera audio to hear the footage play with the mp3

    • @QuincyKane
      @QuincyKane  Год назад

      Hmm, so are you trying to sync the mp3 with one long clip?
      If so, you'd wanna listen through with the mp3 and video unmuted for the whole song and make they're in sync to the very end. If they're not, it might be a slight tempo change, or an issue with the frame rate of the video.
      If they are in sync, then it should be fine when you mute the video; the lag might be iMovie processing the video, so you might restart the software (or your Mac), make sure you don't have other programs running, and let it play through a couple times.
      The lag might also be an illusion; sometimes when you mute the video audio, the mp3 audio can look kinda weird at first, but you adapt to it after a while.
      If your video does have cuts rather than being one clip, then you may be able to adjust the alignment for the clips where it seems out of sync.
      Anyway, I hope that helps you find a solution!

    I am 63 and I am going to try to use iMovie.....excited! I play guitar and sing...so I am hoping to sing a song and have myself sing, and also do harmony with myself, and maybe add another instrument (ukulele) ....is this possible?

    • @QuincyKane
      @QuincyKane  2 года назад

      Awesome! There's a couple ways you could go about doing that...
      1) You could "Pre-Record" the audio; for example, if you have a microphone, you could record yourself playing the guitar in Garageband, then record a separate track singing, and then record more tracks singing harmony and playing other instruments. Balance the volume of each track, and then export (or "bounce") all the tracks into a single audio file (usually an mp3).
      Then, you can get footage of you performing all the different parts, and edit just like I demonstrated in the video here.
      2) You could do it all in iMovie; iMovie allows you 2 video layers and 3 (technically, even more) audio layers. You could video yourself performing each part, but you'll need some kind of metronome or beat to keep you on time. You could put your "harmony" video underneath the video of you playing guitar and singing (just make sure they're in sync). I you wanted to add ukulele, you could "right click" you harmony clip and "detach audio"; this would move the audio down to the audio section, and then you could replace the "harmony" clip with a "ukulele" clip.
      This method can work, but might not be as "elegant" as pre-recording the audio; and you would have as much control.
      There are other possibilities, but they're tricky to explain over text; I would encourage you to shoot a short little 15 - 30 second song and do some tests to get more familiar with the tools you have available and how to make them work.
      Hope that helps; good luck!

      The footage was captured on my DSLR camera, the Canon T3i. The music was produced in Logic Pro 9, and I bounced out an mp3 track to use in iMovie.
      You can use just about any audio file with iMovie, so if you create a track in Garage Band and bounce it out as an mp3, you can use that track in iMovie.

    These tutorials seem helpful but I am an actual beginner and SO many details get overlooked assuming I already know how to do something..how did these music just appear there? 2:16-2:55? where did that come from, I honestly do not understand ,,Magic?

    • @QuincyKane
      @QuincyKane  2 года назад

      You can't use iMovie without FILES to edit; this includes VIDEO files and AUDIO files.
      To IMPORT means to put the files INTO the program you're using. After you get your footage, you IMPORT it from your camera to your computer, then in iMovie, you just click "Import" and find the video files on your computer and select them.
      Now, you can't make a music video with MUSIC; this tutorial is assuming you already have music and you just need to learn how to make a video with it. The music I used was a song I recorded myself with a software called "Logic Pro"; this software allows me to record or program guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. I recorded all the parts, did some editing, and exported the final product into an audio file.
      Just like the video files, you click "Import" in iMovie, find the audio file on your computer and select it. That's how you get music into iMovie.
      Now, if your making music videos for other people's songs, you just need an audio file of that song. If you want to make music videos for your own songs, you first need to learn how to RECORD, EDIT, MIX, and MASTER your own songs first.
      You will need what's called a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation); Macs come with a free DAW (just like iMovie is free) called GARAGEBAND, so you can start with that, but you can buy more advanced ones like Logic Pro.
      Then, just start looking up videos like:
      What Studio Gear You Need to Get Started in Recording
      How to Record Guitar in GarageBand
      How to Record Vocals in GarageBand
      How to Program Drums in GarageBand
      How to Mix in GarageBand
      And whatever else you can think to look up. A great resource for learning recording and mixing is a RUclips channel called THE RECORDING REVOLUTION. I've made a few tutorials about recording and mixing as well; you can find those here:

      Anyway, I hope that helps; let me know if you have anymore questions!

    • @QuincyKane
      @QuincyKane  Год назад

      I mean, not really; if you've practiced the song a lot and you've practiced to a set tempo (either with a metronome or a recorded drum beat), then you will be consistent every time you play it. Even if you don't play it "perfectly", it will likely be close enough that it will look in sync when lined up with the audio.

    Could this be done with imovie on an iphone 12?

    • @QuincyKane
      @QuincyKane  3 года назад

      I'm afraid I don't have any personal experience with the iPhone version, but you could shoot a short test video and try out the methods shared in this video and see which ones apply. Either way, if that's all you have to work with, I'm sure you can still make music videos!

    • @QuincyKane
      @QuincyKane  3 года назад +2

      @@comicbookninja5268 That would make it challenging; maybe you could make a different project for each instrument, get them in sync with the back track, and bounce them out as a video. Then, bring those videos into a new project, and just cut on specific beats in the song so you can swap out different clips. I hope that gives you some ideas; like I said, if that's all you got and you really wanna make music videos, don't let the limitations stop you!

    • @QuincyKane
      @QuincyKane  Год назад +1

      @@Occ_okeosisii So, when you record your video, you have to play the song during the recording and sing along with it; that way, when you go to edit in iMovie, you just match up the Song with the Video's Audio, then turn down the Video's Audio.
      If you have footage of yourself singing with the song, but you're having trouble syncing it up, you have to do a little bit of "fishing". Find the section of the song you're singing, and look for a SNARE hit or a CYMBAL hit at the beginning of the section; find the same hit in both the Video AND the Song. Then, cut at those same hits and match them up with each other and everything should line up.
      Again, at 0:43 I talk about filming yourself performing the song while it's playing through a speaker, then at 3:01 I show how to get your footage in sync with the song; try watching that part again and following along with your own footage.
      I hope that helps; let me know if you have any more questions!

      @@Occ_okeosisii I'm not familiar with Capcut, but what I can say is either software is probably good enough to get the job done, so it's really just a matter of which one you like better.
      I'd say do a couple test projects in each one and see which one works better for you, then focus on getting better in that software. That's the most important thing; being comfortable and familiar with the software you're using, and the only way you get that is by spending time making stuff!
