I remember one of the other videos argued that regular cds won't work. They said it required writable dvds because those contain silicon. The regular cds and DVDs that aren't purple, are plastic mass replicated products which are pressed, not burned. Silicon was argued to be the "game changer"

I worked at a company which build the machines to manufacture CD's/DVD's neither the ordinary nor write/rewritable ones contain silicone.
They use a thin layer of metal which is been sputtered on as a reflective layer as well as a light-sensitive dye for the (re)writeable ones.
We experimeted with all kinds of metals for the reflective layer though, copper gold platinum you name it we tried it, silicone was none of them though.

About cd .. .. If you have a CD player and do no longer need it, you can take out the ejection system. Thing is: if you put an LED (or two in reverse) on the motor and operate the eject mechanism (open, close, open, close), the leds will light up. And yes, there is another motor in the middle, but you will need to spin it a bit faster. The nice thing of the eject system is that it has gearing in it (See Rob's previous video about making your own, 1 to 128 ration).
The CDrom can be used to create a capacitor, not very spectacular.
The best use I know of for a CD is in the garden, hanging (dangling) from a rope, to scare birds away.

@@scotttovey Yes :D I'm currently studying if it might be possible to make portable AM rectenna to power 1,5v FM / Mp3 player... Biggest issue seems to be sourcing genuine low voltage UHF/VHF/RF diodes for cheap. Those good old germanium ones are nearly 1€ a peace + shipping. The CD actually might work well and be better with "spider coil" configuration. But I'm also going to use some LC magic, so I will try some dark green or dark grey (Mn-Zn) toroids to get more power.

You can use clear lens LED's in this configuration and read a small voltage but it would take literally millions of them to make any usable power.
They incorporate non--reversing diodes in REAL solar panels to keep storage battery power from from backing up into the panels at night discharging them. If this happens, the solar panel will emit light in the infrared spectrum. LED's work basically the same way but with visible light.

You could possibly buy a load of CDS from charity shops and sell them on eBay then buy a Solar panel from the profit 👍

I did a small experiment with an old cd. Take a few zena diodes, connect them in series and keep them on a cd in sunlight. Then connect your multimeter in DC mode to the two ends of the diods . You will note rising power when the sun light increases. Check this and see for yourselves. If this does not happen, then pls comment here.

It is an interesting concept, shame it doesn’t work. I have seen so many videos and thought to myself it couldn’t possibly work. Electronics are an amazing thing and I think it’s great that people waste their time to learn something doesn’t work, that inspires the brain to find a method that does work.

It really is sad that this has to be explained, but we do live in a world that P.T. Barnum would have loved. In his time a sucker was born every minute, but today they are born every second.

LED's connected in an array form a solar cell, the opposite is also true.
ie Push current through solar cells and it gives light, you will however need a specialist camera to see it.

Remember Tesla Patent for receiving radiant energy? U.S. Patent No. 685,957
Maybe u could use those shiny CDs as top plate? But u would need to connect shiny surface to the wire. Tesla said that top plate should be metal covered with some insulating layer.

You appear to be the most professional, trustworthy and with a natural passion for basic Physics/Science, so very sad that this is minority in mainstream education. There is lack of awareness that the simple ability to to inspire learning in children and students of all ages is THE IMPERATIVE. Do you think it's simpler to buy inexpensive solar panels than attempting to make one with old cd.s,I too thought why are they missing the most important simple point about connecting? Any bit of solid plastic in-between must for a perfect Non Cercuit, it seems like some kind of clicking con.Are people really so gullible, it never ceases to amaze.Thank you and keep up good and valuable work.

To use a CD as a solar cell you have to hook a wire to the aluminum layer. Perhaps by drilling a hole inserting a wire and using a conductive glue to attach it to the CD. Then attach the wire to the positive terminal of a super capacitor and the negative terminal to ground. Photons will knock electrons off of the aluminum and they will be replaced by electrons from the ground flowing through the super capacitor. Charge will probably build up on the plastic of the CD and have to be bled off through some sort of electrostatic motor or electrostatic conducting material back to the earth ground. Useful work energy is taken from the super capacitor it’s self. All in all it would work just the same and be easier to just use a sheet off aluminum foil. This is by the way an old Nikola Tesla patent.

The best way to turn a CD into a solar panel, is to buy a solar panel and throw the CD in the bin. You could sell the CD, but it's worth about 20p so you'd need quite a lot of CDs to afford a solar panel. It's more effiecient to bin it. You could use them as reflectors opposite to the solar panel, but my God what an eyesore.

If it sounds to good to be true, by all probability it isn't.
But the people always want to see the next new wonder, the next new, easy and sparkling answer to questions not asked.
Because an easy answer, as wrong as it may be, is for some always preferable to really having to do something

I love the old video where you cut the top off an old car battery and hundreds of dry cell batteries fall out. I laugh when I think of some poor sap getting battery acid all over to discover there were no batteries inside. Then cleaning up the mess.
