@immortalperser misleading... but still right. What you said is true, and it happens in music in general. People are starting to get tired of some clichés. I started to get into the whole Metal scene recently and one of the things that annoy me the most is that i see the same motifs and themes over and over and over again. Metal covers, in general are, as Wilson said, absolutely tasteless. Just look at the "In Waves" cover (Trivium). Now that's a decent album cover.
I love Steven when he laughs. Though it doesn't happen very often, does it? I ALWAYS love him anyway :) Those two are a great couple, can't wait for their album to come out!
I feel an album cover should reflect the bands lyrics and music within the album. It just wouldn't be right to have a death metal album with positive and uplifting images on an album cover.
@Soilwar Well, two thirds of that dream has actually come true. Steven Wilson and Mikael Akerfeldt are releasing an album next year under the project name Storm Corrosion. Should be released in April. It's not very Opeth and not very Porcupine Tree, something neither of them have ever done they said. I'm curious, if you're looking at how different Opeth's Heritage and Steven Wilson's Grace For Drowning sound, this could be a very very interesting release...
@EITrollo I guess they're right about the cliché though, but so many bands are also amazingly good at what they would call cliché metal. A band that springs to mind when talking about cliché of hard rock and metal is Airbourne. They're rock & roll to the point it seems silly, but then again, they're so fucking good at what they do. So I don't mind. I think it's a bit offensive of Mikael/Steven, considering both these men are on Roadrunner, a label with many of these 'cliché' rock/metal groups.
What they mean by the term 'cliche' in Metal, is the way that a lot of Metal bands advertise themselves all-round. In that respect, I agree with these 3 legendary musicians.
@lasoogneypubes He was most likely in a bad mood that day, whenever he's in a bad mood on stage you can tell because he becomes incredibly awkward. On the other hand, I saw him on his recent solo tour and after the concert he sat on the edge of the stage talking to fans and answering question for an hour and a half. All musicians have their off nights, you most likely caught him on one of those.

Yeah I totally agree with the whole metal cliche thing, the dark clothing that befits the musical style can seem intimidating and therefore I suppose people associate metal bands with being tough, and angry and "scary" so that is how they will pose. I think in a way it is a method of keeping metal music feeling alternative and secluded from pop culture because metal bands create a physical facade in photographs that would put a conventional person off.
