Just ordered the Surface Book 3 for Business - 15 inch, Intel Core i7, 32GB, 1TB, NVIDIA Quadro for $3995.99 w/ tax, also purchased the Surface Pen Platinum and the Surface Dial both for $89.00 each.
super late to this video, but im going to college this yr and will need a new laptop! do you think the i5 would do just as well with gaming or is this something only the i7 will be able to support?
As someone who used to be an all Apple user who swore up and down that they would never use a Windows device, I switched to Surface and haven't gone back since. The Book has a premium price for a premium design, and you can find similar specs in other machines. But what you won't find is this same versatile and powerful design. Worth the price to purchase a Surface. As for the pen, they used to include it, but my guess is they found not EVERYONE used the pen and took it out which dropped the price by $100 so people who wanted the pen paid the same price, and people who didn't would save some money.
I'm upgrading a SurfaceBook 2 to a Book 3 which is due to arrive tomorrow. I use them for design work, video editing, illustration and animation mostly, gaming being an added benefit. My main two concerns with the Book 3 are the battery drain issue that was in the Book 2 not being present in the latest version. Basically, for the uninitiated, the Book 2's battery will still drain under heavy load even when plugged into an outlet due to the power supply not providing enough juice to power the device during those stress periods (especially gaming). Why MS shipped the Book 2 (and the OG Book which suffers from the same problem) with this flaw is beyond me. Research suggests this has been addressed in the Book 3 which is great but we'll see. My other concern is the total lack of an AMD option also mentioned in the video. I can't think of a good reason why there isn't a AMD powered Book 3 especially with the great strides that AMD has made over the last few years. Ryzen 4000 support would have been nice considering how much these devices cost. Having options is good but apparently MS didn't think so in regards to chip choices. That sucks, flat out especially when MS is rocking AMD silicon in the XBox One and the Series X. Anyways, I decided to upgrade anyway even though I'm not thrilled with Intel these days because in short, there simply isn't a creative device on the market that's quite like the SurfaceBook series, that can also game full stop. Expensive, yes, but I get a lot of bang for the buck and it's really awesome for my creative workflow. Great video. +1
Does this have the same issue as the book 2 where the video driver disconnects randomly? And the fix is to either restart, scan for new hardware in device manager or undock and dock again? And does the battery charge hold up with the gpu output that the SB2 had a problem with?
I can’t speak for the video driver problem but the charging issue should definitely be fixed as the 15’ now has a 127W charger in the box as opposed to a 102W one.
Great review! 👍 Are you planning to review the 13inch version as well? I'm curious about the cooling and battery life difference between the two models.
love the video, such comprehensive details especially the webcam portion!! one thing though - i can't help but notice your gaming performance is a lot lower than what it should be. for example, im able to run GTA 5 on my SB2 with higher graphics settings, and get higher frames. i think you might have missed setting the laptop to high performance mode while being plugged in + setting the game exe to run with "Maximum Performance mode" in the Nvidia Control Panel (not the same as GeForce Now). and, to get even more frames for free, plug it into an external monitor! this will help the laptop stop using its internal video controller and free up processing power to focus on the games. i get about 10-12 extra fps in the new CODMW with this.
I also have the surface book 2 and I can't really play gta 2, it gets laggy, and very low fps, call of duty crashes, very frustrating for me. I have a question, are you able to run gta 5 smoothly on your surface book 2 with no issues?

Can you please test thermals? On SB2 there was an issue that caused SB2 to downclock to 0.4Ghz. MS said they fixed it but that's not true at all, it still happens it just took a little more time than before. Can you please run AIDA64 stress test for an extended time? (CPU and GPU at once) like 20-30 minutes? Thank you! (MS replaced my SB2 twice but I had the same issue every time).
I got one myself a while ago. It's pretty good for gaming. I have a huge problem with the audio. I tried 3 drivers, reset the device and a ton of other things but the audio coil buzz was still there. I even got a replacement and the replacement had the same issue. It's a great laptop but this really makes me angry. I'm going to stick with it because I found a solution. Using a usb c to headphone jack adapter works and Bluetooth headphones work too but I will never get a Microsoft product again. Great review by the way.
I'm having weird graphical issues on my Surface Book 3, 32GB Ram & Geforce 1660 Ti MaxQ. Games will display green and purple squares all over the screen and then crash. What graphic driver did you use for the gaming tests? There's still no Game Ready driver available, only an Nvidia Studio one from way earlier this year! Maybe my Geforce GPU is just broken?
Good review of the SB3! I have the SB2 and love it. The best computer I've ever owned. I do quite a bit of productivity and some gaming. The Surface Book design is great for that mixed use. I very much enjoyed listening to this review. You do a great job, your video and audio quality are fantastic, and I look forward to watching more. Thank you.
How is the Quadro-version when it comes to gaming? I have heard different opinions where some claim it is even better than the 1660-version while others says that it it worse.
Quadro cards are not for gaming. For example, I had both the Razer 2070 and Razer RTx 5000, the 2070 performed better in every way, but it did crash more (BSOD). The quadros are rock solid because it's used in Engineering and machine learning at a 10-20% decrease. I did preorder the SB3 1660 ti though.
How well do you guys (my fellow commentors) think newer triple A games like AC Odyssey, RDR2, Fallen Order, etc..will play on the 15"? Im an artist/heavy gamer, but I know absolutely nothing about this stuff😅. That being said I am hoping to be able to play games like Cyberpunk 2077 & Baldur's Gate 3 on this pc if I choose to buy it.
@@Belgarath777 ohh that's good, im going to order this charger for my surfacebook book 2. Hopefully this will prevent the GPU from power limit throttling. I assumed the surface book 2 could only handle upto 95 watts of power.

Surprised they didn’t make a matte black surface book. :( that woulda been sweet. I really like the surface books, but since I’ve moved to an ipad pro as my only computer, I can’t justify the price of the surfacebooks anymore. I owned the 1st gen w/performance base, and it was pretty neat.
Can anyone help me make a decision? I'm typing this on the original Surface Book. I want to upgrade to a fully loaded 15 inch model but I'm wondering if I should get the Nvidia GeForce version or the Quadro version. I'll primarily be using it to edit 4K footage, but might use it to play games in my spare time like Halo 6, Dragon Ball Z Fighter, World of Warcraft, The Elder Scrolls, Assassins Creed.
You'll want the 1660ti version for the games and it should be enough for 4k editing. Go watch the video from TheUnlockr who reviews that model as well and references this video.
When you pre-order the device, the pen is included! Excellent gaming review, thanks. I was wondering that the drivers must be really off, the performance should be better then that, don't you agree? At least 10 more frames in each game and what's wrong with GTA, only 30fps?
@Christopher Adrian I currently own the 256gb surface book 2, I'm thinking of upgrading to the surface book 3. Are you getting the surface book 3 256gb version or the 1 terabyte configuration. Which one you thin is better the 256gb or the higher ones?

Thanks for the video! I usually play by connecting my laptop to a 4K TV with an USB-C to HDMI adapter. Can you comment on how would that perform with the Surface Book 3?
can this play mobile games in tablet mode? or is it supported?
Is he playing on steam or the Microsoft store?
I like your sofa man, where did u buy it?
Can SB3 display show above 60hz refresh rate? 😲😲😲
Good review. You may have already answered this in a prior video, what do you use to hang your headphones?
What name of game in 9:45 pls???
Was that the 15 inch? I'm debating between the 13.5 and 15
How’s the game for photo editing and video editing?
Finally a gaming review for the SB3 w/ GPU!! yes, they are people out there that want a 2 in 1, pen support and play occasional game that needs a better GPU than the intel crap lol awesome vid!
It's definitely perfect for me. But money 😭
Smh.
I'd like to see you review the evoo gaming laptop. I am curious on your thoughts.
I very much enjoyed listening to this review. You do a great job, your video and audio quality are fantastic, and I look forward to watching more. Thank you.
Thanks, much appreciated
This prolly does gaming better than del
How is the Quadro-version when it comes to gaming? I have heard different opinions where some claim it is even better than the 1660-version while others says that it it worse.
Quadro cards are not for gaming. For example, I had both the Razer 2070 and Razer RTx 5000, the 2070 performed better in every way, but it did crash more (BSOD). The quadros are rock solid because it's used in Engineering and machine learning at a 10-20% decrease. I did preorder the SB3 1660 ti though.
@@justshady Was it a big difference when it comes to fps and high resolution?
@@MAXstyrka Yes, because you have to consider the RTX 5000 is pushing a 4k 60 Hz oled display, while the 2070 is HD up to 300hz.
@@MAXstyrka 10-25%, the RTX isn't worth the buy though. Go with the new Razer 2080 super
This is a fantastic review, thank you!
How well do you guys (my fellow commentors) think newer triple A games like AC Odyssey, RDR2, Fallen Order, etc..will play on the 15"? Im an artist/heavy gamer, but I know absolutely nothing about this stuff😅. That being said I am hoping to be able to play games like Cyberpunk 2077 & Baldur's Gate 3 on this pc if I choose to buy it.
can we play with touch support
do you think it would be possible to connect oculus quest to it?
Are you playing games on native res 3000x2000 at high settings? Your performance seems very lower considering how powerful 1660 is 🤷♂️
Playing at 1080, like I meant ion and upcoming driver update should sort things out
Can you test if the 127 watt power supply works with the surface book 2 and if it will prevent it from power draining when gaming?
That's been tested by others. No longer a problem.
@@Belgarath777 ohh that's good, im going to order this charger for my surfacebook book 2. Hopefully this will prevent the GPU from power limit throttling. I assumed the surface book 2 could only handle upto 95 watts of power.
How to get this Wallpaper ??? 2:21
In my country the pen is provided
Could you provide link to the driver we need? I tried downloading "1660ti notebook" driver and it said it couldn't download it. I'm assuming I selected wrong one.
how do I update to the latest GeForce drivers ??
Just wish they made the trackpad bigger
Hwat i sthat mouse can you giv eme the name? please and thanks.
Asus G14 would probably be a way better buy. $1450 with a Ryzen 4900HS 8C/16T, 2060 MQ and 16Gb of DDR4 at 3200mhz.
When you pre-order the device, the pen is included! Excellent gaming review, thanks.
I was wondering that the drivers must be really off, the performance should be better then that, don't you agree? At least 10 more frames in each game and what's wrong with GTA, only 30fps?
Christopher Adrian that’s really weird. Maybe it’s a country limited promo, I’m from Portugal.
Most probably He is playing at native res 3000x2000 🤔 with high settings
That's why the fps very low
@@iLoGiKZ not in the USA. I preordered mine the week before last and had to buy my pen from Amazon.
@Christopher Adrian I currently own the 256gb surface book 2, I'm thinking of upgrading to the surface book 3. Are you getting the surface book 3 256gb version or the 1 terabyte configuration. Which one you thin is better the 256gb or the higher ones?
@@kwesiwilliams1188 Hey bro did you order the 15'' version or the 13"" and if it is the 15"" version, did you order for the 256gb configuration or the 512gb configuration or more? Just trying to see if I should get the 15" 256gb configuration or 512gb and to see which one is better. I currently own the surface book 2, 256gb config.
Buddy can you please run a SSD speed check?
Can it do VR?
Could you connecr the xb1 controller to the 13 inch model?
cool review yo! You convinced me!
Hey could you review the MSI GS66 Stealth 10SE-039 w/ RTX2060 and i7-10750H
this reflects stuff like crazy
Is there a way to update the drivers
I agree different color would’ve been nice but there’s just nothing like it 🤤
Yup, would have loved a black or dark blue color like the Samsung Book Flex, but at least this color I'm assuming hides fingerprints much better :-).
@A RamadanThat's your opinion. Neithet of us said it didn't looked premium and it can still look premium with different colors. Also, some professional reviews have stated they think the Flex looks premium, and I agree. Everybody has different opinions. Welcome to Earth.
@@Belgarath777 that Flex has a beautiful look to it. Different colors, gives consumers different options which is always a plus.
Dbrand?
@@shadowroses5 the last thing I want to do is put a skin on something especially like this that might interfere even slightly with thermals. Also, skins don't look as clean to me as a complete change of color, but I realize that's subjective.
Can u review the galaxy book flex
i have surface book 3, having a hard time finding an android emulator that works. my favorite is nox but it wont run. same with memu. blustacks kinda works. any tips?
Great review, thanks buddy
Was the laptop plugged in while gaming?
Oh yes
