  • Hi guys, after this video was filmed, Smokey destroyed that plastic colorful spinning toy. I quickly removed it because I don't think it's a safe parrot toy. So, definitely not recommended!

    My husband and I love watching your videos. You are the most thoughtful and mindful bird owner I have seen. You always consider what Smokey’s needs are and what is best for her. I love watching her as she interacts with her environment. I wish she had a live stream from her aviary to check in and watch her. She is adorable 💖 we look forward to all of your videos. Thank you.

    I have an idea for you. I found it extremely helpful to buy toys for toddlers, since big parrots have the same intelligence. For example, we bought those big colourful plastic screws which my parrot unscrews now every day

    This is what every bird owner should do for their bird. it's what birds deserve. I see so many accounts on IG that just feed sweets and have no enrichment. It is sooooo sad. I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL.

    I love Smokey ' s aviary and all the foraging opportunities. Where did you purchase the aviary itself and how do you get Smokey out there without her flying away? BTW, my grey is far too spoiled to open his own almonds. He only likes the slivers he can pick out of my granola cereal in the morning!😃😃😃

He's 34 years old so I'm not sure he will learn the new foraging toys I'm about to get him but I'm sure hes going to love the aviary I'm going to build him now. He never learned to fly though but he loves to climb.

    Thank you for sharing your videos and foraging toy ideas!
    I have a chestnut fronted Macaw & a Quaker Parrot. And I have several homemade activity centers that they enjoy.
    So, a few questions for you.
    If you have severe weather changes from sweltering, freezing, storming, rainy and windy throughout the year, would you set up your aviary inside? I do have plenty of space inside with a super large backyard. In addition I have a semi-protected carport that I set up with huge plants for the spring, summer & fall. Would that be a better location?
    How important is direct sunlight for our birds?
    Hope you have a great Christmas!

    I love the Parrot cage setup videos and I love yours. ! The video on feathers was very helpful. I was able daily to get a feather from each side like you said and zipped in a pencil holder. My lettuce being worried about the salmonella. What's funny my Grey showers and saw Conures bathing in water bowels. So he tries to fit into the same bowel which how do I know what he is doing since he can not fit. The foraging toy the plastic one with blue tabs . I have it but how do you clean the blue one.

    I have 1 year old African grey that doesn't love roudybush pelets that much he throws most of them on the ground what can I do to fix that? He loves to eat all seeds and nuts and I would like to somehow use that as a good foraging treat. He has the clear and blue pully foraging toy and a clear foraging wheel. What is the best foraging toy that I could get for him that would fit the seeds and nuts through? And also maybe a toy that could incorporate the pelets. Thank you

    I have a green cheek conure and she is a few months old. She loves coming out of her cage to sit with me on the couch and just be around me. I try to get her to chew on her toys while she’s on the couch with me but sometimes she tries to bite my hand and is obsessed with trying to get onto my shoulder. I know she is probably trying to be in control and that is why she’s biting and trying to climb on my shoulder. I never let her up there though. Is there something else I can do to not get her to bit or try to control me or is it something I just have to work through with her because she’s still a younger bird? Please make a video for me. My husband and I love your vids and it would be so helpful! Thankyou 😊

    question, i got a female grey 2.5 years old she is traind and playful and conected to me, yesterday i got a new 3 month old male grey and brought home, he also is hand traind and comfortable with humans, they are both toghether in the same big cage and 90% of the time they are out on the top of the cage, my question is, would they become wild if i pair them up? people started telling me that putting both toghether is not good and that they will become agressive, is this true?

    You did a video a while back where you mentioned learned helplessness. I just recently brought home a 5yr old macaw that is afraid of everything...including his toys and fresh food. He shouts at himself in ways that I would never speak to a bird. We have had him a 3 weeks now, and he has learned to say nicer things to himself...but I would appreciate any ideas on how to help him find his bravery. I just feel sad for him...I have set up several play areas for him. He is unclipped, but barely even spreads his wings at all. He also doesn't preen himself very well...any ideas for helping him learn to be happy again would be welcome. He does like me, and my children...though he isn't fond of my husband.

      @wingsNpaws  6 лет назад +8

      The process of rehabilitating a bird like you described can take many, many months. However, you shouldn't let that discourage you. Don't go for quick fixes because if you want to earn your bird's trust, you have to accept that it's going to take time, perhaps a lot of time. Always approach your bird slowly, calmly, and speaking very softly to your bird. Offer him his favorite treats every time you have a "play session" and hide treats and food inside foraging toys. Use foraging toys that are easy first (drill holes into his wooden toys). Through foraging, he will learn that he has control of his environment and can make decisions for himself. This will help build his confidence. Invite guests to offer him treats as well when they are over, this will teach him that humans aren't there to hurt him.

    • @yanusanders7686
      @yanusanders7686 6 лет назад +5

      Melissa Skaggs It just takes time. It's like a traumatized human, after a long time of abuse you can't expect it to behave normally after such a short while. be patient. Try to find out what's its favourite treat and use it whenever you two are very close to it learns to trust you. be calm and make sure to respect your parrot just like you would respect a human. you can't force them to do anything

    Hi. New sub here. My husband and I adopted a 3 year old Africa Grey. She was intended to be “my” bird but she bonded to my husband and won’t have anything to do with me. Is this irreversible? My husband likes birds, but doesn’t like to touch or interact much (he likes to admire them from afar) but yet she chose him and my husband hates it. Can a bond be broken with reasonable actions?

      I don't think you can use cat food but try to use more fruit then seeds and that might help
      Also have you looked on chewy.com it will deliver the pellets to you

    • @wingsNpaws
      @wingsNpaws  6 лет назад +4

      Cat pellets are not safe for your bird. I would suggest giving veggies, fruit, and look into sprouting seeds. Sprouting seeds is pretty easy to do and makes them a lot more nutritious.

      Look at what they eat in nature. If you have at least 3 different kinds of fruit/veggies per day (e.g. day 1: banana, apple, kiwi/ day 2: grapes, pears, tomato etc...) and little seeds and a boilt egg maybe once a week, your bird will be very healthy. variety is the key, pellets just make it easier

    • @cockatielnation5425
      @cockatielnation5425 6 лет назад +2

      I cook my bird a mix of brown rice, quinoa, lentils, finely chopped kale, carrots, apples and dried cranberries. I flavor it with cinnamon and red pepper flakes. It keeps in the fridge for several days. When I serve it to him I mix it with 1/4 tsp of red palm oil and heat it just for 10 to 20 seconds in the microwave oven but it could be heated briefly in a pan also. I do make absolutely sure it is not too hot when I give it to him.

    Hello you are great with Smokey.. my question to you is my bird Pebbles will be 3 the end of this month. I have had her since she was 4 months the soonest the breeder would send her because she wasn't weaned yet. But within the last year she has been making the mating noises when I rub her and drops her wings. I read in October I think its when they are in heat.. so before and after that time she was doing it..i thought it would pass but she still does it.. I'm not sure should I not rub her when she does that. She only does it to me and I'm a female. But she doesn't really let anyone else in the House rub her.. I'm so lost with this. And she makes her food come back up to while doing that.... so many different sites are saying and having different suggestions... just thought I would ask your opinion because I have been watching yoh a while and you really seem to be invested with Smokey as I am with Pebbles... thanks in advance for any advice..

    • @wingsNpaws
      @wingsNpaws  6 лет назад

      That's definitely sexual behavior. Smokey did that back then too and would do it if I pet her back for too long or during certain times of the day. Some people would suggest not petting your bird at all. I didn't stop. Instead, I wouldn't pet her for too long and offered head scratches more than petting. If she showed any signs that it was triggering or was about to trigger a sexual response, I would stop and send her right back to perch.

    You're one of the first I ever watched regarding parents. I had an African grey in the early 2000s who was stolen. I rescued a 14 year old female which I am a female. My bogey was a male of course.
    Bogey never had any attitude issues fears Etc not to mention that is a female and he was a male. I love African Greys so when she came along there's no way I was going to turn her away ever. I have finally been able to purchase her a new cage. It has a playground on the side my house is not that big I'm moving furniture out that I said it and just to give it to her I don't care. I'm more concerned on how to get her to move into the new cage I do not want to stress her. She was rescued with an Amazon and I believe the original owner and old man had purchased Laura my African great for the Amazon Bobby who is a female. To keep her company Bobby is 44 years old Laura will be turning 17 this year. But the man died his sister took them she was afraid of them put them in a tiny cage. Through them and it put him in a room and threw food on them. I do not have Bobby I was not the original rescuer a dear elderly lady rescued both of them and already had a male African grey. And she thought that she could meet the two African Greys but they were not compatible. First of all Laura was 14 and he was only Jen 10. my question is do you have any suggestions I do not want to shock my darling her and I have an excellent Bond she sets with me while I paint I'd let her Clump all over the house which she is allowed to do I keep it clean so she knows the house is hers she runs the roost. I still you know she knows when she's done something and she has to go back into her house that's what I call it as her house that's her safety area but I do love this new cage and I just don't want her to be shakhter anything I've ever spent a small fortune on this cage and it is much larger than her other cage. Lord does not fly nor does she ever want to fly my house is big enough for she could fly but she will not. When she comes out and flap their wings and does her thing and then she just wants to walk she klomp. She loves to klomp. Any suggestions yes she is spoiled rotten as is my chihuahua they have some secret Pact
