My great Grandfather was an usher at Olympia and he would take my great aunt and my grandma to games, wasn't old enough to remember my grandma but my aunt was a huge wings fan and got me into the sport at a young age. I vaguely remember the 02 team. So many memories at JLA even though it was an outdated arena us fans didn't care. Going to miss JLA. Time for a new chapter at LCA
I'm a Penguins fan, but this building is really special to me. We played 2 Stanley Cup Finals there and won a Stanley Cup there. I love the feel the Joe had, even though I've never been to it, I still get a special feel even when watching at home. It reminds me of our Melon Arena. So much history in one building. I will miss it, but I also can't wait to see the new arena.
Greatest games in Joe Louis Arena regardless of sport include Esa Tikkannen's miss in Game 2 of the 1998 SCF; Fight Nights at the Joe between the Detroit Red Wings and Colorado Avalanche in 1997 and 1998, Steve Yzerman's blast past Jon Casey in Game 7 of R2 of the 1995 SC Playoffs against the St. Louis Blues and the Bernard King-Isiah Thomas duel in G5 of the 1984 NBA Playoffs First Round series between the Detroit Pistons and New York Knicks.
let me guess the city of Detroit is paying for this pizza arena even though it's an impoverished town? makes me sick how we let this happen in the name of sports
Kevin Crabtree only about a third of it is city funded and realistically it will bring in money for the city. especially now that the pistons are in city limits too
dude Comerica park is named after a bank, Ford field after Ford Motors/Ford family. That's how arena's are named now they wont change it so get over it.
It replaced a beloved rink and made its own memories. And like the Olympia it will be missed.

FAREWELL JOE LOUIS ARENA 1979-2017
So many great childhood memories
I'm going to miss that place. I'm just happy I was able to watch a lot of awesome games there growing up and even got to play there a few times.
Hockey is life!

Sad to see The Joe go, but as one chapter closes, another one begins in 2017 with Little Ceasers Arena and hopefully brighter times for the Red Wings

Well, it’s all gone now
unfortunately
I have a weird feeling their fans are not gonna show up to games much until they're at least average. You gotta remember that they are pretty spoiled.
Us clocking is the last thing anyone worries about. Watch the video again.
RUclips Sucks look up attendance stats for all teams over all years. that will never happen. maybe in chicago, but not detroit.
let me guess
the city of Detroit is paying for this pizza arena even though it's an impoverished town?

Let me guess...you think Detroit is an isolated case of that...
Kevin Crabtree
Yes, billionaire Ilitch could have paid for the new stadium but that's not how it's done. Lots of bonds.
I'm pissed about this and I don't like Detroit
