  • Maybe a new series from Old School Forge where we take a look at some of the basics and starter types projects and see what we can do to make them better, faster, or both

Practice. Like everything else. There's an old story about dental students going into a bar (not close to the dental school) and cleaning up by betting people about drawing simple figures in a mirror. Of course, they've spent hours working in a mirror.

Love the videos man! They're great to watch as someone who's currently preparing to start, it lets me learn a little something and also is just entertaining. Having a little 101 series would be great!
Good luck with the show man!

Little sales tip. Make a few of the ones that don't go past 180 and sell them for $5 and hang the ones that go past 180 beside them and sell them for $7. People will almost always buy the better looking one for a little more.

  • @CorrieBergeron

The comment below about a bending jig... Yes. That's how you ramp up production so you're making $50/hr. The S-bend is hard to get symmetrical, especially working quickly. Use a jig.
Plain w/a curlicue $4. (6 for $20, no need to make change.) Decorative twist, $6 (4 / $20). Remember, you pay taxes on every dollar; you only get to keep half.
"Completely hand-forged, no jigs or special tools, imperfections are part of the unique charm " - THOSE are $10 each. And you make money from your better practice pieces.

I had the same issues, and found that doing the tapers and tip scrolls on both ends first, caused me far less drama. I also use the hammer and the edge of the anvil to cool the scroll tips,(too stiff in the middle to do that much dipping in the slack tub),it saves a heat sometimes. I price them $3 ea, 2 for $5, 5 for $10 if I have a hundred or more on hand.

  • @hendersonhandmadeironwoodc8881

great video,I would like suggest for keeping the tapers even you can draw down the first taper and hold where the taper begins along the near edge of the anvil and mark the end of the taper on the anvil face with a piece of chalk, this way when you draw out the taper on the other end you have a way to guage it's length and match it up...anyway,I really enjoy all your videos and they are alot of fun to watch so please keep em come n,have a good one man

I use a lot of garage door spring making S hooks. You put out the word that you use garage door spring and soon you'll have bunches of it. Anyway because of the makeup of the steel in the spring you need to work it a little different and the practice is good for working any taper. Always draw out square. You compress the steel that way. If you draw out round you'll end up with cracks. To keep the end from splitting first establish the point, working at the far edge of the anvil point the very end. Then draw out your taper back as far as you want. It's not a bad idea to get a measurement on how far your taper goes up the rod then you can copy it on the other end. Now turn the square into an octagon, then that into a hexadecagon (16 sided polygon.) By the time you have 16 sides on 1/4 inch rod you are pretty much round. Make the finial or rat-tail and before making the hook quench the finial so you can tap on it without collapsing it.
A nice 1 or 2 dollar addition to an S hook is a short section in the middle squared off and twisted. Hammer on dude.

By now you are experienced enough to plan your heating times, because they don't take a lot of heat get your stock cut to length and place a heap of them in a tin, whilst waiting for larger jobs to heat get one in the fire and do the taper on one end and perhaps the small scroll then throw them into another tin, when they are all done swap the tins around and repeat, less time waiting for jobs to heat, more production.

Chandler, why don't you ever write back, u were the first blacksmith I watched on UTUBE. It was scary on how similar we started out. Almost identical from the harbor Frieght anvil, the channel lock tongs and most of all the rail road spikes. It's a shame cause if written, emailed and called you for ads ice and u NEVER RESPOND. I want to respect you but I'm finding very hard these days. I know u went through some rough times and I'm happy and grateful that u seem to be doing better. That's from the bottom of my heart. Remember though, we all have issues and it should be the Blacksmithing that brings use together. Since November 17th, I lost my only grandmother, my house burnt to the ground and had to start all over on DEC 11, 2015, totaled my 2014 4-runner 2weeks after that, then list my oldest brother on April 10th, 2016. The man was my idol and actually introduced me to your page. I was amazed on how similar we were a like. We're fights and don't give up and aren't willing to think

Right, you dont want to make J hooks, you want to make S hooks. nice job. Also, use the edge of the anvil to taper your points. Works for me better than the face of the anvil . thanks for sharing

I live in NY AND WOULD LOVE TO WORK W/ you, maybe u could care less but my attitude has slowly changed on that thought. I think your a great man as well a a smith. Just don't forget about the ones who make this happen for you....., I'll end it w/ this, I have literally watched everyone of your vids and your playlist is dubbed" 🍀CHANDLER DICKINSON- bad ass blacksmith 🍀." That how I think of you and I'm sure I'm not the only one. A bit of advice though, don't forget about the ones who got u to where you are. Stay cool

When I do my S hooks I do both loops at the same time by heating the center out a bit and tapping on the scroll on the top to close the loop. If your curves are even you will get two even loops that used the same amount of force to close them. Nice hook though.

Dude i got a question. Ive been stock removal knife making for over 12 years now and want to start forging. What would be the cheapest way to obtain an anvil? I dont want a silly piece of a railroad either. I know some people start that way but if its possible id like to find a decent sized anvil and strap that mother to a wood stump and then go from there.

    • @johnfraser8158
      @johnfraser8158 8 лет назад

It's hard to find one and when you do you will have to pay maybe 2 dollars per pound of anvil at least. You can look on Craigslist but other than that you will have to go to people's houses or metalworking shops maybe

I have a rack in my kitchen. S-hooks are what I hang my pots and pans from. A few came with it, others I bought from a local smith (not having a force myself). Every time I look at them I smile a bit, because I know they were forged by a craftsman, not punched out by a machine.
