    Thanks for the great tutorial. For someone looking to make a start in the field these kinds of tutorials are great. A video on what you would need for a minimalist starter smithing setup would be fantastic if you'd consider it!

    Thanks, these videos have really helped me with my smithing skills. I just hit one year of blacksmithing and your videos have given me so many ideas and so much help in making my work better. cant wait for the next video :)

    Another well done vid. When I was taught how to do an 'S' hook, I was told to make a 'C', Put it into the vise and then twist 1 1/2 times to get an 'S'. I also do the small loop finials on the ends.

    I really like this style of video your doing. It is extremely easy to follow what your doing so it can be reproduced. I hope that in the future you do some more complicated projects. I would especially like to see you do one for tongs in this video style.

    Super well done, I have not seen that TV show you mentioned. I prefer RUclips style content, more one on one style. Anyhow, Love the hook, I am always hung up on both ends being even, I have a pile of them, I wouldn't give away. Your style without a curl on the end, look better when they are not even size. I think that is a great way to do it and keep it less production looking... Good Job, Thank you.....

    Great video!! Quick question does the glow of the hot steel not affect your eyes? I know when I cut with a torch I have to use dark goggles to be able to see after I'm done cutting.

      The metal doesnt get bight enough during the day, can be a little bit in the evening. Unless you are forge welding or really doing some hot work, its not going to bother you. However, I do normally wear some light sunglasses just because I have sensitive eyes.

    I met you several years ago at the Georgia Renaissance Festival. After your "S" hook demonstration I hung around and asked you a bunch of questions and, seeing how nobody else had inquired about it, asked if I could buy your demo "S" hook. I was expecting to hear a price of $75 but was pleasantly surprised when you sold it to me for $5. It's sitting on my desk right now. I have a few questions. If you are on the clock how long does it take you to make one "S" hook (without all the pausing for explanation) and how many could you knock out in an hour? Also do you offer beginner blacksmithing classes?

    • @purgatoryironworks
      @purgatoryironworks  7 лет назад +3

      I can usually do 20 in an hour with no real issue. As far as classes, we do them but our main business has gotten in the way of a lot of that. We are working on housing for classes, so just watch the FB page and thats where we announce

    I really love these videos! As a newbie, I find it so refreshing that you take the time to really explain the process in laymen terms. Also, did you fabricate the flue and hood above your forge? I've been trying to find pipe of a large diameter, like what you have, with no luck. Any chance you could demonstrate that process, if you ever have the time?

    • @purgatoryironworks
      @purgatoryironworks  8 лет назад

      Hey Hobby. Thats a bit of a tough one. That pipe is actually the -outside- of a 12 inch smoke pipe. Most smoke stacks have an inner part and an outer part to prevent fire hazard. I simply ripped out the inner part and used the larger outside piece because I have no direct contact to anything flammable. The hood was a little tricky and we can surely try and get a video out for that.

    • @mr.hobbytime4577
      @mr.hobbytime4577 8 лет назад

      Awesome! I thought about repurposing an old 12"X10" rectangular stainless flue, but I wasn't sure if the shape was conducive to the proper flow. I've been told that venting forges is a lot different than venting a fireplace. Do you think that a rectangular pipe would work? I've got about 50' of it.

    • @purgatoryironworks
      @purgatoryironworks  8 лет назад

      Oh yeah, shape really doesnt come into play unless you have bends

    • @purgatoryironworks
      @purgatoryironworks  8 лет назад

      Yeah, it should work fine, Jay's forge in Andersonville was square pipe

    first off awesome video thanks for sharing your craft. What is the point of wire brushing it? is it to remove scale or prepping it for finish?

    • @purgatoryironworks
      @purgatoryironworks  8 лет назад +1

      Hot brushing removes more scale and burnishes the metal as opposed to fighting it when its cold. Lots of stuff that comes off when its hot is a pain to get off when it cools.

    Do you have any videos of your fancier style s hooks? I have a video of how I make a smaller, whimsical style that wife uses for her necklaces. But, I'm always trying to find a way to mak each one a little different than the last.

      These are normally what we call a loss leader. We sell them for 5 bucks so anyone that wants one (ie little kids) can get one.

    shouldn't you stick the iron right on the edge of the anvil, so any time you hit too close to the tip when forging a taper, the hammer head only touches air and not the anvil, and of course the hot iron. forging a taper in the middle of the anvil is high risk for hitting the face of the anvil.
