  • In this video I will present a simple S hook with detailed instruction for the novice blacksmith. An S hook is a good first project that introduces several basic skills.

    I know this video is several years old but, I just saw it. This was an excellent presentation, John. You explained each step clearly and methodically. As a retired math teacher, I know the value of this approach and not simply assuming the students or viewers could fill in the blanks. S-hooks are an excellent beginners project, they are simple and yet, I've found several ways to screw them up. And if I absolutely destroy a piece, the loss is negligable. I have been tempted to create a jig to make each piece identical, but where' s the fun, and the learning in that. I'm loving all your videos!

    Another quality video from Black Bear Forge. I really love how I can take notes along with the videos. This man is awesome and truly a hero to back yard blacksmiths everywhere. Thank you for being our master blacksmith.

    Guilty of not being good at this Sir,
    I seen the lesson before by several teaching but I just want to get other products made such as tongs and making chisels for my building of my forge.
    Today I need 4 S hooks for my use, so I will cut 6 rods 6"and 2 rods 10" so I can make 4 as shown to hold back in the 4 building stages as you taught Sir, and 2 longer , and 2 matches.
    I do try to improve, now have made a set of tongs for 1/8 rod , I can do it better and safer.
    Sir a great learning lesson today that I need to polish up, Thanks you Sir

    Your boots look like my favourite hiking boots... are they Keen Targhees?

    • @BlackBearForge
      @BlackBearForge  6 лет назад

      They are keens, but I'm not sure which model. Plus they have been retired and replace with a different pair of Keens since this video

    Great basics overview. Good advice. May I offer any advice to you about recording your voice over?

      I figure you're helping me, least I can do is offer some advice back... Seems like you'd be recording on that phone device you have there. But the recording has a low quality "telephone" sound. I'm guessing, but you may be recording in "space saving" mode. Look for terms like CD quality, 44.1KHz, or "best" when you're recording for video. It'll bring out the S's and T's and help your voice stand above the roar of the forge. I hope it helps!

    Where do you get your bar stock?

    • @BlackBearForge
      @BlackBearForge  5 лет назад

      I buy from a local supplier. They sell just about any size mild steel in 20 foot bars. Any larger city will have a supplier, if not ask the local welding shops where they buy their materials from.
