Nope, you want whats called "flaxseed oil" . Technically, they are the same oil but linseed oil is processed wit ha bunch of solvents and other nastiness. Flaxseed is cold pressed and is what you want to use.
Great video! I have a question unrelated to this video. I am a wood worker and over the years have bought a lot of wood chisels. some are the socket style, but they have been hammered on, with out the handle and are all rounded over.I was wondering if you might do a video on how to repair them. Thank you !

I made a knife out of an air scissor blade. It is very hard steel. I have tried everything except heating it to drill a hole in the tang so I can put a handle on it. What suggestion do you have for me to be able to drill a hole in the tang? I was told that if I put heat to it that it would burn up instantly because of the high carbon content in the steel.
No, its not going to burn up. Bring it up to non magnetic temperature and bury in ash or vermiculite, let cool overnight. This will allow you to drill it. Then follow a standard high carbon steel hardening and tempering process to make it a good blade.

I had a smith tell me to use the curve of the leg vise to put the curve in the tongs. Works good.

I'm interested to see some tonges made. particularly, how to heat treat them so get the spring action. Love the videos.
If you leave the reins of the tongs rectangular about 4 in back then you will get a fair about of spring without heat treating.
Most tongs are never heat treated, the spring comes from the thickenss of the metal

Is that stainless? I'd be amazed if it was with how easily you shaped it, though guess machining work is different to blacksmithing.
Nope, this is just a mild steel, but 304 isnt too terribly different to work under. Now if get get into D2 and the like, phew, like hammering rocks

No, the only thing would be a decarburization of the surface but even that isnt going to affect the look.Getting it too hot will though!

What would you recommend for someone starting out to make to start
Most smiths start by making a wall hook with a twist. The techniques used are essentially the foundation of blacksmithing.
