    Great video! So funny that you and your piggies prefer the same color of pepper haha. 2 out of 4 of my guinea pigs need to gain weight for the moment so I can't cut down on the carrot but I love that you mentioned how high in carbs it is :)

      My piggies will only eat the yellow ones lol I have no idea why, but if I try red or green, they won't touch them. One of my females will occasionally eat the orange kind, but they're such picky little critters ☺

    Brilliant video, one of the best I've seen. You take such caution when it comes to your guinea pigs diet and I really like the fact how educated you are on how to look after them. I can tell your piggies are going to live for a very long time. :)

    THANK YOU so much for this video! And all of your videos. I'm an adult who has always wanted guinea pigs, and I'm getting my first skinny pigs later this summer, so I've been trying to make sure I'm as informed as possible, and I'm really grateful for people like you who make such great videos. It's really so helpful.

    For bedding I use baby blankets, folded in half, or a fleece blanket.
    I also only use dawn dish door when washing his blankets.
    Then put a dryer sheet in with it, and it keeps it sold but no strong smells.
    I just got a guinea pig corner potty pan this month.
    Cosmo is learning.
    I use the fresh world bedding in it one scoop.
    Then I put his hay on too, and as he eats it he poops.
    Still trying to get him to use it for peaing to.
    But he will learn.
    I also found out that if I let him lose in my room to run.
    He won't have potty issues, like getting plugged up.
    Because he can run and jump, and exercising keeps his muscles active, the he runs and plays, this keeps them going potty regularly.
    As well as safe food.
    I am going to use my a Brita tonight for his water from now on.
    I thought about this and felt I should, because so much stuff that can cause him discomfort.
    Any ways it's best to really care.
    I had a guinea pig back in 1969 and I only have him fresh veggies every other day.
    And he never had stones, or any health issues.
    He moved with me when I got Wed in 1979.
    He lives a year or so then died.
    But he was a healthy happy boy.
    God Bless You all for taking such good care of your piggies lol.

    • @skinnypigs1
      @skinnypigs1  8 лет назад +1

      +Peggy Nance If he is peeing on the blankets, what is absorbing the urine? You don't want to be letting him get sore feet. If you are using fleece, you need an absorbent layer underneath, it is sooooo important. When drying the blankets, never use a dryer sheet, they shouldn't have anything with scent and dryer sheets leave a residue on the fleece.

    This is very informative. It's so helpful for people getting piggies. If they can get it right from the start it saves on money and distress later on. Also, you can't leave out the tomato, the cutest thing I've seen is Barnaby waiting for his tomato in your morning routine :P

    ughh I got a pig from a guinea pig rescue and the lady was quizzing me on how I take care of my two other pigs. I told her I feed them each about 1/6th cup of pellets a day and she said "NO. we leave pellets in 24/7!" and was really adamant about it. she had 50 pigs in her shelter and has been running it for years, so I assumed she should know what she was talking about. but I do feel like having a constant access is too much. and its just a waste. I'm trusting my gut and going with 1/8th to 1/6th a cup.

    • @skinnypigs1

      +Sam Wyatt I feed 1/8th of a cup to each piggy. Some people are stuff on that they should always have pellets, which never makes sense to me.

    Hi Abby, LOVE your channel. I have learned so much! I always want to be an informed piggy parent. I do have a couple questions if you don't mind. Jethro is approx 3 mo old. He has zero interest in any fruits. I've tried strawberry, raspberry, and blueberries so far. Is this normal? I know you say fruits are a treat but is it ok not to give any? He also has zero interest in carrots, baby or regular ones, cucumbers, or grape tomatoes. He only seems to want red or green leaf lettuce and enjoys all colors of bell peppers. That is it. Should I be concerned or just keep offering these other items? He gets KMS alfalfa pellets, a mix of orchard grass and botanical hay(that seems to be his preferred mix) and filtered water. Any advice, recommendations, or input would be so greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

    My guinea pigs live in a hitch so I use hay for bedding(not just hay I use carefresh too) they eat the hay way too quickly and I can't afford to keep refilling their hutch. They have an unlimited supply of grass tho :) Soon I'm gonna be building them a c&c cage so I won't have to use hay as bedding which means they'll have more to eat! Can't wait, I hate that they live outside its too cold

    I never thought of filtering water, I think I'll try to get one, would be better for us humans and the pets. How often do you have to change the filter for the Brita? I do my best to give my piggies the best diet possible. They generally eat better than most people lol. Thank you so much for making these kinds of videos, you give people(including myself) guidance for their piggies well being. :)

    Our foster guinea pigs just had 3 babies a few days ago, they are already eating hay and veggies. Do you know when the mother can get pregnant again? We don't want any more litters so, I need to seperate them but don't want to stress them out.
    Also, do you think 3 weeks is a good separating time fore the babies too? I don't want babies having babies.

    i owned a rescue guinea pig for 6 days about a year ago. His first owner fed him mostly alfalfa, timothy (when she could afford it) almost one carrot a day, huge handfuls of lettuce and unlimited Wild Harvest pellets. He was on the diet for 6 months. Poor little guy died at the age of 1.

  • @peggynance6510

    Ps I think your right about over feeding them to because of left over food all day, they can pee in the food dish or poo and if not removed quick can make them I'll.
    Plus if He seems really hungry.
    I give him a few to help till morning.
    Just being safe is so important.

    • @skinnypigs1
      @skinnypigs1  8 лет назад +1

      +Peggy Nance Does your piggy have hay at all times? Just wasn't sure what you meant about him seeming hungry. Hay should be in the cage at all times in a large quantity and that would be what they eat when hungry, while veggies and pellets are measured out.

  • @guineamaniac678
    @guineamaniac678 9 лет назад

    Ok, a few questions. How do you spread their veggies over the day, like what time of the day do you feed each veggie? also, my guinea pigs don't seem to enjoy hay as much as i would think a normal guinea pig does. The hay is green and nice and fragrant (oaten hay) so its good quality, but my guinea pigs don't eat that much of it and they seem to be eating their favourite bits and leaving the rest on the litter tray base. Is this normal or should I be worried?

    • @skinnypigs1
      @skinnypigs1  9 лет назад

      Emily 111222333 I would switch to a different hay and see how they like Timothy or Orchard grass. Sometimes pigs prefer different tastes, just like us :)
      I give lettuce, tomato and pepper in the morning, carrot in the afternoon and then cucumber at night.

    I love your videos, they are brill. Just a bit of input though...I feed cucumber and lettuce most days and have never had a problem. Always solid poops! If something has high water content I don't think it's that that causes an issue, it's no different to them drinking water. They just wee it out. Same as us I think! :). Also great for those that don't drink much water! X

    • @skinnypigs1
      @skinnypigs1  9 лет назад

      Hannah Bassett That is good they have always been solid, but when a piggy has had soft poops here and many others I know, stopping the lettuce and cucumber makes them firm up. The lettuce and cucumber can add too much water to their digestive tract and can also cause bloat in some cases :)

    Hi Abby, I have a quick question to ask you if you don't mind answering for me. I give my guinea pig 1 Oxbow vitamin C tab a day, and I was wondering if I can also give her 1 urinary support tab also? Or is that too much to combine a day? Also do you even think the vitamin C tab is worth giving to her at all? She gets the veggies you listed in this video every day so should that be enough for vitamin C? Thanks!

    • @skinnypigs1

      +skinnypigs1 Thank you so much for responding. I am glad to have an expert to ask. :-) One more problem I am having. The pigs are only eating what I call the "fluffy" part of the hay. In your videos, it appears that your pig eat most of the hay. My pigs pull all of the hay out of the bin, eat the fluffy part, leaving the majority of it on the floor of the cage, and beg for more. Any advice? I am giving them Timothy hay from the farm store if that's important. Again, thanks so much.

    Hi I just got my guinea pig in December.
    I love him so much.
    I have put him in my room with less chance of drafts, and I see him a lot.
    I give him only one thing perday because he is 3 months and a half.
    I was told by the owner of shop, not to hi e babies a lot of veggies or fruit, causes gass and their tummy then hurts.
    So I love my guinea pig, I am 63 and my cat and dog all get along together.
    But I never leave him or them unsupervised.
    I am finding how social and friendly they really are.
    Mine gives me kisses all the time.
    Plus does the pop corn dance lol.
    And he even purrs like a cat.
    I been working on potty training him, and coming to me.
    When we cuddle if he had to go pee.
    He runs up to my war making all sorts of small sounds and that tells me hurry mommy I got to go pee lol.
    Anyway loved you editorial.
    Where can I get the bottle of stiff for mine to stay healthy? Please and I only feed spenage.
    I heard lettuce can kill them if it's romaine lettuce.
    So I go with spenage, and only one kind of veggie a day because mine is still a baby.

    • @skinnypigs1
      @skinnypigs1  8 лет назад

      +Peggy Nance Romaine lettuce does not kill guinea pigs, you can feed that but I much prefer red or green leaf, you just would never want to feed iceberg.

    is this a good daily diet??:
    around 7:00: about a cup maybe less of kale, 2 baby carrots, about a 16th of a green bell pepper, and 1 raw green bean
    around 3:00: 1/8 of a cup of pellets
    around 7:00: same as the morning
    hay ALL day
    it would be very helpful cause i want my pig eating healthily.
    thanks!!!

    • @skinnypigs1

      +walkermommy Kale is high in calcium so should not be fed more than once a week and not too much at a time. 1 baby carrot a pig is more than enough, shouldn't feed them more than one per pig a day.

    I am feeding my guinea pigs "Kaylor of Colorado Guinea Pig Food" and it has small seeds without the shell, carrots, bananas peaunts and timothy grass (of course the pellets too) is this food good for them? I watched a recent video of yours saying that they should NOT eat seeds...

    • @skinnypigs1

      +Ice_Tiger To be honest, that might be the worst pellets ever. Peanuts are not something guinea pigs should be eating, seeds aren't either. They need plain pellets, timothy ones. Oxbow Cavy Cuisine is a great brand or Kmshayloft Timothy Choice (Online store).

    • @skinnypigs1

      Most important part of the diet is hay, should always be in the cage. Veggies I scatter around or cut up into smaller pieces as well to ensure it gets spread around. For pellets I use Sherwood Pet Health brand now so the pigs only nibble on some here and there throughout the day and everyone gets enough.

    I just adopted a new baby (5 months) guinea pig and she will not eat hay I have tried bluegrass, Timothy, orchard grass, and alfalfa but she is not eating any. She eats her KMS Hayloft pellets and tons of lettuce, bell pepper, and cucumber. I have checked out her teeth they don't look over grown or long. My grandpa was a vet and I had him look at her yesterday, he said she was fine. I just want her her to eat hay so I know she is healthy. Any chance you could help?

    • @skinnypigs1
      @skinnypigs1  9 лет назад +1

      If she wasn't used to hay, could take awhile for her to start. I would keep it in her cage at all times and soon enough she will start. When I first got Seymour he had never been given hay, so he didn't know what to do with it. It took him a long time to finally start to eat it and then took a year to eat a good amount. I would just keep a pile or timothy and orchard grass mixed in the cage for her at all times.

    In a guinea pig cage should there be two food dishes each having 1/8 of a cup? or one with 1/4 or just one cup with 1/8?

    • @skinnypigs1
      @skinnypigs1  9 лет назад

      Makenna's Pets You can use however many bowls you want. If you have a pair, you can have two bowls with 1/8th in each cup or if the pigs share fine, one dish with 1/4 cup.

    Red green or orange is safe.
    But I now only give Cosmo one kind of a veggie, or fruit a day.
    Because he's a baby.
    Here is the list of foods mine likes.
    kale and spinach, cucumber, bell peppers red green and yellow,
    Pea pod peas, mine won't eat cherry tomatoes.
    Baby carrots I found if I soak them in fresh water, they don't lose the fresh look of new ones.
    Also I set it our my good to get room temp for a bit. Also I give mine honey due Mellon, and Apple, white grapes, as a treat I give banana, as a very little treat, and fresh raisins.like one.
    I only give these in training and maybe once a week, the banana tinny peace, or raisin.
    I also but a good from pet store with a treat in it that's good for there teeth.
    If he's out and I rattle his bag he runs to mommy lol cause there good to keep his teeth trimmed.
    I also have toys cat toys with bells inside, and he lives to play with them.
    I also take a big carrot once a month as a you and put a yarn needle through it and take a long slice put of too, and tie it to the too of cage.
    I won't let him have it all.
    But it's a good way to keep him having fun plus he only gets so much then I remove it
    I also make a lot of my own toys put of toilet paper rolls and paper towels rolls.
    I just made a tunel for him I used a hot glue gun and only in the center of each one.
    Then for him going in it with a treat.
    Now he runs through it like so fast.
    I also wanted to pass along this ok.
    My pet store owner said don't ever use a guinea pig harness.
    They hold the pig with velcro which makes it so easy for your piggy to escape.
    She told me if I went to use one to come to the pet store, and let the owner for your piggy with a dog small one that clips together and no escape.
    I want to might order grass for my pig.
    Then as it grows I'll cut some to give him every so often.
    Also dandelion leaves is really good in the spring for them.
    Good luck God Bless.

    I can't get my piggies to eat their hay!! No idea why, all the sudden, all they want is pellets and veggies but they will eat fresh grass

    • @natalyakolesnik4278
      @natalyakolesnik4278 4 года назад

      maybe cause the hay is dried up or you left the bag open overnight that it got bad but the other reasons is that if guinea pigs step or pee on the hay they will not eat it at all also you may be giving then to much pellets!

    • @skinnypigs1

      Bottle water often has calcium added to it, which guinea pigs don't need extra calcium.

    What is a way to get a guinea pig to drink more water? One drinks 4-6 oz in a 24 hour period and the other only drinks about 3. (He is healthy diet wise I follow your tips)

    • @skinnypigs1
      @skinnypigs1  9 лет назад

      Best tip is having multiple bottles at different locations in the cage and filtering their water. Each pig is different for how much they drink, but you can try those tips.

    I kind of think about it like, I wouldn’t give my pigs something that I wouldn’t eat or wouldn’t be good for me. Like the water, I would not drink tap water bc it tends to be dirty so why would I give it to my pigs? Also, nobody in my family eats cucumber skin bc they’re coated in a wax to make them look nice at the store so I don’t feed my pigs the skin either :)

    So last night I bought a new guinea pig. I introduced my 2 guinea pigs to each other. There was no teeth chattering . Just a lot of purring from my guinea pig Mocha. He keeps chasing her all over. Humping her, and purring The poor thing can't get any time to eat or drink. Because he'll come right on top of her. And then she starts wheeking . And my cage is in my room so I'm getting zero sleep. What should I do?

    • @skinnypigs1
      @skinnypigs1  9 лет назад

      Priscilla Monroe That sounds very normal. Make food easy to get at, have water bottles at both ends of the cage. Hay in a pile. What size of cage do you have? Move the cage out of your room then until they calm down, can take a week or so.

    • @1tashacool

      36in × 30in

    • @skinnypigs1
      @skinnypigs1  9 лет назад

      Priscilla Monroe Minimum for 2 guinea pigs is 28 by 56 inches, so giving them more space will really help them work things out. Biggest thing is making hay and water available easily and at both ends. They will work it out. Are you introducing a male and female? Is one fixed?

    Hi skinnypigs1!! :) about a week ago I have gotten my little guinea pig, Gus a little buddy, Rocko. Haha my dad named him. Anyways, I saw your video about how to introduce piggies and my piggies are still fighting :/ I don't know how long I should keep them separated but right now I have them in one cage (Midwest plus) and I used the divider it came with because I'm nervous Gus is going to get injured ( I have gotten cut because I put a duster pan between them to stop the fighting and my hand was too close) but they are healthy and popcorning like normal :) but I would love to see my piggies happy together :/ every time I do have them together there's a LOT of teeth chattering from Rocko. If it doesn't work I out between them I'm going to get Rocko a separate cage for his own. Please help!!!
