  • This video covers a few common techniques you can use to age and distress scenery for theater, because if we Scenics aren't painting wood to look like wood, we are painting things to look extremely old and gross.
Basically all you need is a DIRT color, like raw umber, burnt umber, paynes gray, van dyke brown... have fun making a mud color! Then make a wash or a glaze with it to put on top of your scenery. Scenery always looks better with a little dirt rubbed on it.
For this video, I used Rosco Off-Broadway Raw Umber, Paynes Gray, and their Flat Clear Acrylic Glaze.

I like how you give the paint colors. I am in a point in my career where I'm interested in changing one of my classes from video production to scenic painting and prop making and I have really improved but need more. Do you offer online classes. I want to learn and then teach my students what I've learned.

Hi! I'm glad these have been helpful. I do have a long term goal of making online classes, but that is years away from being a reality, unfortunately. There are some excellent books out there, though, that you might find helpful. Painting for Performance by O'Skea might be a good one for you, it has great descriptions that are helpful for people less familiar with scene painting.
