Tom Rush is as good a storyteller as he is a musician. It's such a joy to see him perform live.
Many years ago Tom did a benefit concert for a youth group I was working with in New Milford Conn. He closed the show with this number, and we all sang this song all the way home. What a classy and generous gentleman.
Saw him in a small venue in Rhode Island in 1970, I'd been listening to his music a couple of years by then. In my opinion, no finer musician. ❤️
My brother took me to see Tom at the Boston Symphony Hall in 1985 or 1986. Loved it. Just now finding his music again.
we just saw him at Tupelos in Derry, NH a month ago... I was blown completely away... I have loved him for decades and his voice is still as rich and evocative as it has ever been... great show and wonderful performance... Love Tom Rush...
Tom showed me this tuning after a show at a club in Coral Gables, Florida in 1962... and I agree with Erik Dessler. This is a Quality fellow! ^..^
One of the all time greats...
Fan from Australia here!
I've loved him for my entire life. Win, win, win. And, "knife guitar"? Seriously? That's just the greatest thing I've ever seen. To hell with modern artists. Tom Rush has outdone them in class for decades.
Have you ever heard him mention the name of John Prine, in one of his songs; i recall a song, in the 70s, don't know who sang it, but there was a line in it, saying: just like a song by John Prine. paul.labellegolf@gmail.com
He took chances on Jackson Browne (who was very young) and Joni Mitchell before they were known. What a wonderful man! And still his songs effect me so much!
@@willmpet And James Taylor, and Jesse Winchester.

When I saw Tom at Michigan State back in 1973 he played this and he had to borrow a knife from the cafeteria to do it. I think he'd forgotten his slide.
I was there and bought the CD

Listening now in 2024 as poor Texas is being Beryled😢by a weaponized hurricane
Wish I had been there!! TY
Tom Rush still plays Circle of Friends fairly often (maybe once a year), so keep an eye on their listings and maybe you'll get another chance to see him there.

Let's not even discuss Chinese made flouride being dumped in our drinking water and its relationship to Autism (Dahmer and Columbine) Don't wait for the MSM to catch up with all those truths in this CANCEL CULTURE ! We the deplorables.
@@johnarmitage4872 So it's the CHINESE-made sodium fluoride that's causing all this!! I just KNEW they were at the root of evil and not the American companies who sent their manufacturing over there.
Fuk spell-check !
When natural disasters were just
" natural disasters".
too bad his lyrics are not factual as the seawall was NOT in existence in 1900
how bout you just listen to the brilliance and depth of the song, an' just forget about yo' jiveass historical bullshit.
I didn't hear him sing the lyrics referring to the seawall in this performance. (He seems to have got some of the lyrics messed up here.) But I believe the song does have lyrics referring to the fact that there was NO seawall at that time.
So ... what is your complaint exactly?
Oh boy. A little research shows that the original lyrics said Galveston did not have a seawall,, but that lots of folks misheard the lyrics and the version Rush performs here became standard. Sheesh. Who cares?
Is this a real song, did he write it in 1st grade. In so embarrassed for him..sorry
Real song. Sung in churches for generations. Recorded by major artists including James Taylor. Library of Congress.
