    In our latest instrument video, OAE Principal Clarinet, Katherine 'Waffy' Spencer dusts off her Baroque Clarinet aka the 'mock trumpet', to show us the early design before it developed into the clarinet we know today. Make sure you watch until the quiz at the end!

    I broke a spring on that exact key on my clarinet years ago and I never bothered to have it repaired. Elastic bands are pretty much my best friends

    The baroque clarinet has a very interesting sound. I'd say the chalumeau sounds more like a modern clarinet than the baroque clarinet.

      Yeah, rhe baroque clarinet reminds me a bit more of a baroque oboe than a modern clarinet.

    I think clarinets prevailed in the end because they had a much bigger range.
    But chalumeaux still win the medal for beauty of sound.

    How interesting! And I appreciate the way how you explain all these hidden secrets to us so much. As well as you are playing Molter by heart - and so accurately (which must be very difficult on these clarinets).

    What did they do about the break?
    Before the invention of reliable pads and keys, the clarinet was effectively two instruments, each with a range of a ninth or tenth: the low register, and the high register - with a gap of three or four notes between them. Without keys to cover that break, players and composers had to work and write around those missing notes.

    • @Anubis81
      @Anubis81 3 месяца назад +6

      Well old chalumeaux without keys just played in the fundamental register of a ninth. Then the Denners added the two keys to almost bridge the gap. That way only a semitone was missing. Not long after a key was added for the left pinky to reach that missing semitone. Eventually keys were added for ease of chromatic playing until we ended up with all the scaffolding on the modern clarinet, but those original two are still there and are the most important.

    • @JimCullen
      @JimCullen 3 месяца назад +1

      The quiz at the end basically tells us this answer. She says the clarinet was missing the note "B" (which, as a clarinettist, it's fairly obvious that she means B4, reachable only from the upper register by using a key). It may also be missing C5 and C#5 for the same reasons, although there is a single pinky tone-hole in the right hand, so that might help with one of those two notes?

    • @elneutrino90
