    Steely Dan's work is as fresh today as it was during the 70's

    I fell in love with Steely Dan when the first lp dropped. I was 13 in 1970, so much great music. I loved how different they sounded. Every song is perfection.

    Really enjoyed your reaction!! My introduction to Steely Dan in 1972. Amazing to have Do It Again, Dirty Work, and Reelin' in the Years on a debut album!!!!

    “Do It Again”: although heard thousands of times, this song still gives me the same pleasure. Thanks.
    [NB: The accuracy of the connections (for example, in this video reaction: THE DOORS regarding "Do It Again"; 'BREAD vibes' and 'STYX style' concerning certain passages from "Dirty Work") that you make proves that your knowledge of the history of music is true and extensive. This is to your credit and it makes your comments always interesting... and your channel even more credible.]

    Do It Again: without it, we're not talking about them.(also on the soundtrack for the movie " FM ")An electric sitar?! For American rock, quite innovative
    Dirty Work: The reason for David Palmer singing lead(reportedly)--Donald Fagen, at this time, didn't feel confident in his voice. Also, Donald, at live shows, would sometimes have crippling stage fright, and having a second lead singer as backup was essential. History shows this didn't last. On later live shows, the female backup singers would sing " Dirty Work "
    RIP Walter Becker

    • @retroreactions....
      @retroreactions....  26 дней назад

      Perfect song. It sounds so sitar, I wonder why I always thought it was a guitar solo? Wow, well Donald sure looked comfortable the few times I saw him singing live on RUclips. Guessing he got past the vocal stagefright to a good degree. Happy weekend Michael!

    Yeah, my new tablet works!
    Cheers Brandon 😊
    Love your Windows 95 background btw!
    PS: "Another day at the office for them" 😂 Sometimes you are worse than me, and please feel free to accuse me of quoting you out of context!
    I don't like the plaintive vocal of Dirty Work, and the orchestration is borderline slapstick.
    Can I suggest Keep Moving by Madness as a palate cleanser? THAT'S orchestration.

    • @retroreactions....
      @retroreactions....  23 дня назад

      Yipee! Welcome back bud! You KNOW I LOVE to live in the past LOL, and that goes for the backgrounds too sometimes... 😁 Keep Moving now on my list!

      @@retroreactions.... Their two last albums, this one and Mad Not Mad, are superlative in terms of production.
      And thank God, not any song is over (I think) six minutes, most of them adopting the 3 or 4 pop format.
      Bliss!

  • @briangray00
    @briangray00 24 дня назад

    "Bread vibes" I totally agree. I believe Dirty Work was a template for a shit-ton of soft rock ballads, that generally don't measure up.. David Gates actually did manage it...
    There's no way of course that he could attempt all the other genres and nuances that the Dan could pull off.

  • @grahamharley4895
    @grahamharley4895 25 дней назад

    Brandon... Just listened to Led Zepp again. Love Jimmy Page's shredding solos, but it came to me that his work is almost a separate entity as opposed to Gilmour, who's more subtle approach is always integral to the overall musical effect. A comparison would make a good episode and provoke some debate? It almost describes to a 'T' the problems I have in defining 'Prog', and the reason that I like Tony Banks keyboard compositions rather than a lot of more random stuff!

    For me, these songs are far apart in quality. Do it Again hooks you from the first moment and contains that rhythmic style that they became synonymous with. Denny's and Donald's solos are terrific! Dirty Work doesn't grab me. I find David's vocals quite poor and I am eternally grateful he got to sing on only half the first album and nothing more. The sax solo is underwhelming, which is not something you can generally say about Steely Dan when they shine the spotlight on one of the collaborators.

    • @retroreactions....

      I enjoyed DW, but it sounded unSteely on first listen for sure. To me the sax melody seems written simple intentionally, who knows? Thanks for stopping by Simon. You like Calling All Station's closing song?
