I know this isn't a GTA clone. I should of been more specific. I meant it was referred to as a GTA clone when it was released.
Yeah, now I see, if you'd just added that no one would complain. I guess I called it GTA clone too back in the day. Nowadays term clone is more demeaning, like a shitty copy, good example - Gangstar series by Gameloft. Even the latest one is kinda crap and funnily enough, seems to be inspired by Mafia 3.
I'll forgive you for that slip :D
Thank you.
Yup. I wish I could add some text or something. Lol. Back in the day you could add annotations.
Dude great video
Mafia 1 can’t be called a “ GTA clone “, it’s a game of it’s own.
2k and rockstar have the same parent comapany so nope it's not a gta clone
Dick Thick'em Mafia 1 was in development before GTA 2 even released. If anything, GTA 3 is a Mafia Clone
@Dick Thick'em Mafia 1 was made before 3D GTA.
@Dick Thick'em surree, gta is also a driver clone by your logic
Interestingly, because of events on 9. 11. developers of GTA 3 considered closing the project and releasing the game later. So, if they didn't choose to do quick fixes before realising the game, GTA 3 could be considered as Mafia clone and people would be maybe playing Driver or Mafia games now instead.
Mafia 1 is our national gem. By out mastermind Daniel Vavra. We Czechs/Slovaks hold this game very dearly.
As you should, sad to see mafia 3 turned out so bad due to another dev studio though
I'm glad to see a country that sees a game as a "national gem", imagine if it would have been set on Prague
Yes my brotha!
Im from the Netherlands and i was 12 years old in 2002 when i first played it.
Till today it has been my all time favourite game.
2 Years ago i got into a relationship with my slovakian girlfriend.
Some time ago we were talking about videogames and that's when i mentioned Mafia.
She immediately knew and told me that she also played it in her younger years because the dev's were Czech.
Yes, she is amazing! :')
@@josesalas6750 If game would be in Prague, it would piss off all Moravians, so it's better it's in fictional city in USA, but 30s Prague would be interesting.
Please don’t call Mafia a GTA clone. It’s nowhere near to being one.
exactly, so disrespectful
Yeah I got mad about that
I think he meant from the gamers prospective at the time gta 3 dominated the gaming scene so naturally when people saw an open world crime game come out after gta 3 they would assume it as a gta clone
same it's purely bullshit and the use of gta clone to games is just unjustified a lot of times now
Not a clone, as it is copying it. But gta invented the open world city, on foot and in cars. I just meant it in that sense. It is listed as a clone everywhere though.
Why are people calli g mafia and early 200games gta clones when litarally they were made around the same time in development
Mafia started development before GTA2 even came out :P
@@ScientistHL GTA 2 was 2D bruh
Lucas. When did I say it wasn’t?
@@ScientistHL How can be 3D 30s Mafia game clone of 2D Cartoony Gangster GTA 2?
@@ScientistHL so how is it a gta clone
A GTA clone ?!? Shame on you ! :D
ikr
I was like wtf, it's like using term "doom clone" in 2020... smh
Simply referring to it as it was called in its heyday. This is how the game was referred. This isn't a term for new games. But this was common back then.
People who only played GTA like to overuse that term.
Back in the day. It was basically a new genre that gta popularized. The term is dead now. I should of clarified better
Xbox uses trilinear texture filtering and ps2 has no mipmaps at all. That explains blurriness on xbox
Yeah this guy seems oblivious to these things. Went on the entire video saying that because PS2 has no texture filtering it looks better. Digital foundry explained this in a video about shenmue I think
Sorry. But you're right. I didnt know this. But you do. You shared the info. So thank you.
@@aleksmeister92Beside the techincal aspect, the no filtering method results in better visual quality.
@@Cyclon32289 That entirely depends, PC with mipmaps & anisotropic filtering smokes no filtering any day of the week. Luckily the PS2 is incapable of dealing with high resolution textures so the downside of not filtering textures is fairly slim.
Ps2 bilinear
The Music in Mafia got removed because it was mostly licensed music, guess they didn't feel like making new deals to keep it intact. Not sure how GOG handles it, but if you bought Mafia on Steam before they removed the Music you will have a DLC listed as "Mafia (2002)" which is a separate version of the game you can launch that still has all the Music. Wish Rockstar did something similar with the GTA games where they had to remove a few pieces of Music.
Just get the files from the internet 😂
Music is removed in GOG version, that's why I still play old pirate version even when I bought it on GOG, becase I can't imagine that game without original music.
@@Pidalin Me neither. That's why I downloaded the music files separately after getting it from GOG.
@@Pidalin you can easily restore the music even in the newer version
@@snake2106 but it's easier just install older version from "collection of classic" DVD which didn't need DVD in drive all the time like original game from 2002 and even when it needs CD or DVD in drive, you know how to solve that 🙂 you can literally use .exe file from GOG version instead of cr*ck
The pc version looks waaaaay ahead of it's time. It could easily be mistaken for an xbox 360 game.
But I'm curious how it would run on a midrange pc from 2002.
The console versions look like what open world games like gta looked like back then.
Because the realism is more in its art direction and attention to detail, than tech; also it applies to more than one aspect of the game.
I had Geforce 3 128 MB and 1.3 GHz CPU back then and I still rememeber having performance problems in this game.
@@PabloB888 On what settings? I had a similar setup with no problems, but I didn't play very much (too difficult at the time) so it's not conclusive, even if, that wouldn't be deterministic as PC game performances are all over the place, I myself didn't have as many problems with Just Cause 3 as everyone else, and I have 8 GB of ram.
@@hamedizadishirvan9487 I dont remember exact details besides having performance problems. Here's mafia 1 thread from 2003 and people with geforce 3-4 also mention problems.
forums.guru3d.com/threads/performance-troubles-with-mafia-videogame.54477/
GTA san Andreas and vice city looked way better than mafia 1 on consoles
There is only the PC version for me - a masterpiece. The console ones are just not the same.
The pc versions makes consoles look like crap
@@michaelwarren875 But it's logical, google what is inside PS2, I don't understand how something can run on such HW. :-D But it's console from 2000 so it's logical there can't be 1.5 GHz CPU like in 2002 PC.
I know its kinda silly, but i think they should add mafia 1 with the Windows graphics on Xbox one,i know this game is old but it is pretty cool.
How do you get the mod version?
If game production start 1998, how its gta clone?
I messed up. I meant to say it was considered a gta clone when it was released.
@@RookerVision
So it's still a clone of Driver 3, right?
dude do you even know when the first gta released and yea i know that gta 3 is the first from the 3d universe but gta is much more main stream u know
@@vihrenpankovski9130
GTA 1 came out in 1997.
Mafia was in production since 1998 and was supposed to be a clone of Driver, which in return was a semi-clone of GTA
if mafia launched in 2000 then gta would called mafia clone
good vid except "on PC there's no car damage" WHAT!? just because the doors don't unrealistically pop off... all the other damage stuff is there, they even bend shape when crashed, something GTA didn't do until 6 years later!
Also you can lost or shoot off wheels, shoot tires and smash windows - also not possible in GTA until GTA IV.
@@miaqz what do you think the pin comment has to do with my comment? ...
Mr Napkins He's not complaining he called it a gta clone lol.
@@47KRoman You could shoot tires in Vice City and San Andreas, but only when you were on foot.
Mafia was better at shooting, especially from cars, where you could aim while driving (although not in every direction, which is actually realistic), whereas in GTA you could only shoot in two directions (three on bikes). GTA 4 was the first in the series to include shooting in all directions, but Mafia 2 completely got rid of it (which absolutely sucks in some situations).
@@fishyfishy6675 He messed up and called it that
You lost all credibility when you called it gta clone not every open world 3rd person game is a gta clone
I didn't know that there was gonna be a Remake of the first Mafia.
Yeah, they haven't been marketing it well.
I see.

I completely forgot there even was a console port of this. By the time there was a console port I think most people viewed it as a very outdated game in terms of it's open world / GTA style. The driver roots definitely shows, as this game is much more strict about it's driving / laws, and has a lot less to do in the world.
You've used Hidden & Dangerous 2 footage (when talking about H&D1), but in fact, Mafia and Hidden & Dangerous 2 use the same engine.
Well shit. Sorry about that
"Mr Salieri sends his regards"
This is one of the earliest open world games I played and loved it on PC back when it 1st came out. Great job on this too, man wow at those differences on consoles.
The godfather game would make for a interesting comparison
Dont forget the psp version
@@djdilo7208 love it 😍
@@djdilo7208 which is just a tactical game that had levels from the console version only with pretenderd cutscenes rather then In game cutscenes
hey man the godfather games are just the movie in a game. I mean the movies are great but i think that the games are total disrespect to the movies.
lol this game on PS2 almost looks like PS1... The smoke effect, lights, draw distance all resemble PS1 indeed!
@A real bisexual petrol-head i personally like gt4 graphics.
Just like Gta 3.
Even Gta 3's graphics is more bad...
@A real bisexual petrol-head play Black, the amount of destruction, effects & details are absolutely insane, it was also specifically developed for the console using an engine designed for that console.
Holy crap this game looks amazing on pc, especially from 2002, when i first saw someone play the pc version i thought it was a 2007 game
The aliasing is atrocious on PS2, I prefer a blurry and filtered mess to a completely unstable glittering mess. the PC version is miles better anyway, but let's not forget the PS2 is mostly unplayable because of it's 15/25 fps range and that's the main problem with the game when it released on it. Xbox has at least decent performance. The PC is just at another level.
This game has no excuse to look as bad as it does on PS2 and Xbox for a 2003 release. It looks closer to a budget N64 game
Probably engine related with very little experience creating games on console?
This couldn't have been an easy game to port being a custom engine. The Xbox version definitely could have been much better, but instead they are pretty much the same except PS2 got some lower quality textures and Xbox got some better textures but over did the filtering.
You said GTA Clone and YES this did come out after GTA III. But I think at least this was the first major game after GTA III to do this and frankly it's better in every conceivable way. Even mafia 2/3 and some modern open world titles just don't compare to some of the things this title did.
Not to mention it's one of the only games to take place in this time period; a rare thing.
Thanks for this comparison BTW, I only played on PC and had no idea how far and away better it was. Truly a PC title
Nice Video! Please make Silent Hill Shattered Memories Wii/PS2/PSP Comparison, there is nothing like that on YT
The remake is in the works by Americans, that ruined Mafia 3, they do not understand it, a disrespect compared to the original.
Well, hopefully it is just the original, but HD
In the credits of Mafia 3, there is a 2K Czech part with Czech people, because some people from there joined Hangar 13 after whatever happened to 2K Czech, so it’s not just Americans.
and it's been developed in the Mafia 3 engine, if they improved the engine a bit it can still be a great game, but won't beat the original.
Mafia is not a GTA clone. It was in dev before GTA III
That is true. But it was referred to as a gta clone when released. I should have been more specific.
@@RookerVision yes, and that was the reason why it was underrated. People saw it through the GTA love glasses.
Same thing happened to mafia 2. I remember my friends saying "it's not like gta at all".
And I was like, and how is that a bad thing?
Gta basically made any open world game under perform at that time. Like mercenaries 1 and 2 were considered clones. But way different.
You should do Deus EX: the conspiracy for playstation 2 and pc
Loving your side by sides! May I ask which capture card do you use to get footage from systems like the xbox, ps2, gamecube?
I couldn’t be more hyped for the mafia 1 remake. Its a game thats near and dear to me (considering it is the game that came before my favourite of all time). Even having grown up with ps2 version didn’t bother me much at the time. Great comparison btw
Also I remember console versions were outsourced. " Illusion was not involved in porting the game." But I don't know the studio behind it.
That was an awesome video. I hope you continue to make these videos because I'm loving how you compare the versions of the game to mod projects as well, it's fantastic. I was just wondering if you may consider doing a comparison of star wars battlefront 2 2005 for ps3, xbox, pc and the Star Wars Battlefront 2 Remaster Project. I'd be interested to know your thoughts (if you make the video) on the ps3 and xbox versions in particular but also the mod project because the developer for the mod has done some breathe taking work. I'm sure you wouldn't have troubles finding the console and pc versions for the game but you can find the mod project on moddb.
Thank you. And eventually I will im sure
I played this game religiously on PC when it came out.
Yeah. Super fun
Weird how the modded PC version got rid of shine on the cars though.
Those are settings you can re enable if you are running the ENB series. Only problem with modded Mafia 1 is that it is unstable and crashy as hell.
It looks like, what's happening with the Xbox version is that they implemented some advanced features that ended up doing a disservice to it. The lines on the road are all being blurred out with heavy mip mapping, and I think the lighting is more advanced, but what that does is make everything (especially at night) dimmer and less vibrant, whereas on the PS2, the less advanced lighting is just showing the 3D models exactly as they are, and makes everything clearer and more visible. Ironic, kind of. But there was a lot of that in the 2000s, like, "Look at our realistic lighting! This character is in shadow and you can barely see their face at all when they're talking to you in this cutscene! Isn't that great?"
Yep, ruined some better textures with heavy handed filtering...lol
When they say, that consoles are capable of nothing these days, I'll show them this video. The difference is huge.
It’s on ps4 and Xbox one not ps5
Oh. Ill fix it later. In bed now
@@RookerVision ahh you just want them click bait views 🤣🤣
Well duh. Lol
I just played this game recently, and ngl driving in this game was soo relaxing
Yeah same
It's crazy man, I've just let you a comment 3 days ago (under your Star Wars Republic Commando video) about doing a comparison video for Mafia 1 and you did it !!!
Noice
the pc version of mafia looks perfectly well and runs extremely smoothly all the times on windows 10/11
1:43 WHY DO CARS LOOK SO GOOD ON WINDOWS? WHAT???
I can't wait for the Mafia remake to release. I never played the original and wasn't all that into it to be fair until I play Mafia 2 on PS3 and then wanted to go back and play the original but couldn't find a copy anywhere. So now it's being remade I can't wait to play it.
The pc version does have car damange, just a bit more realistic car damage. The ps2 and Xbox version use a more basic car damage model while the PC receive bullet holes as expected, and it does bend when crashing through other vehicles or building. Plus you can shoot the wheels in a semi-realistic fashion and shatter the wind shields.
@A real bisexual petrol-head That depends... The majority of the cases the PC version is better, buuuut there are EXcellent Console game with lousy and inferior PC ports as well. So it's somewhat a 65-45 situation.
Wish most games utilized pcs to its fullets while having graphical preset to completely potatofy it just in case low spec users wants to play at potato framerate.
Just look at it. The consoles look horrendus.
Games are sadly developed with consoles in mind, pc is an afterthought. Makes sad as a pc gamer to play garbage console ports, but some devs are doing a decent job of porting.
@@autistiumhydroxide3614 Thats cuz consoles are the main platform of gaming, even pc is powerful it is not a dedicated gaming platform but i dont mind graphics as long as gameplay is good

Okay, stop giving this guy shit for calling it a GTA clone. I did and I learned that he just made a mistake. He has explained it in the comments, and so let's just drop it.
This game is not a clone. It is an emotion.

Thank you
Great comparison! Never knew console version had street racing! I hope it will make an appearance in the remake.
Thank you. The street racing was pretty fun. So yeah, would be cool
Wow, you'd think the Xbox version would look better than the PlayStation version because Xbox runs a version of Windows.
Great video man
Would you mind doing a side by side of spongebob movie game?
Weird question I know
The windows version looked almost like a ps3 game.
It really seems like it was in development for the Dreamcast and then resumed on Xbox and PS2 without even upgrading the game engine, honestly the PS2, let alone the Xbox shouldn't be that dated visually even by 2004 standards.
On the non modded Mafia 1 Windows edition the reflection on the cars are better than the modded windows port
Anyone wishing to re-visit this on PC, try the snow mod or sneemod as it was first titled, it changes up the car physics a bit making it hard as hell in the crap cars and you feel cold playing it too, bloody good game, finished it on PC maybe 5 times.
JurassicNinja, if you do see my reply to your reply on the Godfather video, please give me some signal that you understood what I meant now and I didn't hurt your feelings. Hey, You want to know what game Gatheting Of Developers also published that was developed by a different company?
the PS2 version looks like a late PS1 game. Imagine this game on the GameCube PSP and Dreamcast.
Just like Gta 3.
Even Gta 3's graphics more bad...
It doesn't look anything like a PS1 game.🙄

Thank you. I wish it could be longer too.. in future they all will be longer when I can put more time into youtube.
Nice video Jurassic Ninja I like this video.
I just saw an ad where a house cook was being sold for $10, but he’s Canadian.
Hey @RookerVision. Just wanted to point out a small correction. The Xbox still generates street lines, as you can see, but they only render right next to the car. Maybe the Xbox version was using 1x anisotropic filtering.
Yeah. You're right. Just hard to see
Also. How are you able to know they used x1 anisotropic? I didn't read this anywhere?
Amazing Video
Thank you
Nice video.. Do you have any comparative between ps1 games in ps2 and ps1 en ps3 vs emulators and ps4 also. Thanks
I was considering getting a used copy of Mafia on PS2 but after seeing this video I'm gonna get it on PC instead. The differences are enormous!
Bruh nobody’s gonna spend the whole game looking at trees and car exhaust
Maybe GOG version doesn't have it but the base windows game of Mafia definitely had car damage. It was one of the visual highlights.
1:38 - that's not true, there is massive damage model for cars on PC, when you fall on roof you will deformate it etc...you can destroy tires or remove whole wheel only by shooting. But it's possible that american version is little different, who knows, I was always playing original Czech version. Mafia had really good graphics in 2002 and car and damage models are even better than in most of today games.
Watching the ps2/xbox, I was like I swore this looked way better. PC got added, me ah now that makes more sense
It's not garbage it's classic Yes looks out dated but it doesn't look like garbage that's insult to Mafia franchise people seem to forget if wasn't for the originals these awesome remakes or remasters wouldn't happen or exist
Mafia 1 isn’t a gta clone, it is it’s own thing
Great video ! Keep up the good work!
2am upload oh damn
I usually set it on a schedule upload for 11am. But said screw it. I wanna read comments
Lol this is probably the most controversial side by side ever released
Saying that mafia runs at 60fps on max setting on pc is disingenuous. It runs like this on modern hardware, definitely not on pcs of that era. Not to mention that it's resolution in 2002 would've been no more than 1024x768, but it's clearly higher in the video.
Hi dude can you suggest some modern games of the 2013-2019 era for intel powered pc's it will be very grateful of you

mafia 2
sleeping dogs
assassin creed 1 2 3 4
gta 4 not sure about 5
crysis 1 and 2
farcry 1 2 3 maybe 4 too
@@mdsokamal8972 Uhh... most of those games are before the 2013-2019 era, they're still great games and should definitely be played. GTA 5 could run on absolute lowest settings if you at least have something like a Pentium from 2017 and at least an Intel HD 530. GTA 4 is horribly optimized so it might only run on low settings and so is Crysis 1. Crysis 2 is supposedly better optimized than the first game but it could still be demanding.

Well between the 2 consoles, I'd pick the xbox version due to the higher frame rate, and the reflexions

I have the original PC version on disc and it has some very advanced car damage for the time, doors just don't fall off from shooting them, which is silly anyhow. But the cars could be scratched and deformed in accidents or by beating the crap out of them with a baseball bat. The console versions were pretty poor ports though and I don't think they tried to hard with the Xbox box version which could have likely been a bit better.
Sooooo, the title says, ps4 and xbox one. Where?? Didnt see that part in the video.
i remember run this on my core2duo pc. cant wait for the remake!
It was released a few months after GTA3. I wouldn't call it a clone.
Very good video!!!
Played this gem on both console and PC; it was obviously better on the computer; but I still had loads of fun with the thing on the consoles.
...the XBox seems to have more goin' on than on PlayStation 2, but the texture filtering is absolutely horrendous on Microsoft's undoubtedly more powerful machine! That thing was capable of much more than that.
Man, we're talking about a system that handled spectacular ports like Doom 3 and Half-Life 2.
On the bright side, it seems to bost a higher resolution than the PS2, given that it looks a lot less jagged; could also be some sort of anti aliasing though, I don't know...
Game was on a whole different level on windows, and the ports weren't that great; had the team done a better job at it, I bet XBox could have hanled the original in all of it's glory; PS2 however, I don't think so; although it ran Driver 3 and Parallel Lines and those even had dynamic 3D stencil like shadowing goin' on, so who knows what a job done better could have brought us.
