The problem is that the authoritarian playbook is pretty simple in this regard: make the legislature dysfunctional. If nothing gets done, there space to move the narrative towards "this isn't working, we need a STRONG LEADER" and eventually people will fall for it. The liberals will just have lukewarm executives who will willingly stay within their boundaries and the authoritarian leaders push as far and as hard as they can for now power.

Australian here and that summation is exactly what I see as an outside observer.
I'm actually an engineer and have been trying to figure out why economists are driving all our economies into the ground. That story swings around to the Milton Friedman inspired, Ronald Reagan Reaganomics and Margret Thatcher Thatcherism revolution in the 1970s. Friedman was an absolute free market advocate. He believed that governments were inherently corrupt and incompetent and hos free market was the solution.
Also out of the same University of Chicago mentality came the Neoconservative movement who also believed that governments were the problem not the solution which was also another thing adopted by Reagan.
So there's been both a political and economic movement to push governments out of the way so that the business community could run everything. Margret Thatcher also introduced the world to external consultants effectively running government departments. YES - governments had always hired outside consultants but Thatcher jacked that through the roof. Here in Australia (right now) all of our government departments are effectively run by consultants (KPMG, EY, PwC,.......) and its a major problem. Go look up the PwC scandal.
So you are SPOT ON that this is a huge problem in America, but its also a problem that America has exported to the rest of the world and we have all been stupid to accept it.

In a democracy, the people hold the power over how they are governed. In a republic, we have a set of laws that protect the minority from being unfairly abused by the majority. that doesn't happen in a Democracy. "Democracy" means If you have a christian country and muslims overtake the population where they are now the majority, the country is no longer christian--it is now a muslim country. 13:10 - The problem with the logic that Kamala's numbers might increase if she got more media attention is that this was exactly the opposite during the 2020 primaries. The more visible Kamala is, the more people seem to dislike her. Maybe that has changed since then or will play differently for a general audience than for democratic primary voters, but I am just not necessarily convinced her numbers would rise rather than stay the same or even fall over time if she became the nominee. I agree she'd be the most likely pick if Biden dropped out, but really I think the convention should select someone else. We can talk about what's more "democratic" here but the simple fact of the matter is that the DNC already put its thumb on the scale for the primary anyway to make sure Biden had no viable opposition. I don't see the convention selecting someone as particularly less democratic than this year's primary was.

But the current dominant way of thinking was always fragile and almost instantly reversible - Foucault warned of this decades ago. For a mass of Americans - of westerners - the meaning of the word democracy has experienced extreme slippage. You notice it in those annoying 'look at the freaks' interviews of extreme MAGAs, but more worryingly in the pseudo-liberal mainstream too. Liberals are putting the word liberal inside ironic quotation marks when they speak it, as if it embarrasses them. Meanwhile, leaders of the American liberal democracy refuse to act as if democracy is under urgent threat. Use it or lose it, before you all forget how it works.

Well, Trump got into prominence because Clinton actively bankrolled his campaign in the egotistical delusion of "having an easier opponent to beat" because she didn't want to have to actually do anything polciywise in order to win, then when Trump won the DNC's been spending the rest of the time bankrolling the candidates most likely to lose to Trump on purpose.
Why? Because as long as "but Trump" is there as an excuse, the Dems can just get away with campaigning on nothing but fear of Trump. If there's no Trump threat the DNC might have to actually "do something" in order to get elected.

Whether it’s Biden, Harris, Bernie, Whitmer, Newsom, some Democrats are not going to like them, and the general election is likely to be close, at least in terms of the electoral college. I am fine with any of them, because they are all far better than Trump, but Democrats have a history of being unable to get together behind one candidate, with 2020 being a rare exception that seems difficult to replicate this year. My concern is that Democrats won’t be able to settle on a replacement for Biden without permanent division.
