    When you rewatch it, you notice there are a LOT of callbacks in the final act of the film, such as Joyce shouting "FASCIST" before shooting Nicholas, that was a callback to their first meeting when she's doing the crossword, as is him saying "hag!" afterwards. Another one is the farmer shouting "MUM!" when Angel hits his car and she shoots him, that's another callback cos remember the detectives mention "everybody and their mums are packing here". "Like who?" "Farmers!" "Who else?" "Farmers' mums". See if you can spot all the callbacks and self-referential moments, there are a lot of them. One of my faves is when one of the detectives says "shall we put in a call to Aaron A Aaronson?" then the kid in the model village at the end says his name is "Aaron Aaronson". Also not sure if you noticed, but "the greater good" is never said just once, whenever anyone says it it's always repeated by someone else! Honestly this is such a clever and well crafted film, every time you watch it you notice something new.

    just to be clear, the drinking age in the UK is 18. Thats the age you legally have to be to get served alcohol in a bar or at a shop. Drinking at home i believe is parents discretion provided your over a certain age (5 years old), and are not allowed to become drunk. However, kids obviously still do, and its not uncommon to see kids drink at 14, 15 or wt ever. Dunno wt ppl said on the This is england video, but thats the actual law.

    Most actors have been highlighted to you, apart from the police inspector, played by Steve Coogan from the "Night at the Museum" franchise, the other two policemen Martin Freeman and Bill Nighy have been in too much stuff to list here. Lord of the Rings and Hobbit director Peter Jackson was the Santa who stabbed him. Joyce Cooper "hag" was played by Billie Whitelaw, the evil children's nanny from one of the most iconic horror films "The Omen". The vicar/priest is played by Paul Freeman (no relation to Martin), he was Belloq the main baddie in "Raiders of the Lost Ark". The guy from the NWA in charge of all the cctvs, was Edward Woodward, the original "Equaliser" from an 80s U.S. tv show, (theme song "An Englishman in New York" written and performed by Sting), he was also the original Wicker Man, that Hollywood butchered with a terrible remake starring Nicholas Cage. His last line in this "oh God no" was exactly the same as in The Wicker Man. There're actually two Oscar winning actresses in this, apart from Cate Blanchett, wpc Doris, played by Olivia Coleman, who won best actress in 2018 or 19.

      Cate Blanchett played uncredited Nicholas's ex-partner at the start of the film, Genene/Genine. You can only see it's her by looking at her eyes thanks to the forensic suit, but it also gives a master class in acting with your eyes and your voice as you can see her emotion just from that small region of her face.

      Edward Woodward (neighbourhood watch leader) was in The Wicker Man and The Equalizer and Billie Whitelaw (the hotel owner) was in The Omen. Bill Nighy (Chief Inspector) has been in loads of stuff like Valkyrie and Jim Broadbent (Inspector Butterman) has ended up in pretty much every British film for ages now. Steve Coogan (London Inspector) is of course quite famous in the US and UK as a comedian and Stephen Marchant (Mr. Staker) is another comedian who is quite famous. Paddy Considine's partner is Rafe Spall (son of Timothy Spall), the first time I noticed him was in ''Shaun of the Dead'', he was the young cocky colleague of ''Shaun''. He's also in an excellent BBC tv-mini-series ''The Shadow Line'' with Chiwetel Ejiofor (''Dirty pretty Things''). Btw, Paddy Considine's directing debut ''Tyrannosaur'' with Olivia Colman, Peter Mullan and Eddie Marsan is a very impressive debut but harsh drama, not an easy watch, which imo is quite similar in tone to Gary Oldman's only directing effort ''Nil By Mouth'' (1997) with Ray Winstone. (It’s why he said it was a Homage to William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.)

    So. start with some factual stuff
    Alcohol is complicated in the UK. 18 is the age when all restrictions on purchase are removed, subject to the licensee's discretion.
    But
    In England if you have alcohol with a meal. and it's purchased by someone over 18 then it's usually okay.
    Anyhow, this whole film is wonderful and almost a directory of British film and TV actors while nodding to endless other films. It all, sort of, spins from the equally wonderful Spaced, a TV sitcom from the 90s. In some ways it's even a throwback to Will Hay and other old-school comedies. I love it, and it's a brilliant reaction. Thank you.

    I think my favorite info tidbit from this is Frank's police uniform is Victorian - the style and the VR insignia, compared to the then current ER for Elizabethan, and the now CR for whatever 'an' Charles turns out to be (Previous Charles' reigns were Caroline(I) and Carolean(II)). It gives an indication he's very much stuck in the past.

    The knife was a Stanley Knife (or Standing Knife as my father used to call them). Apparently Americans like to call them Box Cutters for some reason.

    • @chrissiereacts
      @chrissiereacts  6 месяцев назад +1

      We call them xacto knives lol

    • @lloydcollins6337
      @lloydcollins6337 6 месяцев назад +1

      Sort of - a stanley knife has a retractable triangular blade usually inside a solid metal handle. Stanley is also a brand of tools in the UK (like Milwaukee or Makita) but what Skinner had there was a cheap version of that with disposable blades which you break off as they become dull inside a cheap plastic handle with a long hole down one side - the blade is still retractable with a ratchet mechanism but it's not designed to be used forever like a proper Stanley knife.
      A box cutter however is just that - it's a tool for cutting boxes. Supermarkets issue them to their staff a lot of the time (which was probably the look they were going for here as Skinner was a supermarket worker/manager) but proper box cutters have fixed blades behind a plastic U guard so that the worker can't touch the blade at all but it fits over the edge of a box to cut it open or whatever.

    If you like Paddy, you should watch "The Outsider" with Jason Bateman. It's based on Stephen King lore stuff about children being abducted and the police forensics team trying to track down the real killer. Paddy plays a major role toward the end of the 10 part series. Definitely worth the watch.
