    They changed my job at the place I have worked at for 11 years. The new job is soul crushing data-entry to/from Japanese who don’t explain anything… I’m probably going to quit. Perhaps this is an exactly what you’re talking about but I would rather be jobless then have my job.

    Job Security these days is doing things the machines cannot do. Robots Replacing People, Streaming Services replacing 4K Ultra Physical format, DEAD. Digital Vs Physical It affects everyone as you either rent or own.

      @powdergate VHS still very functional! Hi-Fi over Wi-Fi! Stereoscopic is not digital compression and no AOL buffering lag on my tapes Perhaps my collection will end up in that cave in Beneath The Planet of the Apes, outlasting even 4k in the future further lol

    Reminds me of a story. Borderlands 3 was selling very good, yet employee's weren't being paid as much as they thought they should be. Greasy Randy tells them (paraphrasing) "You either like our policies (at Gearbox), or you find another job." This was during the time where the fed said 11 million Americans lost their jobs.
    I don't like this new world of gaming, where every new game must cost 100's of millions of dollars, with scopes so big it turns talented, passionate people into souless husks from crunch, and ultimately ruins what could've ended up being a greatest-of-all-time. Cyberpunk 2077 with a narrower scope could've been one of the best games of all time.
    People can say developers are out of touch, and I agree. Plenty of dev teams have gone on public record saying some pretty dumb stuff. But ultimately you can reorient a development team. Close scopes. Make games that are memorable, not the new fad. You don't get that far unless those developers are well paid and passionate. You don't get well paid and passionate while gaming mega-corps suck in tens of billions of dollars a year and execs get fat stipends.
    It's unfortunate we live in a world where useless people don't suffer any consequences for their bad, stupid or ignorant actions. In fact, they usually get a nice bonus, all while the people who made you that money printer work over christmas.

    I’m so glad that In the UK you can’t just fire people without cause, if you lose your job it’s via your own performance problems or redundancy, which is somewhat comforting at least

      You can believe that, but these layoffs were international, including offices in the UK.

      @@Mwuff7775 I’m just stating the legal situation. if you can give me some examples I’d love to know about them. I’d imagine the numbers were much lower as they actually have to have good grounds or simply not need that many employees anymore. In which case they’d need to give reasonable severance/redundancy at least. If people were wrongfully terminated, they have very strong grounds to take legal action (which is why uk business are very cautious with letting people go)

    It's so odd to me... A lot of the world is "at will" currently, but there's also a labor shortage...? Something's not adding up. It's almost like our values are screwed up as a people.
    Thanks for the music takes and sharing a little of your experience! I hope it gives a bit of comfort to those that need it.

      There is a labor shortage but it's mostly for blue collar jobs that involve intensive manual labor and low pay.

    Let's be real. You don't need 1,000 people to make a game. Look at indie games for example. The more people, the less soul. It's good to trim the fat. It's brutal, but like you said, it's part of the path. A path that many people choose.

      Stardew Valley is one of the finest examples of this. 1 single developer and yet look at the traction and love that game has gotten.

      I disagree with that for one reason , you don't need 1000 to make ONE game but you can have your team make different games or smaller projects .
      For example , Raven studios used to make interesting fps games but for the last decade they have been part of the soulless call of duty machine , so if Activision were to implement some changes , they could have them work on their own projects instead of closing down the studio or firing people

    Thanks, Geebz!🤙I think the important thing is learning to adapt to change in general. None of this is permanent whether its a job, a relationship, or just simply life. Being able to roll with the punches and KNOWING that they will come, but having faith that we WILL be ok 😌makes life a whole lot more enjoyable✌🧝🌱

    The way I look at it, in regards to the layoffs is this. Life goes in cycles. It's actually not that big of a deal in the big picture. All these devs who were working for greedy companies with not so great reputations are literally in a great position. It's like a prisoner being released from prison. Scary at first cause you are starting from nothing again, BUT that also means it's a new chapter in life. So I look at this as all these devs may have been fired, but they didn't lose their skill with being fired...so all these people could just unite and create new game studio's, make new indie studios and make new games that are smaller passion projects and they can rebuild up the gaming industry to be better. While those big companies all take the real loss as the bad PR wrecks them an nobody supports them anymore lol. So yeah big companies firing you sucks, but just get together with all who were fired, and make your own studio that's not under creative restriction by a greedy horrible company like Microsoft. They could get support from Kickstarter and such and once their first game hits, if they actually care and make a game like Balders Gate 3, well then they are far better off then they ever were at the old job.

    • @maromania7
      @maromania7 7 месяцев назад +5

      I...yeah that's a nice sentiment, for 3 weeks until rent's due. Even in the industry, many are living paycheck to paycheck. They didn't lose thier skills, but they lost thier place at which they were paid to use them. And now there are tons of people desperate for the few jobs remaining. Ones you may want even less, and ones where the company will screw you over because they know you have no leverage. You'll take sub-par because you both know you don't have a choice. And for the majority, you're now going to end up with whatever non-industry job you can scrounge up. if you can find one, because everyone's hiring, until you apply and learn they've been "hiring" for 7 months and not actually accepting applications, because it's just to make the employees feel like a replacement's always at the ready.
      Like yeah, indie games, cool. that takes years, money, and it's a giant gamble you're betting your children on. Because you're taking a massive chance while having no job, and if you fail (which most do) you're on the street. You see the rare times it works, not the thousands who failed for every one of those success stories. And seriously, PR wrecks? Do you actually think that does anything? EA was voted the WORST COMPANY IN THE COUNTRY for years and years, the most hated thing in both the gaming industry and the corporate landscape overall. Guess what, stayed the most profitable anyway because nobody cares. Sure, they lose a small dedicated fanbase for a few years, it's barely a drop in the bucket.

    • @Mwuff7775
      @Mwuff7775 7 месяцев назад +2

      As someone who works in this industry, that's much easier said than done friend. And it's not just the layoffs, it's the size and the 2 day notice. 500+ people being injected in the industry without a job in a single day with no prior notice is not a great experience. You talk about "working for greedy companies", yet Riot Games, one of the biggest growing vg companies in the world has never executed anything like this, has never shown signs they would. They were extremely tight knit until just a few years ago when they started to expand. I really think you just don't understand what's happening, and if you're not truly aware, should you be sharing your opinion? Is it worth anything? Short answer is no.

    • @Mwuff7775
      @Mwuff7775 7 месяцев назад +1

      I mean you didn't even know who Riot was, and assumed he was talking about actual riots. You're very out of the loop, so you mustn't know what you're talking about, so just stop talking.
