Sitting here drinking a cuppa (coffee), expecting 4-8 inches of snow and seeing all the Green in The Gardens makes me green with envy right now. March in New England is truly the cruelest Month. But!!!! Will be back in Edinburgh in May and counting the days. Cheers.
Thanks for the fun facts, Just found your channel as I'm going to Edingburg in July and can't wait to share all my fun facts I just learned with my fellow travelers. going back to see more of your videos. Thanks again!
I went to Edinburgh last month with 4 other ladies and used many interesting facts about shortcuts and sights to see that I had learned from you. We stayed on the bottom third of the Royal Mile which was wonderful. We all tried the Haggis with whiskey sauce and loved it. Many thanks for helping me prep for my trip.
It never ceases to amaze me how you manage to remember all the trivia facts of Edinburgh. Nonetheless, I always find your knowledge of Edinburgh trivia entertaining. Congratulations on almost reaching 15K subscribers, Well Done. Slàinte
I just LOVE your videos and info on Edinburgh. I had the pleasure of visiting Edinburg in 2015 for two weeks. I’m an expat Scot (Scone is my home place) living in Canada and I took my Canadian sister with me to explore the Highlands following the Outlander tour which the books and tv show has just exploded our love of our homeland. I’ve watched several of your videos and find them absolutely intriguing. So much more info than you get from a tour. Love it. Keep up the good work and give me more more more…. Thank you.
Another excellent video. Love your videos with Edinburgh history in them. I've learnt a lot of little facts from them. Keeps me coming back to visit. Just got back home from Edinburgh yesterday.
Great idea with interesting facts, thx Tony! even for ourselves when we visit the city..no need for closer inspection on some of the plaques 🤣 Copenhagen's history can be traced back to around the year 700, when there was a small fishing village named Hafnia or Havn(in danish) (where Copenhagen Center, is now) The written history begins when Bishop Absalon; the founder, built a castle at the village of Hafnia(Harbor)in the 12th century. The village's location became the reason why Hafnia became so popular and the herring fishery in the Baltic and the associated trade, was why it thrived economically... Copen - Hagen derives from Købe - Havn translates to, Buy - Harbor, buying/trading at the Harbor hello from Denmark 🌸
Very interesting! It seems that Copenhagen and Edinburgh have very similar time frames; Edinburgh became the capital of Scotland in 1437 and Copenhagen became the capital of Denmark in 1445. In terms of the history of Edinburgh, it's known that there has been human habitation in the area for about 10,000 years (approx. 8,500 BCE). In the 1st century CE, the Romans recorded a tribe called the Votadini who lived there. They later became the Gododdin Kingdom in the Early Middle Ages (400s-500s), with Eidyn serving as the main fort. The 'city' later became a royal burgh under King Dauíd mac Maíl Choluim in the early 1100s - Eidyn becoming Edinburgh. It's from this time that the oldest building in Edinburgh dates - St Margaret's Chapel in Edinburgh Castle.
What is it with the Scots and elephants? The Duke of Argyle captains (or maybe captained) an elephant polo team (Chivas Regal Scotland) that competes thrice yearly, and won the World Elephant Polo Championship in consecutive years, 2004 & 2005.
Tony, You should suggest to the powers that be... Edinburgh should have an International Museum of Fire Fighting Brigades and a memorial for all firefighters, A museum exhibiting The World's commitment to public safety which started in Edinburgh. A Uniquely inspiring permanent venue for your city.
Great facts as always, I took my family sister's, neices etc on the gin bus, I could tell them a lot because of you they were amazed and said if it wasn't for me on the bus they wouldn't have knew anything 😂😂, I've let them know to watch your channel lol thanks for this 👍
Tony every time we come to Edinburgh me and my son and mum also enjoy our day there we love Edinburgh than Glasgow Edinburgh got more to offer and more historic things to see
Tony - I love your videos and have been a loyal viewer since I found your channel a couple of years ago. The videos at are the most fun are the FFKT (Fun Facts to Know and Tell) clips like this one thanks from New Mexico USA.
Hey Tony-I am so enjoying these videos. Can you tell me where the JK Rowling hand prints are again? Want to get a picture when I come to your beautiful city. Thanks.
That would be the Tooley Street fire at Cotton Wharf in 1861. It was the biggest fire in London since the the Great fire in 1666. Braidwood actually died in this fire when an unsafe wall of a building collapsed trapping him under the rubble. It took rescuers two days to locate him. The fire took two weeks to extinguish.
@@alanco608 It's a strange thing, searching earlier, the 1861 fire is barely mentioned in most reference lists of the famous fires; they tend to focus on the 1666 fire and everything prior.
As you know, the US is a mere babe compared to the UK. My Scottish ancestors came from what was once known as Ross Shire, through Canada and my grandpa settled in Detroit. My dad settled us in Chicago. So our Illinois capital, Springfield was founded 10th of April, 1821. 😮
I married a girl from Edinburgh, while meeting her family ( while on holiday ) her brother took me on a tour of the city. He told me that when the construction of a building was in progress they come across a burial ground , the city gave them permission to have the move it to the top of the building . I wonder can this be true ??

The poem Tam o’Shanter talks about “the lang Scots mile” and now, thanks to you I understand why.
Always a lovely tour and fun facts, Tony!

Brilliant, Tony! I would love to apply for tree ownership🌳💙🏴💙
Before you mentioned the 2nd great fire brigade I was thinking to myself "Yeah, he wanted job security, or fame, one of the other."

I believe Murrayfield also has or had an Electric Blanket under its playing surface. Please correct me if I an wrong Tony.
Made me homesick I live in New Zealand .😢
Just curious, which London fire were you thinking of? Because the "Great" fire was a couple of centuries earlier.
I may have got mixed up with fires..... not a historian as I like to remind people.

Tony,i'm still struggling to understand why they built a castle next to a railway station, baffling mate.😁

Jungle Book, not Robin Hood for the marching bit :P
I'm sure there were trumpet elephants in Robin Hood.
@@ClanBroonford There were! But the hup-two-three-four bit is Jungle Book - Colonel Haithi’s March :)
I was hoping no one would catch that. 😂

Great fire of London 1666 lol not in the 1800s. Maybe he's a time traveller.
