You brought back a lot of happy childhood memories. I lived in Calton Road just around the corner, I remember White Horse Close before it was renovated, the stairs on the right as you go into the courtyard were wooden and a bit rickety, my friend and I used to play houses on them. After the renovation work was completed we would play there until the houses were occupied. We would also squeeze through the railings of the strand (Holyrood Palace) and play there, nine times out of ten the police officers would turn a blind eye but ther were one or two that would chase us away.
Riddle's Close has always been one of my Favs. As for Trunks Close... Maybe the Chicken wears Glasses because he's 'Cock-eyed'? The House in Whitehorse Close (In the far left corner. Covered with Ivy). Belongs to a famous Female, Edinburgh Artist. A lovely German Lady. Sylvia Von Hartmann. Google her. She's on RUclips, too. Great to see that you still get excited about your wonderful City. I Love it too!
I'll always regret never having lived in Edinburgh. What a remarkable city it is. Thanks for this and all of your videos. I hope to return for another visit one day.
Patrick Geddes was a very prominent man. He was partly responsible along with a couple of architects for redesigning the buildings that we know of today as Ramsey Gardens, nestling on the edge of the Castle Esplanade and, upon the death of Maria Short, he purchased via public auction, ' The Lookout Tower', otherwise known today as Camera Obscura as well as rebuilding James Court. He even has a set of steps named after him, too, on Johnstone Terrace, opposite Castle Wynd North, which leads from there down to the Grassmarket.
All three closes are magical and it’s hard to pick a favourite. I think I would pick Riddle’s Close if pushed. I grew up in Edinburgh but hadn’t ever been there…just beautiful.
Wonderful. It's been 20+ yrs since I wandered through those wee neuks. I'd a friend who lived in a one bedroom flat in Geddes Entry and with English not being his first language, he said to me, "You'll just love my new place. It's got a hysterical, no, it's a historical staircase." It actually had a SPIRAL staircase! I still laugh at that to this day. He sadly returned to Italy and I've never been back since. I don't recall the name of the next Close that I visited but it was next to the old jail and near Parliament Square. Memories, memories. you've inspired me to do a wee re-visit and this time, with my camera. Thanks, Tony for today's trip.
Born and bred in Edinburgh and I've never seen any of these. I don't know what put it into my head but I always assumed that most of the closes were private and only accessible for residents. I think I would feel like I was intruding! Now I know anyone can have a look around. Always thought I would be challenged as why you were wandering around the close. Thanks!
Hi Tony. Loved revisiting these beautiful spots. We were in Edinburgh in October, and these closes were a highlight of the trip. Had been watching your videos for ages before we went, so we were well prepared! Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful city with us. It's my favourite place I've ever been and I'm coming back some day!
Thank you Tony these closes are stunning, hidden gems indeed. I've loved Edinburgh since I was a wee girl when I first visited in the 50's and now am a regular visitor as my granddaughter now lives locally. She came as a studen 13 years ago and has never left. Just wish my home town of Dundee had kept all its historic buildings but all demolished now sadly
Hello Tony. I’m so glad you did this video because closes are just beautiful with their hidden gems of statues or quiet gardens. My husband and I had some of our wedding photos taken in White Horse Close. I wish I could share those photos with you and your subscribers. There is an old woman who is an artist and her roommate is also an artist who live in that close. We have great candid shots of myself, my husband and the two women. If I could find them, I’d love to send them a photo, but sadly, I don’t remember their names. Anyway, thank you again for another amazing video of Scotland, my home away from home and where my family is from. Love from Ohio ❤️😁
Thanks Tony. Wanted to visit Trunks Close on recent trip to Edinburgh but couldn't due to it being closed so appreciate the look inside. Tracing Geddes history, loved Riddles Close
Thank you for these wonderful videos, Tony. They always relax me every early Saturday morning before I head out into the loud and in your face modern American life
In my world, and I couldn't get a closer look at it, but the "thing" at 4:10, would be a communications cross box where the wires come together so they can be worked and maintained, distributing the phone lines, cable television and electricity. I could be wrong, it could be art. I like the White Horse Close for the houses, but my favorite is Trunk's. I would go and read and if it was locked I'd be really sad. Riddle's is good, but I personally don't like the history on the walls - it takes away from the original beauty. All three are wonderful, absolutely gorgeous, and I'm really happy they try to keep them as clean and tidy as they do. Thank you.
If/when I get asked how I knew about a close off the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, I wouldn't say I just know; I'd say Tony told me. Looking forward to visiting the city again next spring!
Oh, that was a great watch. Thanks for sharing this. I'd get just as excited as you did on seeing all that. I'd probably get lifted, though, as having no camera, I'd be talking out loud to myself. I've tramped up and down the royal mile hunners of times over the years, rushing hither and thither, and never knew, or noticed, these were there. City living eh? Thanks again.
So excited to see these gems. Thank you Tony. I found Trunks Close to be so full of surprises that I'd love to see more. With such nice community space, do the people there ever gather fir occasions? I know I would host an open gathering if I lived nearby.
Speaking of things that are probably Things, what are the big metal things near where you started on the Royal Mile? I remember them being more in the way than anything when I visited, but I've got no idea what they're for.
A Chicken wearing glasses! These are the things tourists should be seeing but naw, its all short bread tins and that sort o pish. A lot of old bits of stone work like that here in Falkirk as well, part of a door in an old wall from 1200 blocked up, half a wall ancient half of it new, old buildings with new on the top.
Haud yer wheesth Tony... some parts of Edinburgh are sacrosanct so we locals can get away from the tourists when they invade our City in the summer months! LOL As an aside, i've noticed your video quality has been reducing lately, this one is only available in 480P and it's not the first... whether that's down to you or YT i have no idea but i'm sure it won't be helping you grow your channel. Back to the closes, the tourists will eventually find them so i have no issue with you highlighting them, it's just sad that one by one our hidden gems are being eroded.
Thank thank you for this great tour. Yes please do more. I love the history of Edinburgh architecture everything thank you
Tony, your enthusiasm for old, bricked-up doors and windows is delightfully infectious. Brilliant stuff, as usual. ❤

I can't believe I never knew about these! And Tony, thank you for totally geeking out over the architecture. That's just what I would do!

I love these videos! I remember when you challenged yourself to go down every single close on the Royal Mile and they are all so unique and wonderful!
Absolutely love your enthusiasm for this I'm there in a couple of weeks from Ireland and will be visiting these, I love this kind of thing. Thankyou.
As always interesting thanks 👍
Brill, I get excited about old buildings too😂. I wonder how many ghostly folk still walk through those doors.
Adding more sights to see on the next trip to Edinburgh! Would love to see more closes, Tony!
amazing, thanks again Tony

Thank you for this as always fantastic video 📹.
Very welcome
I've being in that last close in this vlog , it is beautiful took photos and enjoyed exploring.
Great! Thank you very much! Enjoy the Christmas season. p.s. Who are you talking to? We're over here... 👀😄
We explore a couple each visit. :) Two of those are new to us. We’ll take a look next autumn.
12:29 That is very cute and cosy
Speaking of things that are probably Things, what are the big metal things near where you started on the Royal Mile? I remember them being more in the way than anything when I visited, but I've got no idea what they're for.
Do you know if there is a physical book derailing the closes and there history?

I have uploaded in 4k but that takes longer for RUclips to render. Think you may have watched it before RUclips had fully rendered.
