    The most important implication of Kev’s illustration isn’t really the pros and cons of a light versus stacked box; Fuller’s philosophy won’t change much and it’s generally preferable to play with a light box whenever possible. However, the video really indicates the decrease in what Fuller was forced to do schematically (in order to hide weaknesses in his defense), and the corresponding increase in what Fuller should be enabled to do by the strengths of his personnel. In short, FSU should have the talent to enable variation. Some of this is due to the staff’s development of pre-existing roster pieces, some is due to portal additions, but regardless, the secondary should be in a place where we can mix up the numbers in the box pre-snap and then bring/feign different post-snap action. It is that unpredictability, along with what should be an excellent pressure rate from the front four, that comes together to transform a solid defense into a dangerous one.
    Great job, as always, Kev.

    This is exactly why players matter more than coaching. Have stud players on the line? Play more coverage. Have stud players on the back end? Generate pressure with blitzes, stunts, and twists. Have stud players at all levels? Do whatever you want.

    • @XsandNoles
      @XsandNoles  11 месяцев назад +1

      Jimmies and Joes beat Xs and Os. I would even argue the biggest part of coaching is strength and conditioning and development. Only after that do I think you get an edge with scheme.

      You both are leaving out a huge part of coaching....technique.

    • @joewilcox6149
      @joewilcox6149 10 месяцев назад

      In college technique isn't the biggest issue in the world. If you look at just the guys on our team: Verse his technique is alright but he is an ELITE DE. Johnny Wilson isn't the best route runner, but he is ELITE. Trey Benson still struggles to read which hole to hit and when, but he is ELITE. Just get bigger, faster, and stronger guys in college and you will win 90% of the time.

    • @joewilcox6149
      @joewilcox6149 10 месяцев назад

      Yup only when both teams have an equal amount of that does coaching and schemes really come into play. That is why the jump to the NFL is so difficult for guys. Because for 10+ years they just out muscled guys, and then when they go to the NFL it's like "oh I can't do that anymore"@@XsandNoles

    • @leewilliams6354
      @leewilliams6354 10 месяцев назад

      Scheme is important in CFB. This isn’t the NFL and just playing a light box hoping your guys up front can win is not much of a scheme. I don’t believe Fuller will make it through another season if his defense doesn’t produce top 10-15 numbers. The defense can’t be a liability and expect to win the conference.

    Another thing is dealing with gadget plays in cover 4 two high safeties ia not a good idea. When you watch the Clemson game they did these plays to us all night intact Dabo has always ran these styles of plays. Fuller lacks the ability to make adjustments

  • @pound4pound380
    @pound4pound380 11 месяцев назад

    I just told this to a guy in another video about not putting enough people in the box only works against weak competition. He said we were 15 rank defense nationally but when I pointed to the 4 teams we struggled against they all had bad players that we were facing. You can't rely on cover 4 all game long and he needs to mix it up. Its too predictable

    • @XsandNoles
      @XsandNoles  11 месяцев назад +2

      You should tell that to Kirby smart who runs as much light box as Fuller

    • @pound4pound380
      @pound4pound380 11 месяцев назад

      @XsandNoles Kirby Smart makes adjustments. I've watch his defense for years. He never just continues to run the same defense all game long especially after getting gashed several times. Great defensive coordinators adjust in game and down and distance. Fuller does not. I've watch Fuller for awhile. As good as that offense was last year we could have easily won the ACC with better defensive play in bigger games

    • @briley2177
      @briley2177 11 месяцев назад

      @@pound4pound380
      The caliber of the second string at UGA, and the caliber of backups at FSU, haven’t been on the same planet in recent history. And when you’re talking about “making adjustments” you can only adjust to some other scheme, formation, or personnel grouping that you have extensively repped (with both starters and backups) and that you have seen your guys perform competently. If you don’t have the guys capable of playing without safety help, you don’t practice as much single-high coverage, and therefore, you lack the ability/confidence to adjust to a stout run game without making yourself highly-vulnerable in the back-end… which, by the way, is EXACTLY what the opposition is trying to coerce you into doing by running right at your light box. I highly doubt that Fuller, as a long-time coach, lacks the knowledge and ability to identify a problem and understand how to respond… however, a quick look at the roster between 2020-2022 clearly indicates that we lacked the skill to make the necessary adjustments without giving away the farm through the air.
      Revisiting this sentiment at the end of the year will tell us all we need to know about Fuller because he is no longer in such a lose-lose situation with the 2023 roster. If in-game adjustments neutralize potent offenses, then our recent defensive shortcomings were likely less on Fuller and more on the players… if we still struggle, with this roster and a new DB coach, then the problem is probably with Fuller. But this year is the first season where Fuller truly has enough tools to accurately grade his acumen.

  • @tylermesservy9081
    @tylermesservy9081 11 месяцев назад

    I think the front 7 will be able to force more chaos in the backfield this year to be able to get away with that lighter box more often even though it’ll still hurt us sometimes I’m sure especially against elite teams

      No it's the smart way to utilize analytics to make the best defense you can with the players you have.

    The problem is the defense can't account for a running qb. Jayden Daniel's is going to feast. Last season he was obviously uncomfortable in the FSU game, but as the season went on he became more comfortable with the LSU offense. He's now extremely confident in the offense and has been coached up extremely well. Our OL is very deep and talented was well and I don't seen your line getting the pressure on him like last season. He will keep FSU off balance this year and LSU will win.
