Thanks for all the kind comments. We usually do 30 videos a day so to have an amp with a basic clean tone and then to hit an overdrive pedal to hear how it sustains is how we chose to roll to give people an idea of the difference of the tones of the various guitars that are played. Of course, going straight into any one of the glorious amps in back of me and turning it up would sound glorious but it is not practical for a number of reasons. For those interested in CD's...gregkoch.com
You're the best & coolest guitar player I habe enjoyed the last 5 years and/or more. And this comment comes straight ahead from a german blues-player influenced by Clapton, Moore etc.! You are rockin em all!!! Greetings from Hamburg, Phil :-)
This video is enlightening for so many reasons. It shows what a talented guitarist can do with an incredibly simple set up. Great sounding guitar, amp and distortion pedal. WOW!!!
Great review Gregg, I've been considering this guitar for some time, and your review answered all of my questions as well as blew me away with your covering different styles and making it look easy. Thank you.
DG320, the faded brown model is significantly different imo. The main differences being faded: burstbucker pickups, mahogany top, satin finish and rosewood fingerboard while the 50's tribute humbucker has: 498T and 490R pickups(same as the ones in the LP Custom), maple top(same as higher end LP's), nitrocellulose finish and baked maple fingerboard. Also, this guy's using a sweet amp and likely has more experience than you in dialing in his gear for great tone. Damn good player too.
Greg is such an underrated player. And he's really funny too. Watched him on a clinic here in Norway back when he was promoting the VG Stratocaster. Was really great fun!
Ya, I know that in terms of monetary value, the Dumbles have the Marshalls & Voxes beat. But I am just more fond of the raw tone of those amps rather than a simulated tone from a pedal. But, I love all of your videos, very great players you have showcasing wonderful gear.
I bought one in vintage sunburst second hand yesterday for a pretty ridiculous price and I'm struggling to put my feelings about it into words. Just sounds and plays amazingly.
how do this guitars (60s tribute and this one) stay in tune? I would really like to buy one of them, but I dont know how would they put up with my heavy picking and bending.. thanks Greets from Belgrade!
hey guys this will be my third guitar and I like rock; led zep, guns n roses, ac dc things like that. I was wondering if this would be a good choice because it is not as much as some gibsons but I feel like the pick-ups r a little to clean for rock any feed back would help a lot.
On pre 2010 models 498 and 490 pickups were found in the LP Faded, Studio and Supreme (although I think they swapped out for 496 and 500t Ceramics at one point). The Faded series used to only be a slight downgrade from a normal studio (Played a 2009 studio and it wasn't bad). In the new faded series they're using pickups without a name so guessing they'll be from the same line as the Epi pickups, you'll also find that the Maple top makes the most difference to an LP from personal experience :)
i think im sold on this guitar- will it have any more sustain or presence than my gibson faded flying V? I consistently switch back and forth between that and a mexi strat- i figured either this or an american strat would upgrade my set up a bit
nice guitar i think i might get one, can i just ask is the Gibson Les Paul studio 50 tribute smaller than its relative the Gibson standard because this guitar looks real small on this video???
Gotta question fer ya - I like the 60's neck, but like the 50's humbucker sound. what kind of frankenstienian mess would be created if I put the HB's in a 60's tribute? Thanks for your expertise!
Great with heavy distortion. I own one, And the way the guy at my local music store (whom I trust) said the 498t bridge pickup is what they call a "hidden metal pickup" most people dont realise it but with the right eq and distortion levels its perfect, Mainly depends on your amp and pedals though.
Thanks for the review. I was considering between the 60s and 50s, I think I made up my mind....but then again, it could just be your kickass playing...damn!
Maybe a weird question from me, but is this a good guitar for different types of metal? I want to get it, and I'm a metal player, but I really don't want to buy something which isn't very fit for metal. Thanks!
The tone in this video is just fantastic. I've been playing acoustic for years but knobs on amps and pedals are a mystery to me. Could you give us a clue as to the gear you're using, where to point the knobs and what to do with the tone controls on the guitar? All help greatly appreciated.
Greg Koch (for me) is a stunning, virtuoso and - in a good way - funny player. For me he is one of the greatest player of all time and I was always inspired by his playing and by his gear-demonstrations since I was a little Hamburger Boy! :-) Nothing would be better, than having a jam-session with my big idol! But since this might be unreachable, I still love to see his presentation-videos of (many of my own) gear! Keep on Mr. Koch! Best wishes from Hamburg, Germany!!! Philip Meyer :-)
mmmm nice guitar, I'm starting to think that a lespaul like this without binding actually looks best in gold! I must have one! With a lighter chambered body and maple fret board I recon the 50's fatter neck makes for a better balance in tone.
Nice demo. I am curious, do you notice any difference in tone between the chambered and non chambered models? Also, do you think the chambered models are good for hard rock? Thanks.
It´s really hard for me to concentrate on the guitar or even on Greg´s incredible playing for my eyes are mesmerized by that stack of Dumble Amps on the right. Are these real Dumbles or Clones?
Oh wow...very cool guitar, but that guy can really really wail on guitar. Super impressive playing there, which made for a great demonstration of this guitar.
Nice performance. The world needs more guys like you to demo the new guitars. Of course that is a double edge sword. You could probably make a five string, dumpster found guitar sing.
Basically, the "60's" always have a thinner neck profile. But some of the tribute series comes with p90 pickups. It's not a matter or better / worse, it's more like the features that you like the most =D. Personally, I would chose the 60's with p90's.
We're running through the clean channel of a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, and use a Fulltone OCD distortion pedal for the gristle!

This guy is so good he makes any guitar sound great!
This video is enlightening for so many reasons. It shows what a talented guitarist can do with an incredibly simple set up. Great sounding guitar, amp and distortion pedal. WOW!!!
Greg's charisma alone makes these videos worth watching. It certainly helps that he can play like hell, too.
Great review Gregg, I've been considering this guitar for some time, and your review answered all of my questions as well as blew me away with your covering different styles and making it look easy. Thank you.
What an amazing guitarplayer this guy is! Great technique and style :)

I'm taking delivery of this guitar any day now and boy how I wish this cats set of skills came right along with the guitar but such is life.

Greets from Belgrade!
Nice tasty riffs my friend....jazzy, bluesy, rocky...and all delicious!
Rocketh On!
sure wish you would do a review of the new 2012 studio with the coil taps !!!! Please !!!
Wine Red would be a nice color to do one with !!! Thanks
How does the 50s Tribute sound compared to a Studio? Looks like the difference is covered pickups on the Studio.
6:45 what is this?
Played one in the exact finish. Neck is a bit bulky to me, but I'm used to it. Plays awesome!
alright, thank you ill look in to that but i might get a 2012 studio

Does this guitar have the 50's wiring and bumblebee caps?
sounds great how does this compare to a normal studio or a prs se 245 i cant decide what to buy lol
I like this dude, very colourfull tones! Hot sound, amazin guitar player!
Wait... Only 300 bucks? Did you buy it used? If not, where did you buy it?

I don't which is better this or the 60's tribute. Which one should I get, I don't really know all the substantial differences.
i think im sold on this guitar-
will it have any more sustain or presence than my gibson faded flying V?
I consistently switch back and forth between that and a mexi strat- i figured either this or an american strat would upgrade my set up a bit

Is there FOUR dumble amps behind you!! that's crazy cool
There is one of the baddest guitar players of YT!
Awesome tone..
Gotta question fer ya - I like the 60's neck, but like the 50's humbucker sound. what kind of frankenstienian mess would be created if I put the HB's in a 60's tribute? Thanks for your expertise!
no binding?
how does it sound with heavy distortion? im trying to choose between this or the 70s tribute. also is the neck really thick?
Great with heavy distortion. I own one, And the way the guy at my local music store (whom I trust) said the 498t bridge pickup is what they call a "hidden metal pickup" most people dont realise it but with the right eq and distortion levels its perfect, Mainly depends on your amp and pedals though.

The ones on musicians friend have rosewood on the neck.. did I miss out on thr baked maple? I really dig it.
I think the amps contributes a lot, so if you can test the same guitar on a valve amp, a good one, it will sound much better.
Damn, can't wait to get my piece. Just ordered my 50's tribute. 8)
That right there is some BADASS guitar playing, hot damn!
are the tuners shitty on this guitar? i see you checking your tuning after each play there. would you recommend changing the tuners?
Maybe a weird question from me, but is this a good guitar for different types of metal? I want to get it, and I'm a metal player, but I really don't want to buy something which isn't very fit for metal. Thanks!
Does this guitar come with a Nashville or ABR1 style bridge?

This man is unbelievable.... just... unreal! You gotta love it =)
Great!
Would you mind telling us which settings are being used on the Hot Rod Deluxe?
Thanks in advance!
is the guitar small or is it the shredding beast?
Forget the guitar! This guy is a killer guitarist!
mmmm nice guitar, I'm starting to think that a lespaul like this without binding actually looks best in gold! I must have one! With a lighter chambered body and maple fret board I recon the 50's fatter neck makes for a better balance in tone.
it's limited edition?
Greg, any records of yours we can buy? I'd love to hear more of your playing. Thanks!
no for the neck repair i needed to get on it haha
what a dude! PRO REVIEW!!.. the 50s tribute seems to distort at quite low levels. I BOUGHT ONE!!
Sounds great! Greg is an exceptional player! What amplifier and distortion pedal are you using? Thank you so much :)
agreed -- dab of lemon oil or orange oil on the fretboard,. caution: slippery when wet.
Would you recommed this guitar?
I don't think you can find better guitar for that money, i have it and its awesome!
wht is the cost fo this model man ???
I'm confused... where's the amp he's using?!?
Mines coming in tomorrow .. I can't fucking wait..
Damn Greg, When you coming 'round the Rochester/Buffalo area?
Hey Greg, have you tried the Koch amps?
Nice demo. I am curious, do you notice any difference in tone between the chambered and non chambered models? Also, do you think the chambered models are good for hard rock? Thanks.
The stuff you were playing, was it just improvised or is it an particular song?
needed a spare on budget, got this one. now, 4 weeks later, ordered a second one. there might be a 3rd ...
+Erwin Dimpfelmoser Mr. Koch, you're such a gifted musician, its always a delectation listening to you!
It´s really hard for me to concentrate on the guitar or even on Greg´s incredible playing for my eyes are mesmerized by that stack of Dumble Amps on the right. Are these real Dumbles or Clones?

sounds amazing
why are you always tuning it? surely it should stay in tune??
this guy is a fucking legend!
The guitar is fantastic but the sir is very good, Congrats!
All beginner players, please watch Greg's right hand. You don't have to beat the strings to death. A soft, smooth touch wins the day!
Nooooo attack attack attack
What amp&effect you use??
ordered one for 700€. hell of a good prize! expecting it to arrive next week :) cant wait for my first gibson :D
Greg is great and his demo is fantastic BUT why aren't we all talking about the fact there are FIVE Dumble amps behind him?!?
good sound!
im buying this
Looks like he loves the ZZ right?
Hi, how fat this neck is? Can you give me some help here?
I'd say Gold Fingers rather than Gold Top. Thank you Greg!!!
how many years of practice are needed to be able to tune a guitar within 10 seconds while talking into the camera?
you fun!
greetings from Brasil!
i love this guy!he's more than this awesome!and he just made me laugh to tears!
who the hell are the five people whodislike this guy?what a mistake!
Hey... you play great...
One positive point. :P
How big is this guy? The guitar looks like a Ukulele in his hands.
The sir?
I have this guitar, it's amazing for the price.
5:53 sound very good !!!
lol this guy could make a teisco with a checkmate amp sound good.
Very good guitar...
Damn you play awesome! :D
3:47 - 4:50 . Sickest shit I've ever heard on guitar. Can someone tab this even tho he's freestyling?
awesome Greg... my ears melt :))) \m/
Why do they continue to make custom shop guitars when these are so sweet? I guess for some players it's look at what I play not how I play. Rock on!
ye...you can get it from thoman
