The dealer told me I needed to replace the engine mounts. I'm skeptical because I have never been told to replace mine on any car I've owned. My current BMW is my first one, and I absolutely love it. I just don't know whether I should believe the dealer or not.
I became an owner of a BMW just today, and it was awesome. It's an '08 328i with the bells and whistles included. A lucky find at the local lot, for sure at less than 10K. The dealer showed the cost of the additional packages this has and it was worth that alone, almost. Thanks for the advice and for your page. I have been looking forward to owning one since I knew what a car was.
Luckily I’ve own my second BMW, 2014, 328i Sport, so far 368K Miles, only high pressure fuel pump, fuel pump modulator, just changed timing chain guide, with rod bearing since it crosses over in repair cost, also belts, just changed suspension as well, only thing out of those listed that was a must was high pressure fuel pump and modulator. This F30 has served me well seeing I had a Dinan Stage 1 tune since it’s first 3k miles onward till now. Amazing 🤩
In my family we’ve had our bmw 1995 3.2.5 TD since it came out, and the only time it broke down was because of the alternator that had to be replaced, apart from that we never had any major issues with the car. I believe the car is a limited edition ( I’m not completely sure though) since it’s a manual transmission and also a turbo charged Diesel engine. It has 230000 miles on the odometer, and still runs great!
Hey I have a 2013 528i. It has a n20 engine. I been driving the car pretty hard lately. And now I have a drivetrain malfunction message. Very delayed throttle response. But if I put it in manual, it runs perfectly. Automatic, it’s very delayed. I think it’s the diverter valve. Cold start idle vibrates the car a lot for 5-10 minutes. Before I break the bank figuring out the problem, what do you suggest?
Been watching alot of your videos, bought a 2012 528i and was very apprehensive now feeling alot better. Your videos are great for first time BMW owners. Thank you from Texas!!!
I’m thinking about buying the exact same car really soon, same year and all lol, but it almost has 140,000 miles on it, and idk how I feel about that, how’s it holding up for you now?? how many miles do you have?
I just forked out 1800.00 for a 3 hour recall repair. Picked up my car a week later( not 3 hours)and drove it 3.2 miles before calling dealership from my stalled car. It was doing that before, hence the visit to the dealership. I thought the scheduled repair would be the fix I needed, and the multi-point diagnostic scan showed nothing else other than a small oil leak as far as the engine goes. I did have them flush my coolant system out knowing that I needed a new hose and reservoir which I had already ordered and was in the trunk. I also elected the tire alignment which I would need soon anyway. I was trying to give them some paid services because the recall was a free service. This is week three that my car is not drivable now due to fuel pump. They already got me for a new radiator that I'm not sure I needed. I would think if a multi-point inspection was completed, a faulty fuel pump would show up. I was actually surprised it had not because fuel or air pump was my guess on the engine stall if it wasn't the recalled part. Now they want almost 1400.00 to replace fuel pump. Someone please tell me this is too high of a cost for an older bmw and that I can likely do this myself. I am a single mom starting over and need my car. My budget has no budge in it currently. 😢

I was so surprised with your answer to replacing spark plugs. My 3 series is at 115k and I was thinking abt replacing but I haven’t had a misfire since I got it at 73k.
That is much appreciated and thanks a lot for the kind words. Great car by the way. From a generation when the driving experience is personal and analog and less digitized. Cheers

Great advice, thanks! I’d also like to add that if you have a car with auto transmission, you should change the auto trans fluid as recommended. Sadly the newer BMWs do not have a physical dipstick for their auto trans, and you have to check it electronically with its computer.
i have a 2007 bmw 550i for 2 years now,i hear up and down they have problems but i dont see any major problem yet! what do you think about them? it is a 6 speed manual.
Bmw E90 M47 engine, 211000km so far, without any problem. My advices are: Don’t skip the service intervals. As a matter od fact I prefer to change oil a few thousand km before the book says, or if you don’t drive a lot you should change it one year maximum after your last change, use the quality oil, use the quality fuel, and do not drive it in high rpm before the engine warms up. Just to mantion that it is much better to drive the car on highway instead of driving in the city, this affects diesels expecially. Also you should wash and clean your car regulary, specifically you must wash it during winter time, when the salt is on the road, that’s how you should prevent any possible problem with rust or with paint.( Don’t forget to wash your car from below from time to time) Good luck, and most importantly, enjoy driving!
Good, down to earth, common sense video. I just picked up a 2017 BMW M2 for $18000 and the first question I asked was "What's wrong with it?" The car as a dealer serviced 1 owner documented history but it has done 138,000km's (85,000 miles) so my first question was obvious. I know what needs to be done but it's a bit daunting because I don't want to be constantly be chasing my tail with this thing.. it could get ridiculously expensive! The basics aren't that much though so prevention is obviously better than cure!
Your knowledge is invaluable...if you ever gave a class on preventive maintenance checks services...I’d definitely be one of the first to sign up. Thank you
Great tip regarding hot shutdowns on a turbocharged engine Many years ago (back in the 70’s) Mack had a plate on the dash for their Maxadyne Diesel that said “idle engine 3-5 minutes before shutdown to prevent turbocharger damage”
How about transmission fluid? Esp the DCT transmission, dealers says 60k miles but on my previous older cars, I change auto transmission fluid every 30k miles.
My 550i now has a replacement engine due to an injector going kookoo and blowing the cylinder… Your tips will help me maintain the new heart! Thank you
I just bought a 07 328iXI and the brakes are so bad they have really bad rust and I took the wheels off and try to clean them as much as I could with hot water and soap and a scrubber while I get money to change the whole brakes setup I plan on modifying it but like you said maintenance first before modifications.
Amazing video thank you Question about the turbo tip. I have a bmw 530e single turbo, and is a mild hybrid system and I keep it on auto which turns on the electric engine while driving and shutsdown the engine, would it be better to disable it while I'm driving for a longer distance meaning keep the engine running without turning it off by the system?
Amazing advice. I was taking car of all those issues on my 7 series. I just took my 2005 645ci out of storage and I notice the oil temp always go to 250°. Is it suppose to do that. I been doing my research and I’m thinking of getting a low temperature thermostat to make the car run cooler but it also stated that during the cold days the car won’t get hot enough. Should I get a water pump and replacement expansion pack?
I just bought a 2007 bmw 328xi coupe love it but check engine light is on due to MAFS is third party mafs work just as good as oem? Also when I turn off the car I get a coolant light for a few seconds what does that mean? Thanks man love your videos.
what's your take on gas AKI/OCTANE? I recently purchased a 2021 530i xdrive. The owner's manual recommends 91, but does it hurt if I use 93 (or does it really matter)? I'd love to know your thoughts.
What about the timing chain? Mine has 110K miles & the previous owner didn’t keen right track of the oil changes which worries me, my mechanic told me to hold on until it sounds or feels weird, it’s a 328I 2015, what should I do? Heard about a couple of blown engines due to the timing chain
@@Iamsoul00 i just sold it about a month ago, Up until about a good solid 10 months of ownership everying was great with regular maintenance but I messed up and water got into a couple modules which led to me having to replace and replace so I parted ways with it
The maintenance on them are really no different than any other bmw , if your proactive when you see a small sign, use premium gas and keep fresh oil then you wont be breaking the bank
As soon as you buy a bmw vehicle 1. Change/flush & fill every single fluid Oil, coolant, transmission, differential, brake , power steering 2.change all hoses 3.change all belts 4.breaks and rotors 5.spark plugs & coils
I'm glad you mentioned the car warming up and especially allowing a few minutes on turbo cars for them to cool some before turning the car off. I always let my n54 idle for a few minutes before shutting her off.
Thanks good stuff. Do new S63 engines in 2021 X5M need the cooling systems For the turbos as you mentioned? 5min wait? I noticed my car makes loud noise for 2min after shutting down , sounds like fans running on max speed
I got a used bmw and the first thing I’m doing is looking up maintenance on it I’m not and idiot and gonna but a tune or some power upgrades first ima get her maintenance up perfect
Question about letting it cool down. I have 2016 x6m and when i turn it off, it still runs for about 5mins or so. I think i was told this is the cool down process.
I do run the hell out of my cars but try to stay on top of the maintenance and wear on my bimmer. I love my 328i but will probably get a beater to commute to work to keep it tip top for my daughter who will be driving in a few years.
Hey, what about brake fluid? My dealer says flush the brake fluid and put new fluid in every two years b/c it brakes down and causes corrosion. Water separates then condenses.
I had 13 cars in the last 17 years. Yes I have a problem. The 520 F10 is by far the best car I ever had. Also use to work in a car dealership and I can tell you its very hard to beat the BMW overall value. Hope this helps.
Just picked up a CPO 2015 435i and it's my first turbo car. Turbos always seemed fun to me but I held off for a long time cause they also scared me with maintenance. I'll be viewing your videos much more now.
Philip Neas I was set on a 435i but then I found out how much will it cost to replace the turbo and I had to give up on it. About $4,000. From a local BMW shop and my local BMW dealer. Enjoy your car. I’m sure it’s a fun and awesome car to drive 👍
Philip Neas yes I’m sure. And I also asked them that if it goes out or it will go out at one point. And both the local shop and dealer said that it will. But of course if you take care of the car and the maintenance then it will last longer.
Brands will use the synthetic is better than Dino oil argument but I would cut BMWs recommendations in half especially now with hot running turbo cars. It’s amazing how dirty the oil is at their recommended values. I personally still still to the 3-5 thousand miles range
the german mech i know recommends 5k miles for ANY car with a turbo. He says oil is cheap, turbos are not. Also oil on sale is super cheap. I have seen full syn mobile one 6 qt for 20 bucks on black friday
I am a big fan of AMSOil. There’s a lot of marketing in the oil game but I’ve read some data admittedly from AMSOil that indicates the performance of various oils differs significantly.
What about the BMW e39 540i?are they are good reliable car, I have 3 of them but don't drive them often because I use my Peugeot 407 for daily use and only occasionally take the BMWs for a days drive, best car that I have driven, and I have owned many
@@ECPP Do you think that the BMW e39 540i will become a classic in the near future? Mine are all in good condition and about 145000km should I hold on to them for I have buyers interested.
One of the great things about living down south is the lack of salt and road grime my folks up north in snow climates have to deal with. That stuff is downright destructive to metal!
I am looking at buying a 2008 BMW 528xi. It has 143K miles on it. Would you buy this car if it was in good shape? What type of issues and money do I need to throw into it on a regular basis?
I am looking at buying a 2013 BMW X5 diesel with 130,000 KM for about 17K CAD. Would you buy a suv like this? What are the things that I should check and be aware of as a buyer? Many thanks.
I currently own a 2009 X5 Diesel and would. It another. With that said, the DEF tank heater is a “hidden recall or bulletin “. That the dealer does not advertise If it fails and your vehicle has low enough miles, it is usually covered under this factory extended warranty. Also, rear airbag springs will fail and is when but not if to a tube of about 500 bucks buying aftermarket and you doing it yourself. Egr cooler, sometimes glow plugs can go. With that said, they are sturdy, feel well made and delivers good performance and economy.
How bad is the v10 m5? Like is your engine going to break at some point or can preventative maintenance avert this?? Was thinking about buying one but not sure 🤷♂️
They are a bit fragile but the big thing is rod bearings and I would recommend just going ahead and have them changed before every 60,000 miles and be on top of your oil service. All other things can present issues but are manageable just as Vanos or SMG pumps. Best Euro sedan ever especially with a race exhaust on this machine. Always have some cash in bank for failures though.
ExoticCar PlayPlace thanks man been thinking about buying it as my fun car after I graduate. Think it’s worth it or will it run my pockets dry on an entry level graduate salary? Are you based in Canada or USA by chance? Just wondering if you’d be familiar with the Canadian pricing for them and their maintenance is all 🤔
Really sounds like luck to me because my Junky 335 was nothing but repair upon repair. I loved the car to drive and with stick it was fun. I liked the looks and sounds but reliability. Not.
Oh crap, i never intentionally let my turbos cool down before shutting off on any car I have owned. I do let my car idle for a bit after I drive but not that long and not every time.
The majority (if not all) of new BMW cars have auto start-stop engine, so after driving for 2 hrs straight, the turbo is super hot, if I stop to a traffic light the engine will automatically stop. That's how its designed, it supposed to be a feature not a bug. What do you think about it?
I have an old BMW 529i, 24 valves, 1996 model, where can I get a blueprint/drawings of the engine parts as I need to do some maintainance myself. It would be good if you can do a Engine Parts video.
I am an owner of F30 335i xdrive with MPPK for over a year and half now. I have clocked it 0-100 in 4.8, wish it was faster yes but it still smokes camaros and mustangs on a red light. Hope it lasts for another 4 years!
Get a Dinan tune and you won't believe the difference in power. Not too expensive considering the HP and torque gain. I have a Stage 2 tune on my Z 4 and it transformed the car.
Thanks for the information! I really wanted to get a used 435i series and was willing to pay for whatever the maintenance costs would be. But then when I found out how much it will cost to replace the turbo I decided not to. A local BMW shop gave me a price of about $4,000. My local BMW dealer gave me a price of $4,500. That’s with labor and parts. That is just crazy!!! For the 428i they quoted me about $2,300.
Not to be a dick but honestly if your are shopping for a bmw the n55 is way more reliable than the n20 if I’m buying a bmw it’s going to be a six cylinder it’s a must for me along with the m sport and lighting package
1) oil change

i have a 2007 bmw 550i for 2 years now,i hear up and down they have problems but i dont see any major problem yet! what do you think about them? it is a 6 speed manual.
It depends on how you take care of it. The unreliable ones surely have owners that do not care about of cars
Bmw E90 M47 engine, 211000km so far, without any problem. My advices are:
Don’t skip the service intervals. Also you should wash and clean your car regulary, specifically you must wash it during winter time, when the salt is on the road, that’s how you should prevent any possible problem with rust or with paint.( Don’t forget to wash your car from below from time to time)
Good luck, and most importantly, enjoy driving!
The basics aren't that much though so prevention is obviously better than cure!
living in Canada, how often do.you recommend rust check and car washes in the winter time?. thx
Hi, I wash the car a minimum once a week even when its clod out and that helps.
Mine stays garaged most of the winter. Bad weather? Thats belongs to my RAV4!😄
Your knowledge is invaluable...if you ever gave a class on preventive maintenance checks services...I’d definitely be one of the first to sign up. Thank you
Great tip regarding hot shutdowns on a turbocharged engine
Many years ago (back in the 70’s) Mack had a plate on the dash for their Maxadyne Diesel that said “idle engine 3-5 minutes before shutdown to prevent turbocharger damage”
Very nice. Yes most people these days don’t give it a second thought, but they should.
What are the best oil and coolant change intervals.
5k miles for oil and every 2-3 years for coolant
What services shops do you recommend for the car maintenance. I live in Southern California.
Beemer&Benz Santa Ana
I'm coming to you when I get my 750i. Where are you located?
Hey mark this is one of your best video, very informative information on the bmw machines
Thank you very much
How about transmission fluid? Esp the DCT transmission, dealers says 60k miles but on my previous older cars, I change auto transmission fluid every 30k miles.
I would always do it more often than not.
My 550i now has a replacement engine due to an injector going kookoo and blowing the cylinder…
Your tips will help me maintain the new heart! Thank you
I bought the Maintenance package on my 2020 X5 for until 2026. Covers brakes, flushes, belts, oil. I bought maintenance package on my Audi too.
Where you buy that at??
great advice mark well done as always
I just bought a 07 328iXI and the brakes are so bad they have really bad rust and I took the wheels off and try to clean them as much as I could with hot water and soap and a scrubber while I get money to change the whole brakes setup I plan on modifying it but like you said maintenance first before modifications.
Amazing video thank you
Question about the turbo tip.
I have a bmw 530e single turbo, and is a mild hybrid system and I keep it on auto which turns on the electric engine while driving and shutsdown the engine, would it be better to disable it while I'm driving for a longer distance meaning keep the engine running without turning it off by the system?
*2019 plugin hybrid 530e cylinder 2.0
Should I change coolant once a year or more often? 2019 430i Gran Coupe...
No between 50k-70k miles
May i ask the condition of your X5’s upholstery after all these years and cold weather in canada? Thanks.
Yes, absolutely. The leather is actually holding up very well and bolsters still in great shape only minor crinkling
My 2011 135 i (executive red leather) looks like new inside. Good leather.
Thanks for that vital information!!!
Thanks
@@ECPP You’re welcome.
Very informative... I need to get a few of these things done now and wasn't sure how important some of them were, thanks.
Great information, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Really great video for ppl interested in buying these type of cars !!
Mark, watching this video made me do a coolant flush and having my entire front end axle inspected.
Good plan
Thats a bit unusual. Sometimes a short temp coolant light can be a low level or pressure issue within the loop.
what's your take on gas AKI/OCTANE? I recently purchased a 2021 530i xdrive. The owner's manual recommends 91, but does it hurt if I use 93 (or does it really matter)? I'd love to know your thoughts.
Actually the higher octane is better. We only have 91 here in California.
I really love your channel Champ I’m a big BMW fan I own one myself your channel is real informative and helpful so thank you champ
Thanks a lot Robert for watching. That is much appreciated. It’s great to share info on these cars so we can make good decisions. Cheers
What about the timing chain? Mine has 110K miles & the previous owner didn’t keen right track of the oil changes which worries me, my mechanic told me to hold on until it sounds or feels weird, it’s a 328I 2015, what should I do? Heard about a couple of blown engines due to the timing chain
Great content my friend keep it the good work. Helped no end with my BMW.
Love from the UK
Many thanks. I do appreciate that. Have an awesome day.
@@ECPP I mean it you are my favourite content creator. Respect . Have an awesome life.
Bought me a 2006 650i , looking forward to proving the unreliability rumors wrong with the right upkeep !
How’s it going??
@@Iamsoul00 i just sold it about a month ago, Up until about a good solid 10 months of ownership everying was great with regular maintenance but I messed up and water got into a couple modules which led to me having to replace and replace so I parted ways with it
The maintenance on them are really no different than any other bmw , if your proactive when you see a small sign, use premium gas and keep fresh oil then you wont be breaking the bank
This is great advice
I’ve pretty much learnt to do this through DIY maintenance of my own vehicles
Just got a 6 cylinder Z4
thank you for the amazing advice, comes in clutch (no pun intended) as I just bought a 330xi with a B48
What’s the best oil for bmw ? I don’t have experience with this brand but I like it, thanks
Was just telling a buddy about that last one about the turbo cooling down. Great vid
Thanks for sharing. It is a common cause for early turbo failures, no cool down and dirty oil, cheers
Very good tips, some of them I already knew but the Turbo info I didn't it would have been very useful when I had a Turbo Beetle. THANKS.
Absolutely. Thanks for watching. Have a great one.
As soon as you buy a bmw vehicle
1. Change/flush & fill every single fluid
Oil, coolant, transmission, differential, brake , power steering
2.change all hoses
3.change all belts
4.breaks and rotors
5.spark plugs & coils
Yes, get everything up to snuff and do not skip maintenance
I'm glad you mentioned the car warming up and especially allowing a few minutes on turbo cars for them to cool some before turning the car off. I always let my n54 idle for a few minutes before shutting her off.
That is a very good policy especially considering the nasty job is to change a turbo in those cars
Thx for the tips
You bet
Question about letting it cool down. I have 2016 x6m and when i turn it off, it still runs for about 5mins or so. I think i was told this is the cool down process.
So e vehicles have turbo timers which automate this action
I do run the hell out of my cars but try to stay on top of the maintenance and wear on my bimmer. I love my 328i but will probably get a beater to commute to work to keep it tip top for my daughter who will be driving in a few years.
Thanks for the video, I literally just bought my first bmw today. I got a 06 750 li
Thanks for dropping a line. Have a great day
how about a 535d ? is it the same for a diesel ?
Quite different actually
@@ECPP Please do comment on maintenance intervals. It would be quite interesting bmw Diesel episode !
oil change 6 000 km
transmission flush 30 000 km
brake flush
premium unleaded fuel
filters 70 000 km
sparks
Oi change every 6k km? What kind of shit oil do you have there, ever heard of LongLife?
Hey, what about brake fluid? My dealer says flush the brake fluid and put new fluid in every two years b/c it brakes down and causes corrosion. Water separates then condenses.
I had 13 cars in the last 17 years. Yes I have a problem. The 520 F10 is by far the best car I ever had. Also use to work in a car dealership and I can tell you its very hard to beat the BMW overall value. Hope this helps.
Helpful summary. Your video cuts through all the detail in the BMW manuals.
You bet. Cheers
Just picked up a CPO 2015 435i and it's my first turbo car. Turbos always seemed fun to me but I held off for a long time cause they also scared me with maintenance. I'll be viewing your videos much more now.
Thanks for watching
Philip Neas I was set on a 435i but then I found out how much will it cost to replace the turbo and I had to give up on it.
About $4,000. From a local BMW shop and my local BMW dealer.
Enjoy your car. I’m sure it’s a fun and awesome car to drive 👍
@@hugomeza2910 the turbo is very reliable in this car believe it on not
Philip Neas yes I’m sure. And I also asked them that if it goes out or it will go out at one point. And both the local shop and dealer said that it will. But of course if you take care of the car and the maintenance then it will last longer.
@@hugomeza2910 oil.changes and keeping the turbo cool after hard driving is key
Great content Mark! How often should engine oil be replaced on a M340i ? I believe BMW just recommends top off until 7000 miles. This seems insane!
What about the BMW e39 540i?are they are good reliable car, I have 3 of them but don't drive them often because I use my Peugeot 407 for daily use and only occasionally take the BMWs for a days drive, best car that I have driven, and I have owned many
E39s are sturdy cars and not absolute money pits. The M5 is a bit more of a maintenance hog but overall the series is pretty good. My fave is 540
@@ECPP Do you think that the BMW e39 540i will become a classic in the near future? Mine are all in good condition and about 145000km should I hold on to them for I have buyers interested.
One of the great things about living down south is the lack of salt and road grime my folks up north in snow climates have to deal with. That stuff is downright destructive to metal!
For sure, I often winder what my ancestors were thinking when they landed here.
So is the humidity.
Good deal i just bought my baby !!!! 2017 330i certified bmw
I am looking at buying a 2008 BMW 528xi. It has 143K miles on it. Would you buy this car if it was in good shape? What type of issues and money do I need to throw into it on a regular basis?
good advise on cooling down the turbo.
It helps a lot
Get the 35i instead
Just wondering if you’d be familiar with the Canadian pricing for them and their maintenance is all 🤔
I have a 08 335i it had 157k miles I just changed the rod bearing. Need to walnut blast my valves tho... previous owners never did it.
Really sounds like luck to me because my Junky 335 was nothing but repair upon repair. I loved the car to drive and with stick it was fun. I liked the looks and sounds but reliability. Not.
N54 engine lasted that many kms ain’t bo wat
Oh crap, i never intentionally let my turbos cool down before shutting off on any car I have owned. I do let my car idle for a bit after I drive but not that long and not every time.
Do this VERY valuable info to for the 7series as well? If not can you please do a review like this on the 7series?
Hi Mark. My 2012 X5 35d has 75k miles. I own it for two years since 65 k.Should I think about changing coolant?
What do you need to do to maintain the cooling? Just top off fluids or?
Taking away the Turbo cooldown procedure! Thanks ! Great vid
Thanks for watching
I think you will find d similar pricing in most manufacturers these days since most euro and Japanese cars these days use turbos
Not to be a dick but honestly if your are shopping for a bmw the n55 is way more reliable than the n20 if I’m buying a bmw it’s going to be a six cylinder it’s a must for me along with the m sport and lighting package
Turbos are not necessarily going to break if you take care of the car. The 4 series is nice car quite comfortable and quick but not luxurious.
Is a 2006 323i sedan rwd good as a first car? 145k km mileage only $4.5k, will it be expensive to maintain? Thank you
