  • The Netherlands is known as the country of bicycles. It is not only a convenient means of transportation, but it is also a fun way to discover your surroundings as well. In other countries, the bicycle is also becoming more and more popular! The Dutch Cycling Embassy acts as an intermediary between the global demand and the domestic supply of knowledge, expertise and products needed to build more bicycle-friendly cities and regions. To learn how this works we hear from Lucas Harms and others.

Keep going guys, you can help many places around the world. The Dutch people should be proud of what they have achieved. I wish London was like anywhere in the Netherlands.

Cycling is not just for urban environments. With electric bicycles, getting from one village to the next is much easier now. I live in a place devoid of public transport. If I want to use it, I have to travel at least 15km in any direction, except for a single bus line coming through here once per hour. I'm actually faster on my bicycle than using public transport, and the electric engine has made me independent of the wind and other weather effects. However, few people cycle these distances, and when I ask around why they drive, they usually say they don't feel safe on the bicycle. Cycling safety outside of built-up areas is an important issue as well. We have to move away from cars as much as possible, after all.
