- Merry Christmas! Today, we're finishing out Pentatonix Christmas celebration with the one and only!... well.. Pentatonix of course. In this final video, we will be listening to Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy as covered by PTX. I originally planned to release this video much sooner than it's being released but well.. you know. Copyright and things. But it's kind of poetic that it's coming out right on Christmas Eve so.. cool! Anyway. This will be the final video of the year so I hope that you've enjoyed watching this series as much as I've enjoyed making it! See you next year!
Oh, also. If you'd like to support the channel, there's a link down below in case you'd like to buy me a coffee. Or a coke. Or maybe a candy bar I don't know. Whatever floats your boat. Thanks in advance though!
For those of you that don't know, this video will be covering not just a reaction to what I'm watching but I'll be talking about the things that I really enjoy about what the featured artist is doing. This can range from how they have composed their music from player to player if it's a band, or the drummer himself; and what I think they're doing really well technically as well as musically! I'll also do my best to convey and educate on the things that pop out to me so that we can all appreciate the artist and what they are doing! Of course, there's only so much that can be covered in a short RUclips video so there are bound to be things that I've missed so bear with me! And now, time for the mandatory disclaimer!
NOTE:
This is going to be a reaction and analysis of the song meaning that I will be pausing the song a lot to give my thoughts, reactions and analysis so if you are here to just listen to the song with no meaningful feedback, this is not the video for you. Stay happy and healthy!
Thank you so much for stopping by and watching this video, I hope that you enjoy it!
*Like to support the channel?*
If you know about the reaction channel game, then you know that these channels don't make any money on RUclips. If you enjoyed the video and would like to help support it, you could always visit the link right below if you'd like to buy me a coffee to help power through those long editing nights! Thanks in advance!

In another reaction to this classic, someone said "an instrumental can't be performed by an acapella group - Pentatonix, hold my beer".
To be fair, the Grammys used to say an instrumental can’t be performed by an a cappella group, then they changed a category so PTX could win. Two years in a row.
I watched another reactor saying that Pentatonix shouldn’t be able to do do this, it isn’t even a song- just instrumental. But PTX makes their own rules. A song with no words, performed by a band with no instruments. Phenomenal.
👋😄Yes it's sped up This arrangement won PENTATONIX their 2nd Grammy!!........MORE PENTATONIX!!
It's because PTX has the very best modern Christmas music!
You just got "Mitch slapped"!
PTX IS #1.
Their editors you have to give a thumbs up.
🌲🎵🎼
UGH, Avi's vibrato in the beginning 😍
Pain in the Butt = Their Second Grammy.
You are a godsend, putting new and knowledgeable perspective on each PTX performance that I find fascinating. Great job on the Grammy winning performance.
Grammy winning arrangement
I love how PTX "upgrade" their covers. I appreciate your break down, because you are a music teacher. Merry Christmas!
Grammy number 2 for this arrangement...
Their articulation is phenomenal....
Whooooa. A little random, but.... I've never seen your videos before and at your first word my ears melted a little. You're voice sounds so nice! ❤
Aww thank you so much! That’s very kind of you! 🥰
Agreed, I think Josh would have great voice for audio books.
Second Grammy award. Just wanted to point that out……Judy D
Acapella is connected to Christmas (music for the chapel) which is why you see the different bands doing it alot. Homefree for example or Streetcorner Symphony.
This wasn't as bad to edit as the Daftpunk medley was.
Avi Kaplan (the classically trained bass lead in this) was quite pleased because his part was filmed in 10 minutes since they were all filmed separately (no goofing around together and messing up see Gangnam Style Bloopers for the best recorded example).
The grammy award was received for arrangement instrumental or acapella.
Avi reportedly brought this to the band and of course he is part of the rythmn section. The beatboxing was not only Kevin. Avi contributed from the beginning. When Kevin needed to breath Avi would take over for a bit and wind sounds, overtone singing etc were always Avi. Avi had been doing this as a member of several other award winning acapella bands for a few years.(Fermata Nowhere, Singcopation etc) Mitch also started covering for Kevin later on.
You might want to check out Avi Kaplan's solo music. He uses instruments. He tried to keep the drum portion simple in Change On the Rise but now he has a permanent drummer, Noah Denney in his backing band. Being Avi the band members' ability to harmonize is as important as their instrumental skills.
Gail, you pretty much said everything I was going to say. I've heard that Avi worked with Ben Bram on this arrangement, more so than the other members, using his training in Classical music and theory. Certainly his bass part in this piece is a standout, including that last powerful note he hits, hand gestures and all.
Gail, I've had that workshop "Run To You" in one of my YT playlists for about 2 years now. I love watching him conduct, especially the point where the lyric is "How can I win back" and he raises up on his toes and reaches out to draw the emotion from the singers.
I know you are basically done with Christmas music, but you should really listen to their version of Mr Grinch. While the lead is great, the backgrounds are amazing. I think you would appreciate it.
Maybe as a New Year's bonus.
Merry Christmas!
YES PLEASE!!!
A pain...? Oh yeah, they were filmed separately.... I don't remember which song, but at one point in a song, Mitch is traveling one direction on the their scale and Kirstie in the opposite...; When they cross notes, for just one beat, the ear can only perceive four voices, but that "Voice" is in stereo.
Another great reaction. Please take a look at God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and 90's Dance Medly.
I enjoyed your reaction to this amazing Pentatonix video. Thank you. I look forward to more of your Pentatonix reactions in 2022. I hope that you will have a Happy New Year.
They are incredible and your reaction is so enjoyable.
It couldn’t be more perfect!
This performance won them one of their Grammys. Again I recommend you react to Junna performing "Through The Fire And Flames", Yoyoka "Cannon Rock", The Wagakki band "DrumxWadaiko Battle" and for a drum solo unlike any you have ever seen or heard "Home Free Drum Solo" by Adam Rupp.
Merry Christmas!
You should definitely react to Voiceplay since you have reacted to PTX and Home Free. As a drummer, you will definitely appreciate the percussion of Layne Stein, especially in their new Wicked Medley.
Wicked as in the musical? I had the pleasure of marching a show based on Wicked in college and I loved the music! This sounds awesome!
@@JoshCastillo Yes, it is honestly unbelievable.
You should check out Daft Punk, New Rules x Are You That Somebody as non Xmas music. The Prayer and Mary Did You Know? For Xmas.
One of my favourites!!! 😁
Hey Guy You GOTTA do The Prayer by Pentatonix
Well Josh I hit your like and your sub buttons so what does that tell ya! HaHa! Really really enjoyed your reaction! Have a great Christmas and a Very Happy New Year!!
Thank you! You as well!
You really do need to their Mr Grinch
oh man.......the pauses tho. LOL
Something quite odd hearing an A Capella group 'singing' an instrumental. Kinda like one of their other videos where there is a piano on stage with them sitting off to the side not being used. Enjoying catching up with some of your PTX reactions. Not sure why I haven't found your site before. I watch a lot of reactors, mostly of PTX, but I enjoy hearing the reactions by musicians. You're the second drummer. Both have unique views. Probably because I married a music major.
New Year's Day live in NYC
Late to the party ... you might want to check out some of the many fan videos that came out last month from their Evergreen holiday tour. They always have simple but effective choreography onstage - simple because they are singers, not dancers, and they need their breath for the songs. Check out, for instance, We Need a Little Christmas, in Minneapolis - ruclips.net/video/VOzBW8hNRIQ/видео.html (with an introduction from Scott that will tell you some of their history).
Please watch their Carol Of the Bells if you haven’t already!
Have you seen Top Secret? They are an excellent Swiss marching drums group which I think you will like.
I have seen Top Secret! They're very fun to watch and I'm always impressed by their precision
I have to wonder if I’ve seen your marching band at some point in time.
👋 👍 🤩✔️
I've been flipping through your videos and have a serious question. How do you get 1080p filming on a potato?
Im not sure I know what you mean.
@@JoshCastillo Just watch any of your videos, they are intensely grainy.
Oh yes, I’m aware. It’s mostly bad lighting where I film. I’m testing a new spot this year that will hopefully work out better.
Hope you figured out how to turn off power saving mode\\sleep mode so it doesn't shutdown on you when afk to long. Being slaved to the device seems as step backward, but I ain't one to gossip... .
Love the reactions but will you pls check out SNARKY PUPPY- LINGUS PLS
It’s most definitely on my list I promise! I’m actually really excited for that one

Editing this video was definitely a nasty job. The keyframes alone must have been the worst ones. It's not rocket science, but it's very labor intensive.
I enjoyed your video but there is a lot of background noise in your sound comminig in and out and that is distracting. I would recommend using a low cut at 50 of even 100 Hz and a cardiod polar pattern mic.
Thanks for the advice, I do accept donations!
You need to do a Home Free I think there better the Pentatonix
I love PTX but you talk too much during your reactions.
I'm sorry that you feel that way. I made it a point when I started doing this to not insult my viewers intelligence with mindless reactions. Instead, I choose to offer what I consider valuable information in ways that I hope everyone can understand to show why I think these artists are so great. That being said, I hope you find the type of reactor that you're looking for. Have a great day!
