  • General Motors is making a new round of upgrades to its Fort Wayne Assembly plant to further increase production of the all-new Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickups - especially crew cab models.
“We are building Chevrolet and GMC crew cab pickups at record volume and mix levels to meet customer demand and the $24 million investment will allow us to build even more,” said Mary Barra, GM chairman and CEO. “The team here at Fort Wayne has done an outstanding job helping us satisfy customers throughout this launch. Our product ramp-up was very smooth and the quality has been exceptional. Crew cab sales have been very strong, and we are expanding customer choice with new models, more cab choices and innovative new powertrains.”
Combined sales of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 crew cab pickups, which launched in the second half of 2018, were up 20 percent in the first quarter of 2019 versus a year ago. GM is projecting another significant increase for the second quarter. Customer deliveries of the double-cab models built in Fort Wayne began during the first quarter.
The $24 million will be invested to further enhance the plant’s conveyors and other tooling to support the increased production. The work will be completed this summer. With today’s announcement, GM has invested more than $1.2 billion in the plant since 2015.
Since 2009, GM has invested $23 billion in U.S. manufacturing - more than one-quarter of every dollar spent by automakers.

I have a 2013 Silverado extended cab with a Dura Max made at Ft. Wayne. Other than a recall for the heater assembly in the DEF tank which GM fixed under warranty, I have had zero issues with my pick up. I realize it is hardly broken in at 120,000 miles but its been great so far. I"m sure it will be humming along at 250K. Always wanted to thank the folks who made my truck. If one of the folks who work at Ft. Wayne reads this, Thanks. Go GM. Go UAW. Go America.

Man oh man. I installed some of the first Ethernet Back Bone cable, in this plant while it was under construction. I worked for Digital Equipment Corporation, as an installer. My Sliverado comes from the same plant. If you have never been in an assembly plant, and see how it works you have missed a sight to be sure. I pass this plant, south west of Fort Wayne, on my way to INDY, every Labor Day weekend, on the way to the U.S. Nationals. I think about that every time. WOW!

The assembly process isn’t where the problems are usually born. Screwing parts on over and over is not rocket science. The recalls are born in the design as well as subpar components.
American workers can assemble as good of a product as any other country can which is why Toyota, Honda have succeeded in assembling vehicles here.

I will never own another new GM product. I bought my first new chevy 4x4 truck in 1978 my 2nd in 1987 my 3rd in 2000 when it got wrecked my bought my 4th in 2004. drove it home 8.9 total on the truck and it never left my driveway again under its own power. after fighting with Gm dealer 6 days later when they did come to look at it the idiot locked the keys in it 3 times messed up my paint job and the 3rd time just busted the wide window out of it. I told the you just bought this truck back. after I got a lawyer involved I got my money back and been with ford ever since. but when you give 20k CASH for a truck and drive it 8.9 miles and they don't want to fix it. I think it was because I paid cash. and I called them with in 20 minutes of leaving the dealer. but I liked the video its cool how it all works.
