Some context about Megan's past and why the lyrics are so somber:
Megan had a very tough time during her rise to fame. First, she lost her mother and grandmother during the same year she blew up.
Then, she was shot five times in the foot by a guy she was seeing at the time, and he proceeded to troll her for 2 years and deny that he did it (even recorded an album about it that gained him popularity). The media also joked about her trauma surrounding it and blamed her for it. Even famous rappers like Drake, and an industry friend of hers, Debaby joined in on mocking her publicly about it. A court case was filed against the man who shot her by not Megan herself, but the state of California where it happened, and he was found guilty and finally sentenced this year.
Her label treated her awfully during this time as well. They attempted to stop multiple high profile projects of hers, and she went to court with them several times to break her contract, which finally happened this year too. So although she is managed by Jay-Z's label, Roc Nation, she is technically an independent artist right now.
So, these are her first releases as an independent artist. She reveals in this song that she lost friends, battled with depression and alcoholism, and her last boyfriend cheated on her...
Megan has had to fight through a lot these past few years, and finally has the freedom to express herself and her art in a way that she never could before. I am very excited to see how she evolves as an artist going forward! I don't think a collab like this would've happened if she was still under her previous label, so I believe this is going to be a stepping stone to more like it in the future!
Props if you read all this 😅 I'm spreading this around because I feel like this context makes this collab make more sense, in retrospect.

Probably because she was stuck in her contract. She's independent now.
It bops, rap sections give off heavy Body Count vibes, and Courtney's sections feel very spiritbox, so all in all its a solid blend of the genres. Metal is king again. Happy day.
I like rap and metal and to see this fusion with one of the top rap artists (not just female) doing a remix with Spiritbox and do it so well is a huge dub. Megan has that flow that’s so good and to match it with Courtney’s voice was pretty sick ngl.

As a metalhead, I want a whole album of Megan Thee Stallion and Spiritbox.
This brings me back to the days when Jay-Z dropped that album with Linkin Park. I was in high school when they released that and it made my little nu-metal heart just about explode. It’s SO awesome to see elements of nu-metal and metalcore start to creep back into the mainstream.
With the atmosphere and mixing of styles, this gives me Queen of the Damned soundtrack vibes. Movie wasn't good, but the music that came out of it was amazing. Love this, and love it for Spiritbox.
Queen of the Damned was completely scored by Jonathan Davis. Due to contracts and obligations he wasn't allowed to sing anything, but he matched the vocalists perfectly for each song.

That soundtrack helped to develop my interest in rock music. I was 10 when it came out and it was really the first time I was exposed to that kind of music.
Was the movie great? Absolutely not, but I still enjoy watching it 1-2 times a year.

I'll just listen to Poppy instead, since she's the opener. And I'll also listen to Spiritbox and Lorna Shore and Loathe and more Sleep Token and alt. and LANDMVRKS and Invent Animate and Termina and Awaken I Am and Ice Nine Kills and STARSET....

Ther was nothing wrong with the chug soll at the end of the original version. It fit the tone. Rap will always blend well with metal. They come from the same root musically.

Honestly the 1st thought I had when I heard their vocal styles blending was the female version of Mike and Chester. Courtney obviously doing Chester-like scream and cleans and MTS doing the Mike style rap flow and it worked a lot better than I figured it would.

I was fan of a few of her tracks - specifically, the SNL version of "Savage" - and this is my fav so far, obviously; got's boxes and spirits. Also, Megan likes anime and quite a few intros/outros of the most popular anime are proper death metal so makes sense.

I actually DESPISE rap music today, talentless, promotes naked women and calls it “powerful” nah that just being a hoe, the same beats and production. This is the most originality I’ve heard in rap since 2014. But it’s getting better because now these same artist are being called out for their bs and actually putting out better music for once. But I’ll stick to my sub genres of rock and metal thank you.

If you listen to the original your mind will be blown to hear the incredible additions added to the song, the Cobra chorus is new, the metal touches add extra drama and emotion, you gotta hear both to get how good the remix is.

This kind of reminds me of that one side project of Mike Shinoda's. I think it was called the X-ecutioners or something like that and I think it had the drummer and one of the guitarists of Linkin Park and Wayne Static of Static X on guitar as well. I think they did a song called It's Going Down if I am not mistaken and it was a perfect crossover between rap and metal. I cannot remember the rap group featured on the song but it was super cool.
