The 2022 draft may not be one of the best however it was for Habs given Slaf / Hutson are on the team and Beck, Engstrom & Davidson (?) will be soon.
Grant, can you advise if there is a lot of physicality in the KHL as most of the Demidov highlights show little, thanks.

I just looked at Slaf's projected numbers: he's still on pace for 46 points in 79 games, it's not far at all from his 50 in 82 last season. Plus, he did not start the season on the first line, played about half his games out of his usual spot. So yes he's scoring goals a bit less often but his playmaking is more than okay and his passing has actually slightly improved.

In his slow-ish first half, Slaf is still almost on track to match his point totals of last year (he's on pace for 46 points in 79 games, which is a 48-point pace). His goals have been exactly on the same pace as his slow first half of last year, but he's putting up assists at the same pace he did in his good second half. So his "slow" start this year is still significantly better than his slow start last year. If his game picks up in the second half of this year anywhere near what he did last year, well...even if his pace on assists stays the same and only his goals pick up, he can still easily hit 55 points. If both his goals and assists pick up a bit as we expect them to, the 60-point season everyone was predicting for him is still very much within reach.

Slaf looks a lot older than he is. His build, voice, facial features, feels like he's 24-25. Even I'm guilty of forgetting at times that he's so young.
The only thing I'm slightly concerned of is if he's playing through an injury without saying it out of fear of losing his spot on the top line if he misses time. He did last time. Being that he's competitive I wouldn't put past him. You see it all the time.

  • @SamuelAtalla

Anyone watch the 30 minute Rotenberg meeting with Hughes, Lecavalier and Bobrov? It's on SKA's youtube channel. Rotenberg talks about letting players go from the KHL once they're ready for the NHL. Panarin, Kaprizov, etc (although it's not so much the KHL letting them go vs. them leaving for the NHL on their own axcord)
With Demidov at 18 he's already ready. To me it's obvious why they limit his minutes. It's not only the "KHL veteran hierarchy mentality" or punishing players that are leaving. If you play him properly he'll produce, appear NHL ready and leave right away. They want to try and squeeze another season or two out of those star prospects to help them win a championship short term. They know he'll eventually leave. By limiting his minutes you possibly hinder his production, confidence, instill doubt in the player and his NHL team. Is he ready? You get the picture. If's manipulation. SKA's been trying to hide the obvious. We know he's ready so they aren't fooling anyone.
    Demidov 2025 let's gooo

I think that this weekend showed that Pezzetta doesn't have a place on this team anymore. There is no forward on this team that he could replace without it being a real downgrade. Armia or Gallagher moved up to the second line, which left Evans with Pezzetta and Hinneman. In order to give Evans ( Your best forward the month of Dec. ) more icetime, MSL put Evans on the first line. Slav was not benched. He was replaced .

I know his progression is sort of normal stat wise… although.. when watching him he struggles to play his role.
He doesn’t hit everything he sees… rarely plays with energy… puck battles he looks weak… weak stick..
Rushes all his passes on the power play and thru the neutral zone.
I agree he needs to put on UPPER BODY muscle… not just weight but upper body muscle.
1st overall label really irks me as well as other fans because we expect points, talent… individual plays.. dynamic like plays..
One thing he has not lost is his ability to make amazing passes.
But my one question.. does he posses the ability to score goals in the nhl… he does not shoot much.. not often in shooting areas.

Good video guys. Totally agree what your saying about Slaf, especially about losing 10lbs. His confidence is low and eventually he will get that back. Look at Dach and how fast his game changed once he got his confidence back. Its incredible how confidence can impact having some jump in the legs along with reading and reacting to the game. Dach looked slow and lethargic, now he is zipping around tracking pucks again. Slaf will get that back. I do wish he would engage more though and consistently move his legs, play with the fire he showed last year. He seems to be standing or gliding with the puck a lot when he does have it. Once in awhile he should take it to the net himself. But this will all come back with confidence.

The people that mostly complain about Slaf, they don't see what he does when he is away from the puck, will complain about the 2 times he loses a board battle and say nothing about the 2-3 times he wins them. Slaf is fine, he is progressing well. Caufield was told to work on specific things over scoring last year. What makes people think this year is any different for Slaf? Le problème avec Slaf c'est son attitude, son faible niveau d'effort, his low sense of urgency, ... he has no grit, no wish to play physical, and the list goes on. Plese, "experts" stop talking about his age, h'es a big guy,.. bla bla bla. Please stop. Son lancer est imprecis, très prévisible, tjrs du meme angle de palette, son release est very slow.. feez these young guys should be on the ice non stop working on details and individual skills like kucherov et crosby do. Its clear that he thought he was already a star. Had a crap summer clearly. Made numerous ads in canada and in slovaky. At the start of rhe season he laught at waht he did the previous summer wirh the lenses,.. meaning he does not this anymore. And he is not a power foreward neither. Depuis 3 ans que je le suis et je voulais que le CH le repeche 1er. Tres content quand c'est arrivé. I was seeing an assertive, creative, hungry and mean young guy. Where is that guy?!? Thats why we are so pissed off!!

Slaf stood out in the juniors
I think he was a good choice by Montreal I don't think he will disappoint. Need to be patient
MSL knows how to handle him
    Just my opinion

Cooley won't be the best player of the 2022 draft... and not Slaf either! It's going to be Hutson!

Team Canada need to get the Hunter Bros &/or the Sutter Bros (or the like) involved in building a team to compete on the international stage. Nothing against the folks that didn't win the Gold this year, but their philosophy doesn't work, they tried but failed.
We used to fill the team with the best talent and get the proper coach to put those talents in spots that will win, simple.
Canada is still the best hockey country and it will be that way for a while still. Let get gold in Minnie next year!

Here is the thing… I want Slaf to be successful as a Lifelong Hab fan but he was never productive in his amateur career… he needed to go to Junior for a year… AHL FOR A YEAR then pro, Habs have done terrible job developing him

if he didn't do well in the AHL, he would have an even bigger problem

@ ohhh I agree. The leadership of the Habs played politics. One only has to look at Slafs amateur career to see he was woefully unprepared… he was not ready
He should have followed the same path as Shane Wright
      OHL
      AHL
      Lead Slovakia in World Junior’s
He was spoon fed put on the first line without earning it
      Suzuki and Caufield carried him
      Heinneman deserves those precious minutes
And they gave him a huge contract
      They have bungled this
But as a Hab fan I hope he finds something I do not think he has
